More Names in Arrests This Morning

al.com mentions Harri Anne Smith, Milton McGregor and also this:

Also arrested today have been state senators Jim Preuitt, R-Talladega, Quinton Ross, D-Montgomery, Larry Means, D-Attalla, Harri Anne Smith, I — Slocomb and Montgomery lobbyist Jerrod Massey.

I defer to their reporting, though I had been trying to confirm word heard here that Massey had not been arrested. I was also trying to confirm that Quinton Ross was not arrested because he was out of town and that he was making arrangements to turn himself in.

More to come. That’s what happens when you ahve 2 years of recorded conversations.

  • InsideKnowledge

Veritas is right, there will be several (probably a LOT) more.

  • Zossy

The DOJ news conference should be starting momentarily (scheduled for 10 a.m.). Channel 6 in the B’ham area will be carrying it live.

GOP abuse of power at it’s finest.

  • Veritas

Hey 12345678 — Must be nice living in a world where fantasy is reality. Explain to me how the GOP is behind the arrests when the investigation is being run our of Democrat US Attorney Eric Holder’s Public Inegrity Division in Washington, D.C.?

    Give it a rest.

  • InsideKnowledge

“GOP abuse of power at it’s finest.”

    Eric Holder switched parties?

  • Simon Primary

Don’t confuse these guys with the facts. This is Obama’s justice department dropping the hammer. Does anyone think Obama or Holder care about ALabama? We didn’t vote for the guy, he hasn’t even appointed a new US Attorney in Montgomery.

  • GG

McGregor, Gilley, Massey, Geddie, Crosby, Senator Smith, Senator Preuitt, Senator Means, Senator Ross. Still looking for Coker. And there’s one other I didn’t catch.

  • Speechless

    Bob Geddie – Holy crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mj

Precisely, Simon. The US Attorney is the same Bush hack with ties to Bob Riley.

And do you really mean to tell me that you don’t find the timing of all of this a little suspicious? Less than a month before the election, right when the majority of voters start paying attention to the elections. This smacks of cronyism and dirty politics.

  • Simon Primary

Yep, mj – Obama is doing his best to get the Alabama Senate to switch to republicans. I guess we’d better vote for him next time. Revenge is sweet served cold.

But I sure did love the absolute non-answers the guy from DC gave about why they were ignoring Department of Justice policy about withholding acting on indictments within certain time frames from elections, and his misstatement about the Middle District office having recused, when apparently only the US Attorney herself has recused, when the people who report to her have not.

  • waltm

Thought the US Assistant AG was pretty plain about his division being large and charge of this matter. However, everyone knows an Obama appointee and former Special Counsel to President Clinton is just a sock puppet for Alabama Republicans.

  • Anon #2

Everyone should read the indictments and cross reference them with FCPA reports. You should be able to figure out who all three of the unnamed Legislators are.

  • shin530

Danny, Danny, Danny! I’ve been posting for some time that the Good Senator Means from Etowah was going to be indicted. Seems my post are always held for moderation and never posted! Maybe I was correct! Sure looks like it. Since this will never be posted, at least you and I’ll know I was correct! Right?

    Walt-
I presume your comments were at least partially in response to my earlier one. I have no quarrel with what you say 9nor did I call Breuer a “sock puppet” for anyone), but you certainly cannot believe that Breuer plainly answered the two questions I referenced plainly and forthrightly. I always thought if you were going to have a press conference, be ready to answer questions, don’t be wishy washy and misstate important facts or avoid answering. That was my point. Say plainly why you couldn’t wait four weeks and then announce the indictments, which is what DOJ policy would certainly seem to call for. Say plainly that Leura Garrett Canary recused, that the matter is being supervised in DC, but that two senior deputies in the Middle District are involved, don’t claim that the Middle District recused. It just makes it look more misguided to those with tinfoil hats if you aren’t clear and up front about everything.

  • waltm

Or did Breuer speak in that dialect known as “Lawyer English” where nothing is as it seems? Loover the post at Main Justice, which was all over the Sieglman case.

re: timing, since Pouncy’s plea agreement and information was filed in open court on 9/24/10, when would be a good time to serve the indictments that would not result in howls of “politically motivated persecution”?

As far as affecting the election, one isn’t running, one is unopposed, Smith will find her supporters even more energized and Means will have to work hard. Otherwise, Sparks has been knocked off his “Bentley’s gonna raise your taxes, I’m more conservative than John Wayne” pace but can pick it up, the Democrat base will be riled up and turn out (so much for that mid term low turn out), who loses?

  • princeliberty

Waltm needs to come back down to reality. But don’t worry Milton has the names of Republicans and Democrats in his little black book.
Republicans will end up going to jail along with Democrats – though probably far more Democrats. Many more than this group are going down.

Take Troy King for instance – you can bet he is heading for jail!

  • waltm

What is reality in campaign season but the product of the spin doctors? Like those we see operating here today, spinning a tale of Republican evil vs those spinning a tale of Democratic evil when what we have is a tale of greed.

    Amen Walt, Amen

  • shin530,

Your comments are regularly posted including ones mentioning Larry Means. (This Google search will take you right to some.)

Anyone wondering why a particular comment is not posted usually may find an answer in the site’s comment policy.

Means is a Dem, Ross Jr. is a Dem, & Preuitt was a career Dem until he switched to GOP April 2nd 2010 in an attempt to save his political backside; so how is this a GOP scandal exactly?

Just another excuse to grab a pitch fork & clean the barn.
    Nov 2nd is trash day.
    BTW
My 1st clue they were mainly Dem’s was they didn’t mention any party affiliation in the AP story I read.

  • RC2010

I worked for the state Alabama, in the state house with the senators and representative and this is absolutley absurd. For those who dont realize that this case is politically motivated is to be ignorant as to how politics are ran nation wide. Mr. Ross is one of the few good ones left and it is sad that Riley is trying to tarnish his future. Much love and prayers for Mr.Ross, his family, friends and supporters.

  • not shocked

Wish Fob would come back into office. He didn’t tolerate this type of mess in Montgomery. That’s why he was so hated by the career politicians.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
