What is the likelihood, what are the odds, of your favorite candidates being elected in November? I do appreciate the elected officials, political professionals, and party insiders on both sides of the aisle who offer their candid input to the Political Parlor for the sake of the Alabama Line.
The up and down arrows indicate whether the likelihood of November election has gone up or down since the last update of the Alabama Line.

Money advantage clearly puts him a leg up in the primary.
(R) Troy King (6:1)
Taken hits, recovery at this point would be a surprise.
(D) Giles Perkins (11:1)
Anderson gets on the air first. Can Perkins make up ground?

Solid candidate, but Anderson’s money advantage may sink her.
Secretary of State

Incumbent is going to be tough to unseat.

This could be the Supreme Court race where the Dems run strongest.
(R) Tom Parker (5:2)
Weakest of the GOP Court incumbents.
(R) Eric Johnston (5:2)
Parker opponents may be gathering behind Johnston’s campaign.
(R) James Houts (7:1)
Hoped to rally Parker opposition in his corner.
Public Service Commission, Pl. 1
(D) Jan Cook (2:3)
Buck’s Pocket is littered with those who have underestimated Jan Cook.
(R) Twinkle Cavanaugh (7:2)
Her name ID advantage makes her the frontrunner for the nomination.
(R) Chip Beeker (6:1)
No sign that campaign has overcome Cavanaugh’s late entry into the race.
(R) Stephen Evans (26:1)
Build a little name ID, maybe run another year…
Public Service Commission, Pl. 2
(D) Susan Parker (1:2)
One of the Dems with biggest crossover support.
(R) Terry Dunn (5:1)
This is the eager candidate’s third race to enter this cycle.

Would take an unusually strong GOP year to oust the incumbent.

Will have an uphill battle against a tough Republican nominee.

Will key backing from ALFA put the first-time candidate over the top?

Peterson’s gain looks to come at his expense.

Longshot caught lightning in a bottle with internet ad.

His loss would be the biggest Alabama political story of the year.

See William G. Barnes.

Not this time.
3rd Congressional District
(R) Mike Rogers (1:19)
Incumbent has secured the seat in a district where Dems expect to play.

A last minute entry after Josh Segall’s late exit from the race.

Democrats believe they can run strong in this race.

A candidate stronger than his campaign.

Strong fundraising gives him an edge in the primary.
(D) Taze Shepard (4:1)
Leapfrogged in our rankings by Raby and his commercials.
(R) Les Phillip (36:1)
Has a base. Uneven campaign and Griffith’s switch have done him in.
(D) Mitchell Howie (>99:1)
Not enough room here after Shepard and Raby.
(D) David Maker (>99:1)
See Mitchell Howie.
6th Congressional District
(R) Spencer Bachus (1:49)
Democrats can’t scare up a nominal candidate in this district.
(R) Stan Cooke (>99:1)
We’re looking at Clint Moser territory here.
(R) Paul Lambert (>99:1)
Ditto.
7th Congressional District

Her impressive fundraising hasn’t yet propelled her to a clear lead.
(D) Earl Hilliard, Jr (2:1)
Great name ID. Garnering support from numerous grassroots groups.
(D) Shelia Smoot (7:3)
Name ID appears to be keeping her in a tight race against strong opponents.
(D) Martha Bozeman (24:1)
Hard to find a place among better funded & more well-known candidates.
(R) Don Chamberlain (>99:1)
You like it when both parties show up to play, but this district stays Dem.
(R) Carol Hendrickson (>99:1)
Ditto.
(R) Chris Salter (>99:1)
Same.
(R) Michele Waller (>99:1)
Yep.
(I) Eddison Walters (>99:1)

About Shelby, his loss wold be the biggest Alabama story of the decade.
Y’all are way underestimating James though. Perhaps you should talk with more voters on the streets than political insiders in Montgomery.
Just sayin…
What progress as Erwin made in the Lt. Gov. race? Word is Ivey has TV time bought all way to June 1 and name ID is completely different league than Erwin. Erwin picked up the right-wing endorsements, but unless Roy Moore rallies his troops to the polls, Erwin is hopelessly outgunned. This fight has already moved on to Folsom v. Ivey.
… and in this anti-incumbent, do nothing senate, ineffetive leadership– Ivey might win.
just sayin.
Your crazy(or on her staff) if you think Ivy could win in November.
Mo Brooks’ ads had just started rolling when PG started attacking. Mo Brooks was the front runner before spending past his first $50k. PG’s chances at winning the Republican Primary or the general election are both lower than 5:2. Parker would traditionally have better chances but in this anti-incumbent, anti-politics as usual atmosphere an incumbent party switcher does not stand much of a chance against a proven conservative with a strong grass roots operation.

