Gubernatorial hopeful Artur Davis is one of four featured speakers at the Democratic Governors’ Association Candidate Luncheon today in Washington. The other three are Tom Barrett of Wisconsin, Diane Denish of New Mexico, and Alex Sink of Florida.
The DGA appears to be taking notice of the Alabama gubernatorial race and Davis’ candidacy. Not a promising sign for Davis’ Democratic rival Ron Sparks that states like Minnesota, Maine, and Oklahoma – but not Alabama – had multiple gubernatorial candidates invited and in attendance.

[...] Danny points out that several states had more than one candidate in attendance…but no Ron Sparks. GD Star [...]
They probably believe that Sparks’ 30 point lag in recent polls is a sure sign they shouldn’t waste their time/money on him.
Poor Ole Ronnie! Guess he’ll have to get on ALFA’s payroll! Ronnie is way out of his league!
Looks like Artur is on his way to being the Presumptive Nominee. Alabama has needed a Messiah candidate for a while. If only the State Dems had a Convention with elected delegates and super delegates and Joe Reed had to cast the Montgomery County Delegation’s vote for Ron Sparks. Oh well. At least we had the first woman Governor.
it is not surprising that Davis was featured for the very simple reason that he is the only serious black nonincumbent candidate the Dems have this cycle. (the black atty general in Georgia is way behind in Demo polls). It is interesting that Sparks was not invited, though, and shows that he is not given a chance by the Dem establishment in DC. So, an embarassment for Sparks.
The bigger news, the Jones endorsement in Mobile, which seems to have caught the Sparks crowd by surprise. Kind of surprising that Sparks has no high profile black endorsements from legislators or mayors given the rumored dislike some of these officials have for Davis.
The rumored dislike on the part of elected officials is really just Paul Hubbert and Joe Reed. Any don’t we know why they don’t like him. If the best quarterback in the tri-county area moves to town, it might upset the unspoken hierarchy at school – and doesn’t that anger the high school bully? The Hubberts and Reeds of the world are upset that Davis is rocking the equilibrium in the lunchroom.
And if there’s any animosity coming from others not directly influencing the AEA, they are probably either AEA drones or they just wish they had the skills and promise Davis has. If you’ve seen him in action, you know he’s good. The man is smart to boot.
Brian: We didn’t have the first woman governor.
