Tallassee’s landmark Hotel Talisi was destroyed in a fire this morning. Opened in 1928, the buffet in the hotel’s restaurant was promoted in an Alabama Tourism campaign, “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die” (pdf).
StClairCountyAL.com has a fond write-up (”It’s my favorite eating place in all of Alabama.”) on the hotel from last December.

The Hotel Talisi did not burn to the ground. It was severely damaged, probably beyond repair, by a fire that is assumed to have started in or outside the consignment shop across the alley. The shop was completely destroyed, and the hotel lost its roof and suffered heavy damage, but the walls are still standing and some things inside were salvagable.

Thanks, Jennifer. I have corrected the post title. Not sure what I saw, read, or otherwise invented that made me think differently.
The Birmingham News site also has pictures. It’s a sad story.
