Condoleezza Rice Reaches Out to Alabama Citizens

Reader John Crenshaw emails his amusement at the first sentence of this story from the Birmingham News site this morning:

Condoleezza Rice has joined two exclusive Birmingham-area private golf clubs, part of what the former U.S. secretary of state’s team called a plan to regularly visit Alabama and reach out to its citizens.

And, you know, her team probably wishes it could have a do-over on that one.

    If they don’t, they should.

Here’s the quote from Rice’s CoS:

“She is looking forward to coming to Birmingham regularly and enjoying her newfound passion of golf,” said Colby Cooper, Rice’s chief of staff. “She enjoys visiting Alabama immensely and wants to re-establish her roots there.”

Maybe Russell should ask for a do-over on his paraphrasing of that quote, which didn’t say what Russell says it did.

  • John, something went awry, and it could have been in the paraphrasing, but we have no basis for knowing that the first sentence was a paraphrase of the quote you mention that is later in the article. However, if someone with first hand knowledge wants to assert that the article misrepresented what was actually said, I’m glad to note that here.

Dr. Rice would never make such a comment personally. She is too bright and too humble for that. I have a feeling the story took liberties and did in fact paraphrase. Or, maybe her staff is lacking in tact…

As long as she listens to Carl Spackler, the Greens Keeper, she should alright.

Danny, we also have no basis for believing that Rice or her team said what Russell’s lead states, as there is no other quote from her or her staff included in the article. The only quote in the article does not match up to Russell’s description of what her staff supposedly said.

Condi Rice vs. Charles Barkley for the 2014 Gov race? I cannot think of a more entertaining election

She will really get to know the average citizen, being a member at Shoal Creek and Greystone. She still is out of touch just like the rest of the Bush administration.

Only in your dreams — the residency requirement for governor is seven years.

“Out of touch” is trying to shove a government run helth program down the throats of a citizenry that doesn’t want it.

  • 2010

    right on, post 10.

  • Roy

“Out of touch” is believing that your small regional political party, having been trounced in the last two elections, still speaks for the “citizenry.” But I guess if you can’t spell “health” you probably can’t remember all the way back to November.

Cut out the article with your safety scissors and paste it in your slambook. Giggle over it in homeroom.

Is a throw-away line from a puff piece worth this snickering? There are a few more serious issues before us.

The last comment is right! There is no news here and there are more serious issues before us.

    But it sure is funny.

No wonder they couldn’t find weapons of mass destruction if they don’t even know where to look for regular Alabama citizens.

Alabama should be proud Dr. Rice is from this state. Anyone that thinks otherwise is clouded by political hate. She is a bright and admirable woman in every regard.

  • SamfordDem

She is a bright woman and I admire her accomplishments but she was not an effective NSA or Secretary of State. Obama, whatever you might think of him, was smart to put someone in at NSA who had military experience and to put a person in at SoS who had personal relationships and institutional knowledge instead of a bunch of research papers.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
