Love in Minneapolis
AL-02 candidate Jay Love may not get his opportunity to speak to the GOP convention in Minneapolis with its revised schedule due to Hurricane Gustav. He will not speak in his originally scheduled time slot today.
His campaign tells the Parlor:
We’ve been told that all convention events that aren’t legally necessary have been put on hold for now. Hopefully, we’ll know more soon. Jay has participated in some run through sessions just to be prepared should the convention activities resume.
Obviously it is a tremendous opportunity to address the Republican National Convention, but Jay’s first concern is for those being threatened by this storm. He agrees with John McCain that the seriousness of the situation calls for putting a hold on politics for now so we can focus on disaster response and relief. Whether the speech happens or not, this convention is about putting country first and that’s exactly what Jay Love will do.
I imagine that it would be a big disappointment to miss the opportunity, but that his campaign would still get the boost (big or small, I don’t know) from being selected to speak. Though if footage was available of him speaking before the convention, his campaign might make good use of it.
The GOP is not pulling punches for this seat. Not only was there this scheduled speaking opportunity at the convention, but state GOP heavyweights including Gov. Riley, party Chairman Mike Hubbard, and retiring AL-02 incumbent Terry Everett were part of a fish fry honoring Love in Dothan Thursday night. And in a story first broken here in the Political Parlor, President Bush is expected at a Huntsville fundraiser for Love and AL-05 candidate Wayne Parker.
