Sen. Marc Keahey, Sen. Cam Ward, Rep. Joe Hubbard, and Rep. John Merrill will be blogging here during the 2011 Legislative Session.

Calendar for the Session

There was a little confusion this past week over the meeting calendar for the rest of the legislative session. Depending on who you asked and what day you asked there were wildly varying meeting schedules proposed. By law we cannot meet any later than June 13th so there was no question we were not going beyond that date. The real question was whether or not we would meet in the month of May or not.
Some people at the State Souse will argue that the idea of not meeting in May was just purely a fanciful rumor. I can tell you it was indeed a very real proposal. The only reason this rumor ever got started in the first place was because of the confusion in coordinating so many different calendars at once. As it turns out, we will not meet for roughly two weeks during the month of May. The Joint Legislative Reapportionment Committee will hold public hearings throughout the state during those two weeks allowing for the legislature to vote on final congressional district lines before we adjourn in June. This will save money by not having a special session dedicated solely to reapportionment as has happened in the past.
Tentatively we are scheduled to meet for three legislative days a week over the next two weeks. Then we will be out of Montgomery for the second two weeks of May, before returning for two more three day legislative work weeks at the end of May and first week of June. The goal would be for Sine Die adjournment to take place on Thursday June the 9th.
Of course like everything else in the Alabama Legislature this is subject to change as I discovered on more than one occasion this past week.

@Cam Are there any proposed maps online anywhere we can view since the Comm has been going around having meetings?

Sounds like a reasonable plan. Too bad you will get criticized by the great unwashed anyway.

  • I think maps will start to being created after hearing from the general public on their thoughts. Those hearings will not take place until May.

Sen Cam,I would like to know when our bill,SB282,the FaithBased Freedom Bill will get a vote.Thousands of Christians have worked hard on this bill.We would appreciate a simple vote(and your support). Thanks

  • Rick, you will need to ask the Rules Committee when they are putting it up for a vote in the Senate. They will make that decision.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
