Ken Guin Living Large in HD 14?

The back of a new GOP mailer against Guin

Two new ads in House District 14 are attacking Ken Guin, a Democrat and the  House Majority Leader, for “Enjoying the perks of office – on our dime.”

The mailer is titled “All in a Day’s Work”.  Inside the fold it features a picture of a large home and a Porsche, both “THAT YOU PAID FOR” the ad reads.  The big hitter in the ad is a claim that Guin receives “as many as THREE different government paychecks that total more than $130,000 per year.”

The claim cites a 2007 article by The Birmingham News, “Lawmaker paid by 2 schools for the same work” that you can read in its entirety here.  According to the Birmingham News piece, Guin received two salaries simultaneously from Shelton State Community College and Bevill State Community College totaling over $98,000 in addition to his legislative salary from the time of his hire in December 1999 to the time of the article’s publishing in March 2007.

While the article does not detail all of his responsibilities for the two schools, it says, “[Guin] often submitted the same work reports to both schools and made reference to his state legislative business in some work summaries.”  It goes on to say that the reports were submitted monthly for at least his first year, but they became as infrequent as three in 2003 until he started to submit them monthly again in mid-2006.

The mailer was paid for by the Alabama Republican Party and can be viewed here (pdf).

A radio spot paid for by the 136 Years PAC  also features the Birmingham News article in addition to pointing out, “Ken Guin voted himself a 62% legislative pay raise.”

Guin is running against Republican Richard G. Baughn in his quest for a fifth term in the house.  Baughn is a political newcomer, and a UPS truck driver.  Guin recently criticized Baughn for calling himself a “businessman” in a direct mail piece.

Is the GOP establishment using some of Byrne’s left over war chest to pay for these ads?

  • Proud AEA member

Baughn’s ex wife appears in Guin’s latest ad……also shows photo of Baughn in his UPS uniform….great ad….if Baughn is elected one best hope no special session during Christmas…….

  • Cheese and Rice

He looks nice in that brown uniform. Guin just wishes he had that much hair on his head.

  • District 14 Friend

Ken Guin shows his desperation and panic at the mere thought of losing his power, clout and identity. He long ago lost his way…..in our area he is showing his true colors more each day. He’s so small-minded that he posted a sign on his office that no longer would they accept packages from any UPS delivery men……childish and petty. How low will he go? The next 18 days will show us. Can Bingo bosses and Paul Hubbert save his hide? He’s the poster boy for term limits.

  • Woody

Whoever is paying for the ads is long overdue in pointing out the outright theft of taxpayer dollars by Guin and his multiple jobs with the two-year college system. Besides that, the fact that he reportedly directed state legal work to his private practice should be an issue in this race.

Can anybody, democrat or republican, offer a valid reason why we shouldn’t expect a triple dipper like Guin to be indicted and be responsible for paying back the state’s taxpayers for what he ripped off?

  • District 14 Friend

    Woody,

Agree with you…….he is the one of the worst offenders to abuse the public trust for private gain. Not only does he triple dip for himself, but he votes on issues that affect his wife’s salary as a public employee (school principal). Too much living off the taxpayers like you and me. I hope he has a day of reckoning sooner rather than later.

  • guin

These are good ads and effective, unlike Guin’s desperation ads with 2 weeks left. Guin could rub his fat head all day long and he’s still going to lose. The problem with Guin is that he paid Baughn’s ex wife to just flat out lie. Man if Baughn is the devil, wonder why he has the kids?

Guin has served as Speaker Hammett’s water boy in the HOR. Hammett put Guin in positions on various key committees to make sure that only legislation the speaker approves of will go forward.

It’s up to the voters in HD14 to remove him from office if he should be, but I doubt that they will because too many of them enjoy feasting on the bacon he brings home from taxpayers throughout the state. Guin isn’t nearly the only incumbent who remains in office, often far too long, at taxpayer expense by a long shot.

  • District 14 Friend

    TWAY_Kris @ 5:44am,

To answer your question: Sleezy bottom-feeding.
If it’s as you say on your site, “Guin fighting back” then he is truly panicked and has zero to offer his constituents (other than paying cheerleader groups to do his campaigning). This is as low as it gets. Wonder how much he paid this women to exploit her? There are children involved….that’s how much Ken “cares about the children” (what Dems always say….tagged on to so many issues). For both this woman and Ken Guin (and he’s a dad!) to do this to her children is beyond despicable…..If voters have a lick of sense this will backfire bigtime.

Guin can find nothing positive to campaign on???? Not surprised…..he has to hide his record rather than highlight it. So he changes the subject completely……coward. How low can you go, Ken? We’ll see.

  • FedEx Driver

Once he’s elected, Baughn better not ever spend his money on anything. What will happen at the next election?

“Richard Baughn used taxpayer monies and deliverd to himself! He actually bought himself a septic tank.”

You know on second thought…I kind of hope he does actually buy himself a septic tank.

