Covington County has seen nine elected office holders switch while an equally big get was the switch of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff.
The Covington County switchers did sign a brief profession:
“I hereby declare that I am a sitting elected official and that I am switching from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party.
“I endorse and will actively support the principles of the Republican Party, including (but not all inclusive) pro-life, pro-family, pro-free enterprise strong defense and less intrusive government.”
. Others might want to think about reducing their professions to 300-400 characters long, easily grasped by the average voter and suitable for delivery in 30 seconds or less.
Edit: fix thinko that resembled a Old English word we don’t use in public.

I wonder if the Repubs have a procedure in place for refusing some of the switchers. I know they have denied ballot acess for some who supported democrats in the past.
Bailing from a sinking ship!!!!
The above story is of considerable interest to me since I spent virtually my entire career working to help build the Republican Party.
I must say that I find it fascinating that after all the years they have served as local elected Democrats, all of a sudden they have discovered that they were really Republicans all along.
Some will no doubt argue that the Democrat Party has left them. Well, if that is true, it did so long ago under the leadership of such stalwart national Democrat leaders as Johnson, Pelosi, Boxer, Mikulski, Kennedy, et al. And here in Alabama we had Powerful left wing leaders such as Don Seigleman, Paul Hubbert and Joe Reed, and the Alabama Trial Lawyers all of whom have been around for a very long time.
Democrats are and have been America’s liberals since before FDR, and local Democrat elected officials have endorsed them, supported them and financed them…especially in the south.
So why wait till now to come ‘out of the closet’, so to speak? Well, there are two possible explanations. Either they were really liberals and were lying to us about their real political philosophy all these years, or they believed being a Democrat was the only way of being elected.
So, then, what can we take from their recent party switch? Are they really conservative Republicans now, or are they simply lying to us to help them get re-elected? They either lied to us going in…or they lied to us coming out…one or the other,
Welcoming true conservatives into our party is the right thing to do, as long as they are true conservatives. But, there should be no room in the conservative Republican tent for opportunist RHINOS.
If the Democrat party feels they are in tune with the majority of Alabamians, they should bring, Obama, Reid, Kucinich, Conyers, & Frank in to campaign in every county for the incubant Democrats.
Old Pol,
I hear you and I don’t disagree.
On the other hand, lots and lots of local Alabama Democrats are not party-oriented, but ran as Democrats because the office holders in their counties were Democrats.
I do gladly welcome the conservatives who wish to come over. This does not contradict your statements, mind you.
At the same time, these switches reflect the party identification changes in these counties.
Riley’s buddy Jim Main is a Johnny Come lately republican. He gave money to democrats for years until he saw the light, more like he saw the $$$$. We have to be careful that we maintain the purity of the party. People who are true conservatives we welcome with open arms, but trial lawyers and wolves in sheep’s clothing, convenient republicans.. don’t let the door hit you on the way out. We will beat you in the primary and only elect real republicans who share Ronald Reagan’s vision of America.
is johnny goff a demo turned repub turned jailbird? oowee, mockingbird gonna sing, whose gonna buy the diamond ring?
I assume you mean the Ronald Reagan who used to be a Democrat? Or the one who as President exploded the deficit and raised taxes?
Louisianna Attorney General Buddy Caldwell(D) will switch to the GOP by the end of next week.
lol democrats
extinct in AL for the next generation
lol
How many House Repubs and Senate Repubs in Montgomery are there that have switched? See if you can name all the RHINO’S
AS I have always said, I am a fiscal conservative, which is where is think tha most of the persons on this blog belong. However, I will hold person such as JD, Anonymous, Anon, and the rest of you that ceremonously “held my feet to the fire”
I AM A BUSINESSSMAN. FIRST, I EXPECT YOU TO ENSURE THAT MY TAXES DO NOT INCREASE. SECOND, I EXPECT THAT ON A FEDERAL LEVEL MY TAXES DO NO INCREASE. THAT IS WHAT YOU CONTINUALLY PROMISED AND/OR IMPLIED. YOU DID THIS WITHOUT THE P0WER AND/OR THE ABILITY TO DELIVER ON YOUR UNATTAINABLE OR KNOWLEGEABLE ABILITIES.
Since you can do neither of the above, you are idiots, which I have said since the beginning. With the current political and economical climate, I realize that you will have no choice except to raise taxes: you are nothing more than cumulative idiots and liars.
In Sinatra words, “That’s life, you’re riding high in April, shot down in May”
I’m sure the tune will change when the dems are back on top.
Keep hoping, Franks. I doubt you will see that in your lifetime in this state. Alabama has moved on and is not looking back.
Half or more of the sitting Republican Alabama legislators are RINOs. The House members that changed over before the special session did so to get elected in four years – not to mention the fact that they were awarded with cushy committee assignments. I hope their constituents will do some real curb-kicking in the next election and expose these folks for what they really are.
Lets talk about the coward Tom Whatley. He is a member of nobody’s party but his own! Tom will only do what will benefit himself! He talks a good talk but is a coward when it comes to walking the walk. He is NO man!
