GOP gubernatorial candidate Robert Bentley has a second commercial online and on TV.
In it, I count what sounds like a couple of folksy pokes at fellow GOP candidate Bradley Byrne.
http://www.politicalparlor.net/docs/video/RobertBentleyAd_March2010.flvA quibble… the ad gives credit to Bentley for authoring and passing the Alabama Reemployment Act of 2010, implying that the bill has been enacted into law (so giving him “a proven record of putting Alabama back to work”) when actually the bill has passed only the House. It’s not yet a bill that has put Alabamians back to work.
Update: I edited the post to indicate that the ad is indeed on television.

I liked the first one better, but this is an obvious case for legislative achievement. While I think you have somewhat of a point on the overstating of the cited legislation, he can’t really control what the Senate does. He should be able to take some credit for things passing that are somewhat within his control.
“We all like to hunt and fish” is obviously a slight dig at Byrne. So good for Bentley. As to claiming the 5,000 jobs, would give him a pass. He did engineer the bill through the House. Will it ever create 5,000 jobs? Probably not. But then its rare that one of the governor’s job announcements ever lives up to its billing either.
Of the Repubs, I think Bentley’s ads are the most effective. Better than Kay talking about the “liberal” Mobile paper, better than Tim saying he is for “common sense” (whatever that is) and better than Bradley telling us he will take on Washington.
I’m guessing that Bentley may be gaining some traction. He comes across on TV as the most believeable. Would like to see him make the runoff.
Good ad, but not as good as the first. Bentley’s established himself as the obvious challenger to Byrne for the “BCA vote” in the GOP primary. It’s down to Byrne, James and Bentley now. Kay may drop out at any time as she runs out of money. Johnson never had any real chance, and Moore is fading – he finished fourth in the Jeff Co straw poll.
I am not impressed with this commercial either. I want to know if he is forgoing his current state pay since our unemployment rates are so high? He claims he will give up state pay once he is governor. If this idea is so novel to him, is he currently giving up pay for being a representative? I think the man is full of rhetoric, and he certainly does not deserve to make the run-off.
Mr. Bentley seems not to be for a the little people. I have e-mailed him over a week ago asking some simple questions and I have yet to hear back from him or his campaign staff in any shape form or fashion. Am I not important enough for his time but yet he expects me to vote blindly for him without knowing these answers? I am seeking a candidate, for governor, to see who is worthy of my family and friend’s vote. As of right now Mr. Bentley has two strikes against him. Remember three strikes your out. He can remove one strike by simply answering my questions on my e-mail if I agree with his answers. He did answer one of these questions in this ad, but what about the other 9? Could he be avoiding one or more of the 9? I have some strongly debated issues on there as well as a questionalbe one about his campaign records. I am a Southern Baptist also and I was a Sunday School teacher, (going to a different church now) but does that mean that you automatically support my views and I yours? I could help pull in some votes for whom ever I decide to support, but I won’t work for someone who won’t answer my e-mails back with even an acknowledgement that they received it. I am getting tired of elected offices that forget who they work for and I am working to vote them out one by one or keeping them from getting elected all together if I see a pattern during election. I want my government back. I want a government that actually cares about me and the issues I face and vote accordingly and listens to me! Yes I am aware that Mr. Bentley’s special interest group is his doctor friends, but I was hoping that just may be he had normal Alabamaians (the other special interest group that everyone ignores)at heart as well. By the way….we do have connections to the health care field…but don’t let the influence your decision to answer my e-mail and don’t expect my support just because we have a things in common.
As others have said, not as good as the first ad. I suspect he will go negative and I hate to see it from Bentley, who I otherwise like.
2010, You are right. Bentley (& Ivey) have to path left except negative — they cannot break beyond 10% although their favorables I suspect are quite healthy. Race is too crowded.
And unless James gets his act together post haste, he will not have a choice beyond negativity either — but he will have the $$$ to do it rather well I suspect.
Bentley is a nice enough man.
But Bentley voted for Amendment 1 the largest tax hike in Alabama’s history like Byrne did. (Strike 1)
Bentley has spent his entire legislative term under the thumb of AEA (his past campaign donations from A-Vote and pro-AEA voting record like killing Charter Schools are proof). (Strike 2)
Bentley is a big talker. But in actuality, he has no real record of legislative achievement to show for his two terms in office. Bentley’s jobs bill is only a bill. Until the senate passes it and the governor signs it, he can’t honestly claim he’s a proven job creator. In fact it’s so untruthful and misleading that it reminds me of Byrne fraudulently claiming he “cut” “70″ million dollars out of the 2 year system. And Bentley sold out Pro-Lifers with exceptions to abortion in his abortion bill because he claimed it would make the bill easier to pass and it did no such thing. (Strike 3)
The stunt of not taking a salary is just that: a cheap stunt. If he really had any sincerity about identifying with the unemployed, he would be refusing his legislative pay right now. A rich doctor doesn’t need $50,000 like unemployed moms and dads do.
