Luther Strange Super Bowl Ad

Here is an early peek at the campaign ad that Luther Strange will air on the CBS affiliates in Montgomery and Dothan during the Super Bowl tomorrow.

Strange is running in the Republican primary for Attorney General against incumbent Troy King.

  • I wasn’t sure I wanted to vote for him until I learned that he was a Merchant Marine and that he’d “stand up to Washington.” That’s a quality use of funds.

  • Amanda

That is a man I can trust to go to Montgomery and just do his job and enforce the law. I am so tired of career politicians that get caught up in their egos and power.

  • Politix

Stephen – you know the Attorney General has a lot to do with Washington. Especially former Washington Lobbyist Luther Strange!

  • Amanda

I support anyone who supports law enforcement and the district attorneys. If Luther can be effective with DC then maybe he can help the local law enforcement agencies secure more resources and better equipment to do their job with. I bet any local law enforcement agency would appreciate all the help they can get from the Luther as the AG securing them more resources from DC. He already has a head start with Alabama’s US Senator endorsements!

  • BIllT

I’m tired of Governor Riley not having the support of the Attorney General while illegally raiding private businesses. Big Luther will tow the party line and go after Democrats with or without the rule of law.

  • Taxpayer

I am tired of Troy King as the Attorney General (supposedly top law enforcement officer in the State) not enforcing the law and giving his friends a hall pass on obeying the law. If the AG had not conflicted himself out of this gambling mess by becoming best buds with the gambling hall owners then maybe he would have been able to look at this situation from an unbias position and act on behalf of his clients (ie. the taxpayers). Speaking of conflicts didn’t Troy King also have to pull out from the 2year college corruption case because he-himself asked for favors from the 2-year college chancellor?

  • BamaFan

Luther is exactly what we need in the AG’s office. The current AG is an embarrassment to the state of Alabama. Washington is violating the 10th amendment and he is the man to defend us!

  • ivan swift

strange says he’ll “stand up to washington.” the poor guy doesnt know what he’s running for. aint got nothing to do with washington — atty gen is supposed to enforce the laws of alabamA. WAIT — Now i get it — he’s trying to get the inflmaed vote, not the informed vote, on his side. luther’s ad says he was a “merchant marine.” a merchant marine is a nation’s entire maritime industry. it aint one man. poor guy, he worked on a ship and it made him the entire nation’s maritime shipping industry.

  • Dan

Taxpayer, you nailed it regarding a couple of King’s many conflicts of interest.

At a time we really needed the help of the AG in cleaning up the two-year college mess, he pulls a dumb-ass stunt with trying to get a bogus job for a friend. When he was “exposed”, he had to hand the whole corruption investigation over to a D.A.

Luther Strange is the man for the job. Hands down.

  • Lyn Johnson

As I recall Troy King is standing up to Australia and wasting energy on other PR ventures. Until King got to be AG, I can only find 3 cases with his name associated. We need a real lawyer and not a politician.

  • Roy

Which is it that we want: An AG who will “stand up to Washington” (whatever the hell that means) or an AG who will help Alabama law enforcement secure more resources from the federal government? Is Luther just taking his lead from Riley who condemns the federal stimulus money while depending on it to balance his budget? Typical pandering drivel.

  • The Other McCain blog raises the question of why every GOP politician in Alabama is running away from Troy King. It’s a multiple choice question: federal grand jury? relationships with gambling lobbyists? overpaid staffers in the AG’s office?. A sorry story but a funny post: theothermccain.com

  • I won’t defend Troy King, but this ad is a gross misuse of campaign funds. Whoever he is paying that came up with this idea needs to be fired and if it was him, he might actually be an intellectual invalid like Troy King, so why swap?

  • Anonymous

So a paid lobbyist isn’t going to have any conflicts of interest? Interesting idea. Be clear – Luther is a lobbyist not a practicing attorney. As far as standing up to the federal government, I would be interested in exactly Luther would do that our current AG isn’t already doing? Troy has filed a number of amicus briefs which have sought to defend a robust federalism.

As far as enforcing the law, it is funny how so many who call themselves conservative and decry activist liberal judges who implement their own personal preferences instead of what the law requires are now mad because the Attorney General wouldn’t put aside what he believed the law required and simply enforced what he thought the law ought to be. Now the Supreme Court may ultimately disagree with the Attorney General’s opinions but that doesn’t change the fact that the position the Attorney General has taken is the more conservative position. And before anyone says that the Attorney General’s position is not tenable I suggest you consider that some bank had to have lent the money that built the hotel at Victory Land and I suspect that before the bank lent the money that it wanted more than the Attorney General’s opinion which meant that somewhere there were well-paid attorneys who also thought the operations were legal.

