TJ Maloney Hired as New State GOP Executive Director

Expect an announcement soon that Virginia native Timothy “TJ” Maloney is the new Executive Director of the state Republican Party.

Maloney has been active in various campaigns, including serving as campaign manager for Allen Alley’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign in Oregon and state Sen. Brad Zaun’s 2010 race for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District against Democratic incumbent Leonard Boswell. Maloney also consulted for state Rep. Bob Onder’s 2008 9th District congressional campaign in Missouri and had been involved in Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign.

One Alabama Republican tells the Parlor that the NRCC brought Maloney in to work with Wayne Parker’s Congressional campaign (against Democrat Parker Griffith in CD-05) in 2008 saying that Maloney has been “basically a GOTV hired gun around the country” with strong southern ties.

Republicans that I have talked to about Maloney thought him to be a good hire. “A lot of folks in the state were vying for it. Different people, many in [state GOP Chair Bill] Armistead’s camp, were pushing different folks. It was a smart move getting someone out of state. He’s a good, neutral pick,” said one GOP insider.

Another GOP’er agreed that Maloney is “not a polarizing personality,” saying that his hire represents “a great balance of relationships” among state Republicans.

Maloney is expected to start his new position Monday.

Note: This post has been edited to indicate that Maloney helped Wayne Parker’s campaign in 2008, not 2010.

Bringing in out of state talent with no ties to Alabama – that worked great for the Tim James campaign.

  • Paul

@ Danny: you need to fix the Parker Griffith section. Did he work against Griffith 3 years ago, when he was a Dem? Last fall as your comment says would mean the NRCC paid him to work against him when he wa a Republican heading into a primary against Mo. I bet you mean 3 years ago.

Who else is/was being considered? Anybody know?

  • 4123

Did any of those campaign equal a win?

  • Thank you, Paul. You are absolutely correct, and I have edited the post.

  • Michael

At least the hired a Republican…

  • Good

Good hire by the GOP Chairman. Not sure who else was considered but TJ should be a good fit for this role. Who did the Democratic Party hire? Who were the candidates for that job? Had to have been a short list!

  • Paul

The Democrats hired Bradley Davidson. He worked for Spark an that weird group run by Donald Stewart. Not much to him and they dis not have a short list from what I was told. Kennedy annointed him.

  • huh?

A bit confused by the name Bradley Davidson, the Dems couldn’t come up with anything better. Was he the field guy for Sparks?

  • Davidson ran Front Door Democracy the Alabama Imprint of Howard Dean’s Democracy for America. The Dems will have better volunteers on the ground. The GOP will have more. Give me trained mercenaries over an army of children.

TJ Maloney will serve as a rubber stamp for Armistead. It’s what the GOP needs…

  • murry

Jim Spearman, the old ED of the Dem Party, left about a month after Turnman. Jim was great at working w/ elected officials, DNC, and Davidson has already had a dust-up since he has been there..maybe the waters will not rise above his head.

The Dem’s need to hire some really good ppl down there but they just may not have the money.

  • exactly…because it’s all going to Joe Reed’s sinking ship

  • AMG

I am kind of underwhelmed with this hire but I guess all he has to do is keep the ship pointed in tge right direction. Any clue who will be the rest of the staff?

  • 4123

Armistead’s Rubber stamp is what The GOP Needs? Please…

  • no name

Armistead is the Alabama GOP’s “Aquaman” . . .never has anything to do in the “Justice League of the GOP” adventures. Mike Hubbard is Superman, Del Marsh is Batman, Minda Riley is Wonder Woman.

  • ted

Hey Brian, think that army of children did a pretty good job kicking the crap out of your mercenaries last year…but when you make things up, then facts don’t matter! Haha

  • Brah

    Brian,

What the hayul is a “better volunteer.” Davidson has a lot of ground to make up to catch what the ALGOP did last year.

  • confused

I am confused by the comment by Brian, is he saying the Dems are now an army of mercenaries?

  • Do Diddy

I understand Armistead’s first choice was Jack and Brent Campbell but found out how liberal they were on social issues and got scared.

  • bobo riley

I understand Armistead’s first choice was Jack and Brent Campbell but found out how liberal they were on social issues and got scared.

  • Brah

That was so clever, it needed to be posted twice?

  • Johnny R

Just because someone supports equal rights for gay people doesn’t mean they are gay.

  • bobo riley

Because it sounded like a parrot. Who distributes this garbage?

  • Sha na na

    Juicy but stupid

  • I’ve always thought Jack Campbell was fairly metro…
And hey, @ted those paid mercenaries were allegiant to the Caesar Reed and his fiefdom. Undoing his influence over field operations is the only way to actually let better vols work. The army of children was a reference to the Glenn Beck rally. The majority of the Beck/Tea Party crowd just talks about how scary a black President is and how bad the deficit is and how the end of days is nigh…and they won’t take home call lists or go knock doors or organize on social networking. The ALGOP in 2010 was better at herding cats than the Joe Reed machine…

@Brah the best field organizers are paid field organizers, so yes…

  • Dirt McGurt

The best field organizers are paid, but the best volunteers are free. n00b.

  • cherrycoke

Bobo and Do (one in the same): Jack Campbell and Brent Buchannon don’t share the same surnames you dingbat, and your intentions here seem pretty transparent. Both are steadfast conservatives. Both are committed to conservative ideology and getting Republicans elected. Social issues? Really? Give me a break, those are so 2008.

  • FreedomsMob

Paul you are correct, Mo set up a committee to run his show against Rep Parker and later hired Brent and Jack to help him with the polished stuff to escort in the W.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