In the CD2 Republican primary, isn’t Roby this year’s “chosen one” by the “leaders” of ALGOP who also anointed Jay Love to defeat Bright?
Those folks must be just throwing aimless darts and hoping for the best. Maybe the ALGOP needs new leaders who don’t wear party blindfolds and can see the light and hit a candidate who has the best chance to defeat Bright.
Roby has to be the one for the GOP in AL02. From reading on here and talking around town Barber has way too many skeletons in his closet.
I mean the guy owns a pool hall, how many owners of pool halls have ever been honest???????????? I can’t recall one. I think the ALGOP is smarter than you think and see the obvious
I agree with the conventional wisdom, barring some major scandel, Byrne is in the run-off and it will be extremely close beween James and Moore as to who takes second–I say too close to call now because the question so greatly pivots on turn-out (GOTV) and not so much the popularity of the candidate in polling–the fact that this primary comes a day after a major get-of-town school-is-out summer holiday makes the turn-out question even more difficult to predict (for me at least).
I will vote for Ivy but I think Folsom will be hard to beat. But, if there was ever a year for “safe” Democrats to lose, this would be it.
2nd District is tough–I say maybe a run-off between Roby and Bell. Roby has more money and I think Bell is better known than people might think (around the state). I still think either one of them will beat Bright–not because of any awful thing he has done–but this just because this is a particualrly bad year to run as a Democrat in Alabama. I could be wrong.
If democrats lose control it will be a sad day for Alabama. Good bye federal contracts. Good bye federal jobs. Good bye federal emergency assistance. Good bye federal roads. Good bye federal Space program. Good bye federal everything. Alabama will be a *cough* Christian, cotton, confederate, red, republican state.
Again.
Look away. Look away. Look away Dixie land.
Redeye, now I know how you got your nickname, you were up too late last night drinking rotgut again.
Let’s see, the prevalence of federal roads is most closely associated with a Republican president–(ever see the signs “Eisenhower Interstate Highway System”?)
Federal Space Program–supported by all presidents until your guy (Obama) wanted to dust-bin it.
We have had a GOP governor for the past 7 and 1/2 years and I haven’t seen the feds take any stars off the flag. Riley even drew up his budget counting on federal largess.
Odds are that we will have a Republican Congress in six months and a Republican President in 3 years. We actually might have a better working relationship with the feds if we have Republican control over the legislature and the Governor’s office.
So, I wouldn’t exactly be closing the post office yet, Redeye. (And water down that booze down a little, would you? A mind is terrible thing to waste.)
Mr. Conseravative,
Before we engage in a discussion on this issue, can we agree to have a civil, respectful, discussion without resorting to name calling, personal attacks or insults? In other words, attack what I say, but don’t attack me, and vice versa.
Actually I got my nick name because red is my favorite color,Alabama is considered a red state and I keep my redEYE on the Red State.
I am a proud, unashamed, bleeding heart liberal. I believe in a woman’s right to chose to have a safe legal abortion. I believe every American should have access to quality, affordable health care. I am a product of the Alabama public school system. I gladly pay taxes. I believe in God and I go to church every Sunday. I believe in equal rights, civil rights and human rights. I am anti war and pro peace. I don’t drink, except wine on occassion, I don’t smoke and I try not to curse. That doesn’t make me your enemy or you mine. We are both human beings. Let’s treat each other as such.
It is my belief tolerant people can agree to disagree without being disagreeable.
As for the Eisenhower Road system, Esienhower is the republican President who sent troops to Little Rock Arkansas to integrate the public schools, not the republican President who sent our troops to Iraq for nothing, and raided the surplus to give his rich cronies a tax cut and create debt as far as the eye can see. Furthermore President Barack Obama (Democrat) is in control of the Federal Highway system now.
Actually President Obama wants to move the Federal Space Program to a state that supported him and supports him. To the victor goes the spoils. Which makes my point about bye, bye federal everything. At least with a democratic Governor and legislature we won’t be thrown completly under the bus. I wish Alabama would stop biting off it’s nose to spite itself. I really do.
