Alabama Unemployment Numbers

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations has released (pdf) the monthly unemployment numbers.

This month, 10.4% of the population (or about 217,306 people) are out of work.  There is also a map (pdf) showing unemployment by county.

Of that number, 89,785 are receiving their pennies averaging $207.21 per week.

Something to ponder as the seasonal charitable drives kick off.

Edit: fix map link, thanks rob.

The map is a dead link.

Oh well, I guess that big “unfunded mandate” in Federal Stimulus dollars, which could have been retired by legislative action would be a big help right now, huh Governor Riley, Chairman Hubbard, and Mr. Stacy?

Raising taxes on small businesses is no way to help stimulate the economy. The Legislature did the right thing when it didn’t take that DC bribe.

Jefferson County Employees were “unemployed” via thieir unpaid furloughs. Did ya’ see where some of them will be on four days indefinitely? That’s because someone has figured out there were too many of them to start with.

    LOL@Brian Johnson

  • Whether or not there were too many JeffCo employees to start with, they are human beings, many with families to support, who are unemployed and struggling.

Something to ponder as the seasonal charitable drives kick off.

    Thank you, walt.

Before worrying about those poor Jefferson County employees, give a thought to all the regular workers who have lost jobs because of the mismanagement of County government. There are a lot more of those than the 1000 at the County who still get their Insurance and will go back as soon as the New Tax is collected, not so with the regular workers in jefferson Co.

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
