Republican Jay Dill Suspends Campaign; Endorses K.L. Brown as House District 40 Republican Nominee

Jacksonville, Al – Republican Jay Dill announced at a morning press conference that he has officially suspended his campaign in the Special Election for House District 40 and pledged his support to K.L. Brown as the nominee for the Alabama Republican Party.

On February 16, a General Election will be held to fill the seat which became vacant following the death of Rep. Lea Fite.

At the press conference, Dill vowed his full and complete support for Brown, and in doing so fulfilled his campaign promise of being a fiscal conservative.

“My campaign platform called for a reduction in state spending and waste,” Dill said. “By moving the General Election to February 16th, we eliminate the need for a runoff election that would cost our state and county thousands of dollars – dollars that we can now put towards other initiatives like job creation and programs to enhance education.”

“It is critical that we have a conservative representative for our district in the Alabama Legislature and I intend to work hard for K.L. in the General Election, and urge all of my supporters to rally behind him as well.”

In the Republican Primary held last Tuesday, K.L. Brown was the top vote-getter with over 46% of the vote. Today, he thanked Jay Dill and the people of House District 40 for supporting him as the nominee.

“I am humbled to have received such support from the community, and am truly grateful for Jay’s willingness to join our campaign,” Brown said. “My campaign remains committed to fighting for the hardworking families in our community, to bringing more jobs and opportunity to those families and to ensuring the best education for our children.

“I proudly accept the Republican nomination for House District 40,” Brown continued. “Our campaign is energized and we will show the voters that I am the true conservative in this race.”

Jay Dill’s decision to avoid a runoff and support Brown as the Republican nominee in House District 40 allows the Alabama Republican Party a chance to begin building support for Brown. Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party expressed his gratitude to Dill and his excitement for the Party’s chances of picking up this seat.

“Jay Dill’s willingness to suspend his campaign, avoid a potentially costly runoff and support K.L. Brown in this race shows that he is a selfless person, who puts the people of this district, and our Party, above personal politics,” Hubbard said.

“Today’s announcement also proves that our Party is united in our efforts to win this seat,” Hubbard continued. “While we firmly believe that both K.L and Jay would be outstanding representatives and public servants, we also understand there can only be one nominee. Now, the Alabama Republican Party is fully prepared to partner with the Brown Campaign and work to ensure victory for the only conservative left in the race on February 16th.”

Good move by Dill. Glad to see someone willing to put their personal pride and ego to the side in order to advance the goal of switching this from a Democrat to a Republican seat.

I was hoping for a Dill victory, but by doing this Dill has shown his true character as a team player. An extended primary battle would have done nothing but give Whaley more time to collect AEA money and cause the Republicans to deplete their accounts. Good job Jay Dill and good luck to you in your future political campaigns.

Kudos to Dill for stepping aside and seeing the bigger picture.

This definitely opens up the race. Don’t know much about Ricky Whaley but hear that Brown is well known. Just searching a little it looks like Whaley’s running a Jenny Askins type race. That didn’t end up so well for teh Democatic Party

Congratulations to Dill for running a good race. This selfless act has boosted his reputation, I hope he runs for public again soon.

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
