HD 9 Race Filling Out?

HD - 09The Parlor is hearing that Democrats in Morgan County are pleased that long-time Couny License Commissioner Sue Baker Roan is “99% sure” she’ll run for the House District 9 seat being vacated by Democrat Ron Grantland.

Ed Henry and Dwight Tankersly are announced GOP candidates for the seat.

Is she 99% sure or 99 years old?

This is a loss for Democrats. Next. Take a look at the landscape boys, GOP will flip this house. Hope Turnham has his resume ready.

Can’t the Democrats run anyone younger than 70 for the Legislature in Morgan County? They ran 70-something year old Bobby Day against Arthur Orr for an open seat four years ago, and now they are running Methuselah’s mother for Grantland’s open seat. Didn’t work in ‘06, and it ain’t going to work now. Oh, I almost forgot Bill Dukes, who is 80-something and apparently forgot he retired.

70? Your at least 10 years off. Try 80

  • I think Sue is the only elected democrat left in a county office in Morgan. But I would caution you guys about her age. Sure she’s as old as the hills but you do remember what happened when her GOP opponent brought her age up last time don’t you?

This is definitely a sign that the Democrats are struggling to find top-tier candidates around the state. Another easy win for the GOP.

Remember the last time the Republicans made fun of her age? Sue Baker Roan carried 58% of the vote to beat Republican Mark McCurry. People know Sue Baker Roan. She is well liked in the county and people know her, which is what wins votes.

Sue was the only Democrat to win in Morgan County. I like he personally but she couldn’t have beaten an enthusiastic candidate. The winds of change are blowing and the people are tired of politics as usual. Sue is a career Politician and on the wrong ticket.

The Republicans also made fun of Bobby Day’s age. He carried 38% of the vote losing to Arthur Orr.

The Republican Candidate make a lot of difference.

If Bill Dukes’s mental state is any sign of the effect of age on a Legislator, we should only elect 21 year olds.

  • Sad

It is sad that the Democrats are running 80 year old candidates in these races. Not making fun of her age, but gracious alive let’s not convince the elderly to get into these races when they are only going to be able to serve for a very short period, and I use the word serve loosely.

Bobby Day lost because his campaign was terribly run and Orr had the money. With Sue it’s different. She is possibly the most well liked politician in the County and that could be enough to beat the mayor of Hartselle, who’s not well known outside of the city limits.

  • JD

Bobby Day had a half MILLION dollars to campaign with. $400,000 from one source Tenn Valley PAC. Money wasn’t the problem, message was.

Tue, I would say that Bobby’s campaign leaders, ie Steve Raby, lost that race before I would say Arthur won.

  • JD

If all this Arthur Orr didn’t, win Bobby Day lost is true, maybe Sue Roan should be running against Arthur Orr, since it would be such an easy Democrat pickup.

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