Riley drew up his budget on federal largess all the while bashing and trashing the federal government. We see how well that worked out don’t we?
We had a republican Congress, a republican Senate, a republican Supreme Court for 12 years under Reagan/Bush and 8 years under Dubya/Dick, both of whom drove the country into a ditch like drunk frat boys. Why the heck would we give them the keys to car to they can drive us into the ditch again? Republicans had their chance and they blew it.
Republicans care more about their party than they do our country. The rich get richer and the rest get the shaft.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste and a hard thing to change. :)
As a resident of SD 14, I can honestly say a Lt. Gov win by Hank Erwin would be terrible for Alabama.
I’m just glad he left his senate seat to run…
Redeye, if you thought I was insulting you instead of engaging in a little blogger bragadociousness–to quote Governor Christie of NJ, “You must have the thinnest skin in America.”
But, Redeye, your politics are all over the map. You denigrate Alabama for reverting to bad old days of Confederacy, cotton, Christianity (wait, I thought you said in the last post you were a Christian)–but what party was in charge of the state for all those bad ol’ days? Pretty sure it was Democrats. The Alabama Republican party could have had their convention in a phone booth prior to 1988 and the election of Perry Hooper, Sr.
I do admire you owning up to being a liberal, most liberals don’t. But liberal policies both in this state and this nation have been a flop. You think saying “Yes, we can” makes it so. And, frankly, Redeye (take a deep breath, don’t let this damage your fragile psyche), you sound incredibly naive. Anti-war, pro-peace huh? Looks great on paper, but its a roadmap to slavery in reality. We don’t need to let you run the government. “Give peace a change” or “Imagine there were no countries” is not effective foreign policy.
Not that war is pretty but it, unfortunately, is often necessary and effective. Where would be today without the great wars? Think Hitler would have suddenly started to play nice once he took over Europe?
As the song says,”War, what is it good for?”
Good question, let’s see, saving Western Civilization, preventing genocide, freeing millions from the rule of tyrants, need I go on?
On the Reagan/Bush years—you really weren’t paying much attention were you? I bet you were born in like the 80s. (Is this unfair? Hurtful? Just a question.) I know liberals like to use the “drove the car into the ditch” analogy alot, but it isn’t really applicable and it is getting a little frayed around the edges due to overuse. I think you’ve spend too much time over on Josh Marshall’s Talking Points Memo or the Huffington-Puffington Report. (There I go again, darnit, just can’t seem to help myself.)
That nice enough, Redeye? I am sure you are a great guy, just a tad naive and superior-sounding to us poor, old, country-bumpkins who have not elevated ourselves to your level of enlightenment yet.
At least Dems are FOR something and repubs are against everything. If you don’t believe a president can hurt a State ,drive by old Craig Field in Selma, take a look at what was the the second busiest airport in the world (Brookley Field) or whip by Ft Mac in Anniston and just wait for the next BRAC to get a grip on Ft Rucker. Maxwell and Gunter got semi- whacked in the last BRAC but managed to survive but it is not too late to get them next time. When you have a US Senator tell two different stories about whether a nominee for the US Sup Ct needs to have prior judicial experience in the space of 2 hours on the national Sunday morning shows, you know you have some problems w/leadership. Shelby got booted from the Intel committee because he could not keep his mouth shut about the nation’s secrets and now fights against increased liability for an oil company that has managed to ruin a major body of water for tens of years and who fights to let the Wall St crooks stay unregulated you have leadership problems. Now, our repub Sup Ct has allowed the governor to create a private army to “enforce the law” so thoughts of a Huey Long dicatorship start to come true w/a repub controlled legislature. Too much power in too few hands. This state has a leadership crisis and it gets worse every day with the likes of Fob 2 ,Roy Moore,t-boy King, the great Twinkle and the cowboy Ag candidate. How sad for the State that produced Lister Hill,Carl Elliot, Howell Heflin & John Sparkman. We just deserve better.
Huey Long, of course, was a Democrat. Siegelman, convicted and awaitng prison–a Democrat. Edwin Edwards, former LA governor, convicted and imprisoned, Democrat.
Sure, Democrats are for something–public money in their pockets, taxing other people so they can enrich themselves and their friends, cronyism, good-old-boy network, letting special interests run the state.