His ads are average at best, but not enough to gloss over the serious flaws of his candidacy.
[...] at Political Parlor noted over the weekend the perhaps not-so-subtle swipe at Byrne in Bentley’s “One [...]
Trust him – he’s a DOCTOR!
If Bentley was a psychiatrist he could have Roy Moore committed, thus making his chances better . . .come to think of it, he could ALSO have Krazy Kay committed . . . .
I think these are the best ads of the cycle so far. I won’t be voting for Bentley but he looks like a legitimate contender. I wonder when Ron Sparks gets on the air.
Impressive ad! Good man! and I am a Tim James supporter–but Robert Bentley is a fine, fine man!
the best ad AEA can buy!
I like both ads. He is the best candidate. He is my first choice, then james and then Moore.
wonder what Rep. DuWayne Bridges thinks about this:
“the ad gives credit to Bentley for authoring and passing the Alabama Reemployment Act of 2010″

Watching Bentley is like watching Elmer’s Glue dry
Look a new Bradley Byrne ad! http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/6261861/
I’m excited for the Primary.
I sure hope Byrne does not get the nomination. I can’t vote for him b/c he flip flopped on the Bible. You can’t say something like he did about the bible not being literally true and then say it is. If you are christian you need to vote for any of the other candidates.
There is also the little problem of Byrne being a flat out RINO.
Electing Byrne will be a de facto act of giving the Democrats the governorship.
And get ready for the record tax increase.
Bentley is a shill for the AEA. There is a reason why this ad attacks Byrne – he’s the frontrunner and the candidate AEA LEAST wants to win. Don’t you James and Moore supporters wonder why the Democratic establishment isn’t going after your candidate? I don’t.
“I’m Dr. Bentley, and I have diagnosed Bradley Byrne with terminal Democratitis!”
princeliberty – go put together more roy moore signs and stop rattling off your nonsense.
The Democrat establishment is not going after Byrne. And there is nobody the Democrats would rather loose to than Byrne. Byrne at heart is one of them.
The next Governor will face a huge budget problem – the worst in the modern history of Alabama. Byrne record shows how he thinks a budget whole should be fixed – a record tax increase and keep the spending protected.
The only real solution to budget problem will taking on the state employees union and the AEA so the number of state workers can be cut and their compensations adjusted to a level the state can afford over the long run.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Hubbert
Pretty clear that Paul Hubbert = the Democratic establishment. Hubbert is going after Byrne like there is no tomorrow. Now the real question is why he’s not going after the others. My guess is that he figures several of them are unelectable (and therefore not worth his time or money) and the others have already been paid off.
prince – apparently you have no idea which candidate has actually taken on the AEA and won….repeatedly. Byrne. We all know you dislike him, but facts are facts. So when you cite AEA as the problem, the solution is Byrne. As Carolyn stated, AEA is going after Byrne at all costs. And why? Because he has knocked heads with them many times…and won.
2010 – will you list the times Byrne knocked heads with AEA and won? The only things I remember is his handling of various employees at the 2 year colleges where they sued him and he lost. And don’t tell me about the double dippers because the US Attorney was the one who prosecuted them.
2010 I am also very interested in the “many times” Byrne beat AEA.
Byrne was for AEA before he was against them. He taken money from Hubbert before. His fight with Hubbert was and is a bunch of hot air designed to make him governor.
He does not has the convictions or the guts to engage in all out war to reform state government and defeat the AEA and the state employees union.
He will take the easy way out and cut a deal which will be a record tax increase.
No, I think Bradley Byrne has guts; he was brave enough to put his children in a commercial with speaking parts – making them eligible for the mud. Look out for the misplaced speeding ticket or the ex-boyfriend or girlfriend who are vindictive of the Byrne children.
Bradley Byrne – Brave enough to be Governor.
Putting your kids in a commerical is an act of courage?! Many many men and women before Byrne have put the kids in and proven themselves to be cowards. So that line is already proven false.
We need to be discussing the health care bill. The issue is coming to the Governor’s race. Who will truly stand up and fight the federal government’s power grab?
Best commercial I have seen.