  • NoKoolAid4Me

Guin is also trying to hide behind a website he formed to bash Baughn. What are the issues he is running on again? All that comes to mind is the head rubbing commercial…… Shameful tactics. He doesn’t care about the damage that has been done to the relationship of the Baughn children and their estranged mother. Lisa Corbin Baughn has an extensive DUI record. How she continues to work at an elementary school where she was caught driving without a license by the staff is beyond me. Maybe the Superintendent of Winston County, Sue Reed, would like to address that question. The woman needs help, not exploited on television or enabled by people against Richard Baughn.

  • FedEx Driver

So, do you throw your wife out because/IF she got a DUI? Are the school employees now police? Is the Winston County’s Superintendent now the reason people should vote for Richard Baughn?

Come on…Ken Guin as done a lot for his area. Did he buy his wife a new car? Yes. Was it with “TAXPAYER” money? No. Once this “TAXPAYER” money goes to a legislator’s salary, it’s personal money. With some of ya’lls way of thinking, every school teacher buys her groceries with TAXPAYER money…like she stole it from the Governor or something. Every policeman uses TAXPAYER money to buy his little kid new shoes.

I don’t know Richard Baughn. Perhaps he’s a good guy, but right now the only thing most of us know about him is that he drives a UPS truck. I’m not knocking that (despite my name), but it takes more than that to be a good state rep. Just always remember that there’s a reason Ken Guin has had more money spent against him this election than anyone else in the state house…the Republicans want to take over. They don’t care about HD14, they don’t care about Richard Baughn or his wife, or his children. They don’t care about us who live in the area. They only want to give Ken’s committee seats to someone else so they can control the state legislature. Baughn will get stuck on some low-lifer committee (if he’s lucky) and he’ll have the privilege of bringing home the same trinket of pork that all reps get. Our district will be set back years, assuming Baughn could ever work his way up to where Ken has.

Don’t get suckered by the party politics coming out of Montgomery and Auburn…they only want Ken gone, and don’t care about Baughn.

  • Cheese and Rice

I do believe the DUI’s and the supposed driving without a license goes to the “character” of the person putting herself out on this new commercial. Ken truly is the poster child for term limits. 16 years is too long for anyone of any party to hold an office. Time to move on with some new blood and new thoughts. If the people of HD14 aren’t happy four years from now with their choice, then by all means choose someone else. This new “gotcha” commercial screams of desperation of the part of Ken Guin.

  • JD

Once this “TAXPAYER” money goes to a legislator’s salary, it’s personal money.

Not according to the LAW. But Guin’s above the LAW?

  • REK

Great piece. One of the best negative pieces I have seen this cycle.

  • Woody

Fed Ex Driver: I suspect you’ll come up with a case of lockjaw when you read this, but please help us understand your justification for supporting Guin.

You don’t mention the cold hard facts regarding his triple dipping ripoff of taxpayers via the bogus two-year community college jobs, as well as his directing state legal work to his private practice. His bogus time sheets provide additional proof of the outright lying and stealing he’s done.

From Guin’s House of Representatives website, this quote: “Representative Guin works as an attorney and serves as a Lay Leader at First United Methodist Church of Carbon Hill. He is also Chairman of Trustees for the Southwest District of the United Methodist Church.”

I wonder if he really thinks his actions are consistent with his touting of his alleged faith and church activities.

Got anything to say, Fed Ex? (I think I hear crickets chirping)

  • LivinginHD14

In regards to what FedEx Driver said and also to what Cheese and Rice said not only does Lisa Baughn have a record of DUI’s the reason Richard left her is because she was having an affair with a Dr in order to obtain pills. So not only does the DUI’s go against her character now she has cheating wife and pill head added to that as well. Richard didn’t leave her cause she had Lupas he left her cause she was cheating on him. It’s really low of Ken Guin to bring Richard’s ex wife into the picture and use her to try and say something bad about her ex husband, but anyone that lives in the area where Richard is from knows the truth about what really happened.

  • Gypsie

This is just low down dirty politics. With 16 years in office you would think Mr. Guin would be able to run on his record of doing good for his district rather than stooping to this. I’ve supported Mr. Guin in numerous other elections but I can not condone nor support him in this effort. Vote Richard Baughn on November 2nd!

  • Sam

    FedEx Driver..

FYI, all 3 of her DUI’s came after she had already left, with the first being like 5-6 months afterwards. How she still has a job at the school is beyond me. LivinginHD14 is totally right in her statements above. Richard is only running for the sake of the people in this district, something Ken Guin forgot about a long time ago. I think Ken’s actions since the last election have done him in.

  • guin

Anyone heard about Guin running a poll or AEA running one for him? Seems there has to be a reason that such an established legislator that has “delivered” for so many in the district would have to turn to this type of attack?

That goes for Zeb too, AEA member peek out your door and see if your daddy will throw you the polling books on these two and report back your findings.

  • concerned citizen

People need to get the facts straight. Lisa never had an affair. She was never hooked on drugs. And her “children” are adults, they are old enough to know better than to believe these lies about their mother. Their father is saying these things about Lisa to make himself look like the offended party. Those of us that really know them, know the truth!!!!!!
Also, if Baughn gets elected, I want to know what his response will be to those of you who campaigned for him when you go to him for help.