Good grief – what a pathetic commercial. No wonder 4 independent polls show King beating Luther by an average of 20 percentage points. For all you Lutherites posting on this page – your guy is as boring as he is tall. If that’s the best Luther can do, he will be lucky not to be totally humiliated like Mark Montiel who lost to King in the 2006 Republican primary, 75% – 25%. I never thought there could be a bigger political joke than Montiel, but stay tuned.

  • loyal independent

This is a total waste of money.

  • anonimus

Ok, this ad isn’t great. Ho hum at best, but maybe those outside of this close circle will like it, who knows. Larger issue being discussed here: not sure the “he’s a lobbyist” line will work, not sure “troy’s been ignoring the law” will work either. Think it comes down to trust among the GOP rank and file. Hard to get a handle on who has that momentum.

However, Luther is not Mark Montiel, he’s a lot sharper (and so is Troy btw), so this race is going to be close.

  • Billy

Look no one who reads this blog would say things like “this is who we need” or “I can trust him”. This is a blog for insiders, most of whom think Luther spending money on a super bowl spot, which will air at a “I gotta get a beer” moment is a huge waste of money. At this point I would say that Luther needs to hire a real consultant and get rid of his former bama cheerleader/sga president. Troy is raising a lot of money (no one cares from where). He is going to have a lot more success since Riley have started tumbling in his polling numbers. I’d say Danny needs to flip his odds right about now and stay ahead of the betting public.

  • Don

The GOP wants a change in the AG’s office. I don’t know how much more clear they can be. King never really did respect his colleagues in the private sector. So all I can say is come January 2011… welcome to private practice of law Mr. King. Let’s try some real cases.

  • Bobby Jean

While the cost spent on the Super Bowl add is probably overly priced, it is reaffirming to finally see some movement on behalf of the Strange Campaign. At the end of the day, they cannot continue to rely on the mistakes made by the incumbent Attorney General. The Strange campaign is in need of true direction. If they want to be able to achieve their mission, it’s time for the average Alabamian to see what Mr. Strange has to offer.

  • 2010

Troy King verges on incompetency and is biased beyond belief. Luther would be a drastic improvement. All you guys that don’t get the “stand up to Washington” argument must not be paying attention to the 10th Amendment issues that are developing and the legal action that was mounting from several states AGs concerning health care. Luckily, with Scott Brown being elected, we may not have to worry about such. But that being said, there is a growing concern about federal authority over the states reaching a level that Governors and Attorney Generals will file legal challenges to protect the sovereign rights of states.

  • anonymous56

All of that said 2010, you still rely on the voters being that in touch, still don’t think they are, which means whoever is to win this race has to hit harder than this ad, has to really show a contrast. Don’t see either candidate hammering on that contrast.

  • ivan swift

how many politically attuned people who refer adoringly to mass repub senator scott brown know that in the state senate he voted for the so-called (not by me) “socialistic” govt run health care plan for mass residents?

  • Thomas

The fact Strange is on the air so early indicates he’s not where he hoped to be in the polls. The same thing applies to Byrne’s early appearances on TV ads.

  • Goat Hill

Big Luther was trained in Washington, D.C. Been a lobbiest up there for years! He’s just what we need! NOT!

  • little luther

Luther is the elite, upper class republican’s hand picked, country club, white bread pawn!!!! Just like Bradley Byrne!!!

A challenger being ads before the incumbent makes sense if they can afford it. And Strange has the money to run early ads.

Byrne’s in an open race and having running ads before anyone else is sign of weakness is that case. Plus, Byrne’s going to try to win the race with ads.

  • Reply to Ivan Swift (or not so) – merchant marine refers to both the fleet and the personnel who serve. Whatever the name, it sounds like a real dirt-under-the-fingernails job to me.

  • Awful

That tv advertisement was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I don’t care if they got it for 10 cents. Until it was half way through I didn’t even know what it was because it was so fuzzy. I’m not saying he won or lost the race because of that ad, BUT if it was about that ad he definitely lost. You might not like Troy King and you might think his is too conservative or too liberal but he is a good politician and has good people. They will not make mistakes so you better get your game on big luther! Here’s a WHODAT to the nation too!

  • patrick

This is not impressive ad. Between this ad and Bryne’s last one the bar has been set low at this point in the 2010 season.

  • Fo-fiver

I’m still trying to figure out how Luther became an Eagle Scout by age 13. I suspect chicanery and deception in the dispensation of merit badges. I was 16 before I became an Eagle Scout. He is clearly a radical over achiever. We need someone much more average as attorney general.
