A reader writes in email:
I am a little ticked at Kay Ivey for blasting Parker Griffith. Someone needs to remind her that she was a Democrat and ran for Auditor in 1982 as a Democrat. Glass houses….
My personal feeling as a lifelong Republican is that I can understand why some Republicans are mad about Parker. But if we went after every Party-switcher who has joined the GOP, we wouldn’t have too many southern Republicans in elective office.
Richard Shelby, anyone?
You can see the full statement from state Treasurer Kay Ivey on Parker Griffith’s party switch here.

I don’t know, Kay Ivey, “You may be right”
Just “don’t ask me why”
Ivey expressed the feelings of many in North Alabama who are loyal Republicans who are not happy that Griffin is being embraced by the party leadership without bothering to examine his credentials. Hard to imagine a converted RINO!
Too bad Kay Ivey didn’t succeed in 1982 (Flashback: Jan Cook becomes Alabama’s youngest auditor). Now we can’t get rid of her – maybe the Republican 2010 wave will wipe her out of office.
Don’t forget Ronald Reagan.
shelby either…. welcome to the party Parker.
Shelby was actually voting as a conservative when he changed parties.
He just kept on voting the same as before.
Ivey’s ran in 1982 as a Democrat, because the GOP was virtually non-existent in Alabama then. Remember Crazy Emory Folmar ran in 1982 and was wiped off the map by Wallace.
It depends on the reason why a person switches. If it’s due to personal conviction, that’s fine. If it’s due for political preservation, then it’s not fine.
And don’t forget Senator Shelby switched parties the day after the 1994 elections. He was not doing it because he was scared he wasn’t going to be re-elected in 11 months like Dr. Griffith. What a sham!
This person nails it on the head when he/she notes that, “if we went after every Party-switcher who has joined the GOP, we wouldn’t have too many southern Republicans in elective office.” Take just about any current southern Republican politician over 50, and he or she was most likely a Democrat back in the day, when being a Democrat was the thing to be in Alabama. Heck, even Roy Moore was a Democrat prior to the late 80s. If someone wants to come to the Republican Party, I say, it would be stupid not to welcome them with open arms.
I think Bobly Byrne is the one who emailed Danny crying about Kay Ivy. Bobly loves Griffin and higher taxes, two birds of a feather. As for welcoming people as republicans: sure we can welcome the Johnny come latelys. Don’t mean we got to elect them to republican office though. What a pathetic move by Griffin. Go Mo! We need mo Mo.
Last time the GOP played with a Democrat changed to GOP it bit them. Sen. Harri Anne Smith anyone????? The best friend of Dem. Congressman Bobby Bright.
