Michel Nicrosi “absolutely 100%” in AG Race

Seal of the Attorney General's officeLook for Mobile attorney Michel Nicrosi to announce that she will run for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. A Democratic Party regular tells the Parlor that she is “absolutely 100%” in the AG race and that she will begin making calls this week attempting to round up support.

Nicrosi served sixteen years as a federal prosecutor with four of them as chief of the Southern District’s Criminal Division. Artur Davis’s advisory committee had recommended Nicrosi for the U.S. attorney’s position in Montgomery earlier this year.

Incumbent Troy King and Luther Strange vie for the nomination on the Republican side in what many expect will be a bruising contest, but – Giles Perkins rumors notwithstanding – a solid Democratic candidate had not yet emerged. (Attorney James Anderson has also considered a run for the Democratic nomination, but we now hear he is considering other races.)

  • Surprising that another Davis person is going to run.

What happens when/if Davis fails to get pass the primary? Surely the democrats are going to put up a non-Davis person for the AG office?

  • Baudrillard

Wow. That’s almost surprising. Michelle will be great, and I think she will stack up well against whoever the Repub nominee is. This race is turning out to be very interesting.

And, Danny, you rightly note that the big question now is what will James Anderson do? I also wonder if that forecloses a Perkins candidacy. After all, Giles was heard telling folks that he would raise 2 mil for this race.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Troy King’s entire campaign staff walked out a couple of weeks ago?

  • Anonymous in #3, not that I can tell. I hear that a fundraiser from out of state left at the end of August, and that a couple of summer interns left. If there is more to it than that, I don’t know it.

I can’t imagine that Ms. Nicrosi would scare anybody out of this race. Having successfully defended Paul Hamrick is not exactly the ticket to the AG’s office. Don’t get me wrong, she would likely make a fine AG, and surely would be better than the incumbant.

  • Mr. Jinks

Troy King has a campaign staff? I thought his campaign consisted of just his facebook page and a few visits to Houston County.

So a Mobile attorney with no statewide name ID is going to do better that the well known Mobile DA, who lost to the Boy Wonder by 6% in 2006?

  • waltm

Tyson lost because he alienated the Black vote by getting involved in the junior college mess in Mobile. Nicrosi should be able to count on that block in the General with DAvis on the top of the ticket.

  • princeliberty

Tyson actually ran a campaign in 06?

  • JD

Where does the drop in Black support for Tyson in 2006 show up?

Statewide 47% Tyson, 5% better than Baxley

Macon Co 78% Tyson, same as Baxley

Greene Co 79% Tyson, 2% better than Baxley

The AG race and the Chief Justice race had the same turnout, but a swing of 60,000 vote betweet Rep & Dem was the difference in Cobb winning and Tysons losing.

Don’t see any Black vote in that swing.

  • lol

I heard Giles Perkins couldn’t pass the height requirement for qualification.

If it is true that Sessions succesfully blocked her USAtty bid, which has been circulated, Nicrosi must have some baggage that would hurt her. Not sure its fair to say she’s a Davis person. That would be Giles Perkins who supposedly is Davis choice for party chair if he pulls off the win.

  • anon

Giles may be Party Chair going into 2010 if Turnham doesn’t turn the sinking ship around soon.

  • Anonymous

First, Giles Perkins will never be party chair as long as Paul Hubbert and Joe Reed have as many supporters on the State Democratic Executive Committee as they currently do. There is bad blood there from Perkins’ time as Executive Director of the party.

Secondly, I found Prince Liberty’s comment about Tyson’s 2006 campaign interesting on this forum given the constant support that Dave Mowery seems to get for all his other campaign efforts (not saying at all that Mowery’s support comes from the Prince). I guess Mowery just could not over come the Troy King tidal wave in 2006 with a candidate that, on paper, was far better than King.

Lastly, to those who underestimate Michel Nicrosi, you do it at your own peril. I am not involved in the 2010 AG’s race, and personally believe it will be difficult for ANY Democrat to win, regardless of whether the Republicans nominate King or Strange. But she has been successful at everything she has ever attempted (except getting the support of Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions for US Attorney, which is a whole other interesting story that has nothing to do with her personal qualifications). Her record as an assistant US Attorney was excellent, even award-winning, and she is something neither King, nor Strange, nor Perkins is – a proven prosecutor.

  • Baudrillard

Anon 13, thank you for clearing that up about Nicrosi. Her issues with the USA appointment were soley political, as most could guess. Anon 11, the only baggage you will find is that she stepped on some toes trying to enforce the law while in the USA’s office in Mobile. Some of those toes are now under black robes and have close allies in the U.S. Senate.

I for one, think that having an agressive prosecutor at AG, and not a political prima donna, will be a refreshing change.

  • Huntsville Hammer

#13, Mowery certainly has his fans and detractors around here. I think he is BIG enough to take it, lol.

The Tyson campaign was lost because of Tyson’s insistence on running the campaign as well as being the candidate, and Mowery’s job of raising money speaks for itself. They had as much as the incumbent.

#6 jinks….you yanks can’t stand it when the wiregrass gets a little attention can you??

  • princeliberty

Tyson ran a terrible campaign. It was true a trainwreck.

The fact that King still could not walk all over him in the general shows that Tyson could have won with a good campaign.

    Any truth to this blog?
    http://truthontroy.blogspot.com/
not very gossipy or personal, but still…

  • nomethmom

I think the one to watch in this race is Etowah County DA Jimmie Harp. He has good party connections, is very media savvy and a proven prosecutor on the street level. The Zerometh campaign started by Harp was brilliant. He would have to give up his job as DA to run but rumor is he is in.

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
