Sen. Marc Keahey, Sen. Cam Ward, Rep. Joe Hubbard, and Rep. John Merrill will be blogging here during the 2011 Legislative Session.

A Time to Pause

This post usually recaps all the work we did the past week in the Legislature. While the Senate did pull an all night session from sunset to sunrise on Tuesday evening, everything was overshadowed by the terrible storms that ravaged our state. The Senate was scheduled to debate the Education Budget on Thursday but this was postponed until next week so that members could get back to their districts and help with those who have been hardest hit by this tragedy.

Many members of the Senate had friends and family members hit hard by this disaster. I am keeping all of them in my thoughts and prayers as well as so many other people in this state who are hurting right now.

Next week we will all have plenty of time to debate the issues that we face in Montgomery but for now let’s all put aside our differences and help those in our state who are hurting. For the latest information from the Emergency Management of Alabama you can visit their online headquarters where they have all the information you can ask for on the current recovery efforts. Also, if you are interested in helping others in hard hit areas you can go to the Governor’s Faith Based Initiative site for other ways you may be able to serve in the recovery effort.

I went to Tuscaloosa yesterday to meet up with a crew to bring in supplies. I’ve never seen anything like it. I hope I never do again.

But we’re Alabamians. We’ll work together to overcome it.

Not to slight the many areas other than Tuscaloosa where people died, were injured, and property was damaged or totally destroyed, readers may be interested in viewing a flyover of the destruction in Tuscaloosa on a video made by Bill Castle of ABC 33/40 in Birmingham following the path of the tornado. I heard he has filmed other Alabama paths of destruction that you may be able to find on Youtube (search Bill Castle). The Tuscaloosa video is @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6giQ3csbUg&sns=fb

While Tuscaloosa sustained massive damage other part of Alabama were also destroyed and suffered lost of life …please do not forget Jackson and DeKalb county’s …like were are always forgotten…regarding everything. A life is a life and many were lost in the northeast corner of our state that has become accustomed to being ignored.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
