Treasurer’s Race Shaping Up – Updated

Alabama Treasury SealThe 2010 Treasurer’s race has begun to take shape in recent days. Republican Terry Dunn is in. Democrat Jeremy Sherer is in. (Did you see his announcement video?) Republican Jeremy Oden is out. Democrat Stephen Black is out.

State Rep. Barry Mask (R – Wetumpka) has told me that he is considering running for Treasurer (and is also considering a run for state Senate). He told me that he expects to decide by Labor Day. Stephen Evans, a retirement plan advisor from Dothan, is looking at getting in on the Republican side. The grapevine also says that Young Boozer in the Governor’s Finance office is considering a run on the Republican side.

Democrat Ron Sparks assured me emphatically some weeks ago that he is in the governor’s race for the long haul, but speculation has not died (probably to his frustration) that he may ultimately land in this race.

That looming shadow over the race? It’s the PACT debacle. No doubt all candidates would like to see the legislature fix that in the next session before the campaign heats up.

Is there actually a guy named “Young Boozer?”

And is he going to run on “Conservative Christian Values?”

I sure am glad that Sherer has a local weather feature on his campaign website…

Supposedly a Republican from Dothan is looking at running to – Steven Evans…

  • Yes, he is, AL-Res. I have updated the post.

“Young Boozer” is that an inside joke?

Surely that can’t be somebody’s name

Sparks is a sure bet to win the Treasurer’s race. I don’t think he is rich — Seems to me like he’d opt for job security and drop out of the Gov race.

  • One who knows

Yes, there is someone by the name of Young Boozer. And I must say, he’s a jewel of a guy. Very level headed and intelligent.

Heard on the news that Governor Riley will be appointing the County Commission seat vacated by Todd Strange by the end of the week. Who’s got interest in the seat?

“8.Yes, there is someone by the name of Young Boozer. And I must say, he’s a jewel of a guy. Very level headed and intelligent.”

He really needs to run on his middle name, or something.

    The mind boggles.

Second hand information regarding Barry Mask’s future political aspirations: I just completed a call to the Morris/Montiel Viewpoint talk radio program (107.9FM in Montgomery, http://newstalk1079.com/joomla/ on the internet where anyone can listen live by clicking on the LISTEN LIVE BUTTON from 7-10am M-F) and asked if they had heard that Mask might run for Treasurer or the Senate as reported here. Mark Montiel said he had asked Mask about running for either office and that I could write here that Mask had told him (Montiel) the he would not.

Jay and Lucy, I know Young as well, and I cannot agree more with OWK. Young is as good a guy as we could ask for in public office. And, don’t let his name fool you, Jay. Young is an upstanding member of our church here in Montgomery, and I would be proud to have him as our State Treasurer.

The Sparks is out rumors are coming from Dems who think either Folsom or Cobb would be under irresistible pressure to reconsider if Davis was running solo. Doubt there’s any substance to them, both Bedford and Cobb offered his choice of Treasurer or Congress and he turned them both down.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