  • Interesting

Uh huh, concerned citizen is the only person who has ever tried to defend the ex wife. She has a problem. The kids know it as does the community which is why this ad is so despicable. It’s not lupus either. Disgusting attack by a desperate man, guess his big head isn’t lucky anymore.

  • Regardless of Baughns ex-wife which was as tacky as it gets, if Ken Guin has done so much then why all the mud slinging if he had done so much good for us then his record would speak for itself… oh i guess it is . Richard Baughn doesnt have the experience that Ken has true but where has that gotten us other than a crook and lier out of Ken Guin. We need a change and that can be made Nov 2 I truly support Richard Baughn and the situation between him and his ex is personal and I guarantee you there is dirt in the Guins home life as well. If you live in a glass house you shouldnt throw stones I hope this comes back and bites the Guins where it hurts. Ken might act like he is all about church and morals but I know for a fact he is a liar and scam.

  • Cheese and Rice

Concerned Citizen: Regardless if the “children” are adults or not they are HER children and I can’t even imagine the hurt and anguish this is causing them. Last time I checked alcohol IS considered a drug and numerous DUI’s is an excellent sign that there is a substance abuse problem. I know I will be voting for Richard and at last count 50 members of my immediate family have pledged their support for him also. Rather than making silly robo calls, my family will be making personal calls on behalf of Richard.

  • Sam

    Concerned citizen…
You obviously don’t have your facts straight. She left when her daughter was only 18 yrs. old and hadn’t even started college, and u consider her an “adult?” Let me ask you also, are you not aware that she has a suspended driver’s license that is a result of not one, two, but 3 dui’s over the past 2 years? Records don’t lie. I saw the latest arrest report with my own 2 eyes. What a terrible mother and a heartless politician to allow the ad to begin with. Ken has no chance whatsoever! Praying for RGB and his family, I know this has to be tough on his kids. I’ve known Richard for several years and he is just the person we could use in Montgomery.

  • concerned citizen

Ive known richard for several years also and he is just what we need in montgomery if we want to be a laughing stock!

  • Cheese and Rice

    I think we already are.

  • Newsjunkie

Fed Ex Driver I agree with everything you have written. This is completely a tactic used against Ken Guin by the Republican party. They have spent A LOT of money against him all in the name of taking over the house and the senate.

To everyone else screaming about double dipping and ethics, don’t you know anything about politics? Are you that idealistic to think they are down there actually trying to do some good? That’s true comedy.

  • Yep

They sure have spent a lot of money to oust the types of crooks like guin, and then entire state should send the GOP a thank you card. With ken, zeb, Wendell, Lowell and co gone, things might actually get done!

  • Tony fromTownley

Concerned citizen maybe you need to read Cory Baughn’s reply in the comments section of the Lisa Baughn commercial thread. Seems HE may have a little more insight than you.

  • FedEx Driver

Again…no disrespect to Baughn. The Repub establishment (notice I did not say Republicans), but the establishment doesn’t care one iota about Richard, or his kids, or his wife; and especially about HD14. They want Guin gone. Right now, that may seem to be what some of you want, but what happens when you have party leaders controlling Montgomery and HD14 gets nothing? Trust me…the leadership in the Republican party be a much more controlling party than the Dems. Good or bad – ya’ll better hope we get something for our District once Baughn beats Guin.

Now, I hear what you’re saying about Guin’s paychecks. My rebuttal question is: “If he’s a criminal, why isn’t he in jail?” Sue Schmitz is in jail. Roy Johnson is on his way. Why not Ken? We can talk about laws all day, but don’t you think that if Ken Guin was a criminal, he would be arrested? Baughn’s mailer insinuates that Guin bought his house and car with illegal money. Baughn can’t prove that. Even if a legislator literally stole money…how do you prove what he bought with it? Can Guin’s law practice not purchase a house or a car without him being corrupt and in taxpayer pockets?

  • Cory Baughn

Concerned citizen, I have seen your posts before, but the one about us needing to “know” better is extremely demeaning to our judgement and intelligence. I am a University Honor’s student at UAB and on the road to graduate and start the M.P.A./J.D. program next fall. My sister, Katie, is in the Nursing Program at Bevill State Jasper and on the road to graduate in May with her R.N. degree. I believe that we are plenty capable to examine the hard facts and make a judgement on any matter, especially one as personal as family. Please refer to my comments on the ad that features my mother if you would like the truth about the night she left. -Cory

WHY WERE CHARGES DROPPED AGAINST LISA BAUGHN’S RECENT ARREST FOR DUI. NO RECORD. PROPERTY DAMAGE REPORTED. HANDCUFFED AND WAS REMOVED FROM SCENE. ARE OUR CHILDREN SAFE TO HAVE HER DRIVING OUR ROADS WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE. CONCERNED PARENT.

I will let you know his response. I have a project in the works that is going to follow ALL the legislators this next session and report back to THE PEOPLE. I am sick of ineffective government!

Those children are adults. This is politics. Welcome. Also, no one has said anything about the Guin kids. They are way younger than Baughn’s children. I’m sure they are just as affected.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
