James Anderson Ad Makes His Case for AG

James Anderson gives us the first TV ad of the season from any Democratic candidate for AG. The spot, called “A Better Idea,” starts running today in all markets.

Anderson faces Michel Nicrosi and Giles Perkins in the Democratic primary. Incumbent Troy King and Luther Strange are competing in the Republican primary.

    That’s hysterical!

Nice. A good send up of almost all political ads to date and a catchy slogan.

Isn’t that Joe Reed’s son in the ad? Looks like Anderson is more of a politician than he admits…

  • Common Sense

anyone else get sound but no video?

  • JJ

Good Ad! I like that he makes fun of all the others that use guns..Nascar..etc.

  • Carolyn

I must admit – awesome ad!

  • Anonymous Lucy

Yes that is Steve Reed – Joe Reed’s son. Did anybody recognize any of the other characters?

  • Jack H

Brilliant! It will stand out. Likable guy.

  • SamfordDem

That’s a great parody of just about every other ad that’s come out. It will be interesting to see how effective it is as an ad in and of itself.

  • Roy

Great ad for a great candidate. Bring on Big Luther (or that other guy)!

  • anon

    Very well done.

  • Lyle

If James were only a Republican, he’d have my vote.

  • Marcus

Great Ad! I like it. Funny though how someone named “Anonymous” of all things wants to point out whose son is in the ad as if that means something…heck I think he’s a lawyer too so he probably knows another REAL ATTORNEY!

  • Best ad of the year without a doubt.

  • Mgm Insider

Gets better the more you watch it. Had to pick my jaw out of my lap after first viewing — not your typical David Brown ad. Nevertheless, very effective.

    Lightning bolt — WHAMMM!

James had great ads when he ran for Supreme Court, probably the best of that cycle. Still, he lost because of the “D” behind his name.

For James to have any shot this time, King has to win the nomination. Then, James has to hope all of the disillusioned GOP voters either vote for him or write someone else in.

  • Mgm Insider

Disagree, Ron. As I’ve said elsewhere, James lost 02 because he was taking on the BCA darling, Harold See, who was funded to the hilt. It had less to do with the “D” than the context.

I think the same rule applies here. The “D” will matter less than the context of the race, which is why James has a strong shot against TK, as you mentioned. I do think, however, that he will have a decent shot against Luther, given that a lot of resources will loosen up for him with TK out. Luther’s vunerabilities are the same as in 06. He’s a political insider who has little courtroom experience. Same complaint folks have had with TK since he was appointed.

It makes me laugh but then I watched it again and it actually had some real info on the guy. I am certainly tired of seeing everyone with a gun wearing hunting clothes.

  • STAND UP FOR BAMA

That is a GREAT ad. Wonder if he will be able to stay up on TV until June?

Mgm Insider: I beg to differ on your ‘02 take. If we’ve learned anything in statewide judicial elections in Alabama over the past few years, it’s the initial behind a candidate’s name. The same was true for James back in ‘02.

As for this year, the only way Dems win statewide, assuming the political climate stays the same, will be if the GOP nominates a very weak candidate (i.e. potentially in the Lt. Gov. race) or the GOP candidate stumbles (i.e. King’s gambling stance). Otherwise, November 2 will be a tough day for the donkey side.

  • L-Diggy

I agree with Ron. But if there is one weak spot in the GOP, it’s the AG candidates. Troy’s secrets will come out, and Luther is just a DC lobbyist.

Although… Ivey has problems (not just with booze) but with losing $400 million.

GREAT AD!It is about time someone laid out the truth instead of trying to see how mean they can look. Other than Welfare and Medicade fraud the AG’s Office has tried about 5 criminal cases in the last few years ( and most of those were where the local DA asked for help). The current AG has NEVER tried a case of any kind, not even in small claims court and should have discovered the Jr. College mess right under his nose and cleaned up the mess in B’ham instead of turning over law enforcement in this state to the feds. Someone should ask why one person seeking this office got blackballed by the US Senate for the US Attorney’s job in Montgomery and in 4 years of private practice has never appeared in an Alabama court. It is about time we had somebody in that office who could find a courthouse instead of a press conference and is a REAL lawyer.

No question. The pick of this season’s litter in political spots. Humor is not easy to do, but when done well, is tremendously effective in political spots. This is well done.

  • DC

Great ad. He has actually tried a case. I will vote for Strange or Anderson.

Be Careful What You Ask For

Alabama just finished one of the bizarre primary election cycles in recent memory. I mean really, who would have ever thought 12 months ago that Ron Sparks and Robert Bentley would have been facing off against one another for the big prize? Both men are personal friends but I think even they had to [...]

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