It’s Byrne who has to worry about making the runoff right now – not James.
Mr. Conservative you must have democrats confused with republicans, they are the culture of corruption and cronyism, they just don’t get prosecuted, indicted, and imprisioned by the republican controlled judicial system. Ask Mark Foley, David Vitter, Dick Army, Ted Stevens, Bob Livingston, Newt Gringrich, etal.
Alabama is the state of the confederacy because your crowd effectively obstruct the democratic agenda. Ask former Governor Don Siegelman, convicted and awaiting prison because he dared push for an education lottery. And btw, Don Siegelman was not convicted and awaiting prison because he put public money in his pocket or enriched himself and his friends or for letting special interest run the state. Don Siegelman is not rich. If he were rich he wouldn’t have been convicted and awaiting prison.
What liberal policies have been a flop Mr. Conservative? Be specific. Again you must have liberal policies confused with republican policies like all war all the time and debt as far as the eye can see.
All war all the time, unfair and unbalanced is not an effective foreign policy, nor is spredding freedom to the far countries or the earth, nor is pre-emptive war, nor is stay the course, nor is we don’t cut and run. Ask Bush and Dick how effective that was. Ask our sons and daughters who are fighting, dying, being wounded and maimed for life in Iraq and Afghanistan how effective that is.
republicans, aided and abetted by some cowardly democratics, sent our troops to war based on DEAD WRONG INTELLIGENCE, to look for WMD that was NOT there, without body armor and without an exit plan. Never again.
War what is it good for you ask? “War means tears
To thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go to fight
And lose their lives” and “War, it ain’t nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker”
republicans drove the country into the ditch like drunk frat boys, obstructed the wrecker and now they want the keys back?
Why would we want to do something stupid like that?
And what Big Bird said. Every darn word! We deserve better.
Flopped liberal policies, see Greece as Exhibit A (next year Spain and Portugal. Cuba, Venuzeula, the list goes on.) What you are seeing there is the natural result of government growing too big, promising too many things, taxing too much. This is the definition of liberal governance.
Want an example closer to home? The entire Obama administration. (See Jimmy Carter, part deux) He has ruined our economy and made us an international laughingstock.
Closer still? Alabama’s public school educational system. Democrats have controlled it for ever through Paul Hubbert, AEA and a majority in the Alabama legislature and our schools are on life suport. (Of course there are some GREAT schools, teachers, and students but they are making heroic efforts in spite of, not because of, the AEA crowd.)
All we ever hear is the need for more money, then we find out that millions are going in the pocket of Democratic cronies like Roy Johnson or Suzanne Schmit–that is until Bradley Burne turned on the basement light and saw all the cockroaches running for cover.
Remember Suzanne Schmidt, Redeye, $170,000 for an education job she never showed up for,
http://www.flashpointblog.com/2008/02/01/alabama-state-rep-sue-schmitz-arrested/
How about Roy Johnson, taking 18 million from the education budget for himself, http://www.wsfa.com/Global/story.asp?S=7771338
Need I go on, Redeye, or have you had enough?
I have friends who have been to Iraq, Afghanistan and some are there now. Millions upon millions of these people have a chance for freedom because of, yes, war. Sadaam and the Taliban were not simply going to go away without a fight.
Your world sounds nice, Redeye, everyone gets along, shares their toys, plays well with others, sings Kumbayah at recess–unfortunately, however, your world is not the real world.
What liberal flops in the United States of America Mr. Conserv? Be specific. Tax and spend is better than the republican policy of borrow and spend.
How has President Obama ruined our economy and made us an international laughing stock? You must have President Obama confused with George W. Bush who raided the surplus to give his rich cronies and tax cut and invaded a country based on dead wrong intelligence, then dressed up like Top Goon, landed on an aircraft carrier and said Mission Accomplished.
What’s wrong with Alabama Public School system? The University of Alabama and Auburn are full of Alabama public school students. Paul Hubbard is the President of the Alabama Education Association, he is not the Governor, nor is he a member of the State Department of Education or the School Board. If you can read this thank the AEA crowd.
