Terri Sewell continues to out-money her competition in the Democratic primary for Alabama’s 7th Congressional District, according to pre-primary financial disclosures filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission. These disclosures (of which I posted Shelia Smoot’s to update this post*) cover the period between April 1 and May 12 but first I’ll mention the overall campaign numbers, then I’ll note some details.
Total receipts, cycle-to-date, as of May 12:
- Sewell $783,308
- Earl Hilliard, Jr. $328,417
- Smoot $101,073
- Martha Bozeman $37,782
Cash on hand as of May 12:
- Sewell $120,947
- Hilliard $43,256
- Smoot $12,004
- Bozeman $222
Contributions April 1 to May 12:
- Sewell $95,119
- Hilliard $45,689
- Smoot $7,632
- Bozeman $7,614
Contributions reported since May 12:
- Sewell $69,000 — including $39,000 of her own money
- Hilliard $26,400
Sewell got a boost in February with the EMILY’s List endorsement, which has brought upwards of $40,000 into her campaign. While Sewell reports raising $95,119 from April 1 to May 12, she spent nearly $300,000 during the period. The recent $39,000 addition of her own money is no paltry sum — but it’s expensive to be on television for a month leading up to the primary.
Speaking of self-funding… Bozeman paid herself $2,900 out of her campaign in “compensation” and “salary campaign” since December. She recently was put on notice by the FEC that this is an improper use of campaign funds and she has until June to fix it. Other than that, Bozeman reports $7,614 in contributions and $11,127 in expenditures during this reporting period, leaving her with just $222 cash on hand.
Hilliard reports $45,689 in contributions from April 1 to May 12 but spent $96,953 during the same period, mostly on campaign staff for “voter outreach/ field coordination” and radio time. As he’s still raising money, maybe more media will follow.
Smoot spent $17,780 between April 1 and May 12 and raised less than $8,000 during the period. (I haven’t yet seen her detailed disclosures, see below.)

* Smoot was put on notice Friday by the FEC for failure to file her pre-primary report and on first draft I could not find her disclosures at the same area of the FEC site where I got the other candidates’ disclosures. A commenter directed me to the overview Smoot’s disclosure statements, which can be found here.

Wow — thanks, Progressive E. I am currently updating the post.
Could care less. The whole district needs to be investigated by the feds.
Would you like a little more tea?
Mad Hatter-
Sorry that Martha Bozeman is not catching fire financially. Martha is a good person
Shocking that a Teabagger would want the federal jack-booted thugs to focus on a predominantly black district.
Only money that matters in Cong 7 is “walking around” money. Don’t know what they will do since Raby is busy in Cong 5.
