Who Will Challenge Figures in SD 33?

SD 33Thanks to Chip Drago of the Mobile Bay Times, we have some brand spankin’ new names on the 2010 Senate Elections Directory in Senate District 33. Vivian Figures is the Democratic incumbent. She also was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in the 2008 race against Jeff Sessions. According to Drago, several Dems and at least one Republican are considering challenging Figures.

Most interesting among them is former judge Herman Thomas who was recently acquitted of all charges related to accusations that he paddled inmates. Figures’ son Akil testified in court that he received leniency on drug-related convictions in return for allowing Thomas to paddle him. Vivian Figures also testified against Thomas in the trial.

According to Drago, Mobile city councilor William Carroll (D), Mobile County computer data chief Victor Crawford (D), and Baptist minister Walter Bracy (R) are also considering running for SD 33. The 2010 Senate list already had Crawford’s name and has been updated with the others.

A lively primary in Mobile’s African American Senate District? More good news for Davis – bad news for Sparks.

I agree with Washington Hogwallop on this one. Add this in with the lively primary in Senate Dis. 28, 23(maybe), and now 33.

Lively primaries and general elections, what makes democracy work.

Herman Thomas would probably get errr, spanked, in this one.

  • Lyn Johnson

Probably hurts Tim James too. He had good support in Mobile County.

Hogwallop: Does this mean that in District 1 that will help Sparks? Sparks will get all the white votes in North Alabama and all he needs is 20-25% of the black vote.

about time somebody took on Figures. she’s very difficult to deal with.

M: There is no serious primary in SD 1. That would help him if it was a competitive race, but its not. Back to the drawing board.

Problem is that Democrats are still running in all different directions in Mobile County. THanks Joe Turnahm. Can’t beat the winning leadership of Jim and Joe!

Bradley Byrne has strong african american support in Mobile County. When he was a democrat, he was close to Vivian’s late husband, Michael.

  • Conserrrrrrrrrrrvo Mannnnnnnnnnn

folsom4ever: What do you mean “when he was a democrat”? He’s never stopped being one. Byrne was/is also very close to Herman Thomas too.

  • Mike

Didn’t Bradley Byrne run Herman Thomas’s campaign?

i think the race to watch will be buisness man rashawn figures running against james buskey. i just found out he figures is pondering running

  • Johnathan

Rashawn Figures would be great for the district. What I’ve heard about him at least he’s visible in the community and doing business there. I am a business man and have see his work and it is remarkable and he could easily take his work to West Mobile and double his money because the property value is low in District 99 especially the Toulminville area. I admire him for iving the people quality homes and allowing them to “now” take pride in their home and community. I mean James Buskey has held the seat since 1976 and has not been challenged in 26 years I mean are you kidding me!!! If the people of District 99 doesn’t realize there is a problem and the “deserve” better, my hats are off to Mr. Figures at least he does!!

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
