I’m intrigued about the stories that the state is prepared to give a $13 million, no bid contract, to a company that has “no Web site, and no listed phone number or e-mail address and one that has personal residences listed for its company addresses in Alabama and in Virginia.” The pending contract amendment with Paragon Source represents a $6.9 million increase on top of a $5.9 million contract awarded to the company last year.

Who’s the principal?
This is beyond weird. It seems like if you were in the running for a contract this big, you could at least spare a few thousand bucks to get a website and phone number up and running. Anyone know how this came about?
so what about it, 2010 ?? not going to defend your boy on this one??? man is this one gonna be a stinker…i look for a gamblin raid to divert attention….
I thought Drayton N, David P, and Maynard Cooper already got the no bid contract to keep tabs on stimulus funds???

She lives in Montgomery and works (with other Paragon employees) out of a state office in the RSA Union Building downtown.
janet or rather ju nay says she don’t need a office..and i figured a google search of such a big money maker would produce a bit more….

Contracts for us… no bids

The contract’s signed by Governor Bob.
Ah but…
One contract’s not enough

So this is a contract extension, not the state giving away a $13M contract as the post implicated.
Why does the contract review committee care so much now after they approved this same contract in the first place? This is an extension of a contract the committee approved.
It looks like selective outrage from democrats to try to get some cover on ethics reform.

I guess that’s the business phone number; it’s a DC metro area code. All you have to do is look hard enough…learn how to use Google Advanced Search and you can do amazing things.
I wonder who the lobbyist is? And why has the Birmingham News not covered this story yet? Hip Hip Hooray for Newhouse Media and their objective reporting.
Are no-bid contracts only news when they involve Don Siegelman?
Hey, I’ve noticed that none of the Riley Fourth Reich versifiers are really weighing in here. Has someone touched a nerve?
What’s the deal? It’s not going away with Alvin spearheading the charge. Maybe he’ll prove useful after all in slaying the mighty Alabama “vast right-wing conspiracy”…
Mr. Jinks wrote,
“So this is a contract extension, not the state giving away a $13M contract as the post implicated.”
Not sure which post you are talking about because this post only has two sentences, and the second one says plain as day, “The pending contract amendment with Paragon Source represents a $6.9 million increase on top of a $5.9 million contract awarded to the company last year.”
:)
Exactly. The two sentences don’t make sense together. The state already gave the contract, so how can it be “prepared to give” a contract. “Prepared to extend” would make more sense to me. Semantics, I know. Smiley face.
2010, your response?
This is why Republicans duck debates and just want to scream at town halls. Truth always makes them uneasy.
Mr. Jinks,
If I comment that Billy is prepared to commit to giving you 10 apples, that is true whether or not Billy had already previously committed to giving you 5 apples, though it’s nice to note that he had already committed to give you 5.
An amended contract is still one contract, and in this case that one contract (not yet given) is a contract worth nearly $13 million. The post is clear that there is already a commitment for about half the money.
By the way, as I understand it, it’s not an extended contract as much as it is an amended contract because as I understand it the nature of the work is a bit different from what was originally specified.
Best,
Danny
Danny,
Based on my exposure to contracts both public and private, I would be forced to agree with you.
Maybe some of you folks (Riley supporters) should take the the blindfolds off and see just how corrupt this administration really is!!! Maybe Bill Johnson is on to something!!
Maybe Bill will be looking for a plea bargain later in life? And the public questioning makes his case for one stronger. He can throw up the, I was just following orders until I left defense. If this goes anywhere.
Is this a Riley signed contract or a Finance Department signed contract?
Thanks, Jeff, for clearing up the phone bit. It makes a lot more sense that a company looking for public contracts worth millions would want potential clients to have to learn how to use Google Advanced Search before they could call.
i really feel we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg on this matter…if riley is “making calls” you know somethings up…can we say CYA mode..
Fair enough, my friend. Just so you know, I’m not particularly fond of many kinds of state contracts, this one included. I just think the timing of the outrage is interesting. Dems need cover on ethics and this is a good way to get it.
Jeff Bridges in comment 11,
Thank you for the tip about Advanced Google Search to find the contact # for Paragon Source. I’m generally no slouch with Google, but I cannot reproduce the search that provides the results you talked about.
Can you tell me what search you used to find the results you mentioned in comment #11 above? Perhaps you could post here or send me the url that is in the browser window from the Google results page.
I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you very much!
I think we need to trust and relax. More articles on fashion and food. Maybe dancing.
Much ado about nothing. #12: Paragon doesn’t have a lobbyist. #21: This is a Finance Dept contract. Always amusing to see the Riley haters jump at a mere whiff of bad news, however legit it may be. Can’t you guys find some way to bring Karl Rove and Billy Canary into this? You’re losing your touch!

I agree.
No bid contracts may be awarded to individuals with highly specialized knowledge or specialized experience. The big problem I have is that the contract relates to expertise in computers. Why would a group with an expertise in computers not have a web presence?
The idea of no bid – is that nobody else can do the job.
Hardly the case.
Let me ask you guys something: if Don Siegelman were governor, and every single one of the other facts of this case were the same, don’t you think the entire GOP would be screaming about this no-bid contract from the rooftops?
of course they would…quite obvious they’d rather spread rumors about troy king….
The finance department is completely self funded. It receives no appropriations. There is no tax money being spent on this contract.
#31 – if this had occurred while Don Siegelman was Gov the folks at Paragon would’ve been shaken down for a contribution to the lottery foundation. No one has produced any info to show there was a political deal here. And #33, the Finance Dept is not self-funded. It is a General Fund agency.
#29 – You state “The big problem I have is that the contract relates to expertise in computers.” And you know this how? From the media? They certainly are unbiased and accurate! I think we should follow the hats and see who is nailing them to fence posts.
#33 & #34 – you’re both wrong and you’re both partially right. The finance dept is not completely self funded nor is it all just General Fund money and just about all agencies receive an appropriation. An appropriation is just the Legislative approval to spend money, regardless of source.
#36 what pray tell funds the finance department if it is not taxpayer money??? I don’t think they are a private business . . .the money they spend HAS to come from taxes.
#37 – didn’t say it it wasn’t taxpayer money.
If it’s taxpayer money, it’s not in any way shape or form “self-funded.” This contract spends OUR MONEY. And they HAVE to TELL US WHERE IT GOES.
I still would like an explanation as to how the state finance department is “self-funded” when every dime they run on comes from taxpayers.
anybody ever seen a thread with 40 plus post dealing with riley that 2010 hasn’t chimed in on?? he could at least pop on and say “KMA” or something. :)
#35 Anonymous. So the quote from the Governor’s office saying that Paragon was contracted to update computer systems was a biased report. Weak rebuttal anonymous.
Just an observation. I find it amusing This Company Paragon has the same name Paragon in Las Vegas that Rob Riley is associated with.
