Preuitt drops out of the SD 11 race

According the Montgomery Advertiser’s South Union Street blog, Jim Preuitt has dropped out.  Why is unknown.    Prueitt had switched (without a lot of fanfare) to the Republican party recently after being a fellow traveler for Senate Republican’s in recent years.

This probably means the near certainty of Jerry Fielding ‘s (D) election [...]

LETTERS TO DIXIE: From nowhere

I was at a classmate’s house one afternoon when I was 9 when his mother asked me,”Why do you talk like a Yankee?” There was a lightness to my accent, a clearness in my enunciation and diction that made me sound unmistakably foreign her.

The question confused me. I had been born a twenty-minute drive south to garment factory worker and a laborer for TVA, spent most of my life a five-minute walk from her house off of a rural Lauderdale County road and never traveled farther north than Waverly, Tenn.

But I had been accepted into a gifted program at school a few months before, so I picked the answer she wanted to hear, even if I did not think it terribly applied to me or, if it did, made me any different from her.

“I don’t know,” I said. “I guess I’m just smart.”

She enjoyed it quite a bit. Continue reading “LETTERS TO DIXIE: From nowhere”

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

[...]

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