Millions are going into the pockets of Roy Johnson and Sue Schmidtz? Says who? And yes Sue Schmidtz was convicted for not showing up to work. Ain’t that a dip?
Millions have a chance for freedom because of war and Saddam and the Taliban were simply not going away without a fight? Has the Taliban gone away yet?
Your words sound real republican Mr. Conserve, you want freedom for Iraq but not for America, all war all the time and debt as far as they eye can see and you say my world is not the real world?
Huh?
O.k., O.k., Redeye, you win. I give up. Clearly in you I have met my superior in every way. Eventually you would wear me down. You knew that, didn’t you?.
Sign me up. I am ready to become a liberal Democrat just like you. Goverment cannot be too big and cannot tax too much. I want them involved in every aspect of my life. As long as I can fit in the wagon, I really don’t care how many people are pushing it.
Obama? Best. President. Ever. He’s a genius. Just hearing him say, “Yes we can!” gets my motor running. Forget the stock market. Business climiate schminess climate. Who needs free enterprise when we have Dear Leader? HE will always know (and do) what is best for us (even if it kills us).
Schools in Alabama? I say let the unions run them. I say let’s pardon Roy Johnson and put him back on the payroll, what’s $18 million dollars in the big scheme of things anyway? Suzanne Schmidt–heck, what’s the big deal about not showing up for work? I also say teachers who commit crimes against children SHOULD stay on the government dole–none of your beeswax you pesky Republicans!
And, the rest of the world, let them eat cake if they ain’t good enough to be Americans! Sadam might have enslaved, tortured or killed millions but he never sold a nuclear bomb to terrorists to set off in America (at least not yet). So what if he paid the families of terrorist who sent suicide-bomber offspring to Israel and gave safe haven to known terrorist. Why mess with him? Same with the Taliban.
And, don’t get me started on Reagan. Why he thought he could tell the Communists what to do with their country? Tear down this wall? Who did he think he was. The gall!
And I’m naming my next child, Jimmy Carter after my new favorite resident. He might have taken American to hell in a handbasket, but, hey, his heart was right! Isn’t that all that matters?
From now on, call Mr. Liberal!
Danny, I hear you are wrong about Giles Perkins not going up. Apparently he’s up with a pretty big buy all over the state.
Is up, saw the ad earlier. One thing that it interesting about Democrats like Perkins, they clearly don’t want to be called Democrats. Perkins ad never mentions party affiliation. Now, in a general, I get that but this is a primary where voters need to know which ballot has you on it so they can vote for you!
Just strikes me as funny, guess they are counting on the same ole Dems showing up to the polls, or being bussed to the polls.
Especially since he was the ED for the Dem party. This guy is no democrat. He’s a DEMOCRAT!
Yes, jpo, you are correct. Thank you. I have updated the comment under Perkins’ name.
Taze Shepard is the only candidate that can beat Parker Griffith in November… Republicans will eat Steve Raby for breakfast with all of his scandalous lobbying, gaming, and Langford shenanigans… he’s got way too much baggage!
To Ben-
What “scandal” has Raby been a part of? What gaming client has he represented? If I were Taze, I wouldn’t want to talk scandals. That might get real touchy. Go back and read the press clippings of the race where Mary Jane Caylor beat him.
Danny,
It would appear that Jo Bonner is taking this fight lying down. We have County Commission Candidates with more signs than Jo. Infact, I’ve seen municipal elections with greater excitement. From my perspective it would appear there are two potential reasons for this. The first being that Jo has seen your line and is betting the house that you’re right and that his oppenents don’t stand a chance regardless of his lack of campaigning. The second is that Jo is tired of being in congress and doesn’t want to be reelected. Either way your odds on the 1st district again seem rather off.
I’m not sure who your political advisors are, but I get the sneaking suspicion its the same old guard that predicted McKinney would be our state senator in District 32. Those who float outside the political hub bub of Montgomery seem to have their finger a little closer to the pulse of the voting public. Then again I could look like a total fool come Tuesday.
Mr. Conservative & RedEye – great read on bias party history! But, as we have learned here, both parties suck when it comes to being drunk on power and spending i.e. to defend either party straight down the party line is what is wrong with this Country.
Either of you are welcome to attack me civilly on my independent party line stance – oh wait, there’s not one.
