Ken Rudin at NPR.org places Bob Riley 11th (out of 22) on his ranking of Republican governors most likely to reach the White House. Me? I would have put Riley ahead of Sarah Palin and Mark Sanford.

Ranking Mark Sanford at 9 out of 22 causes me to dismiss that list completely. Sanford is toast.
I’d say Mark Sanford has a better chance being elected President than Kay Ivey has being elected Governor of Alabama
He is angling for something. I think with Sanford out of the picture, he may be thinking hard about Pres.
Riley has 0% of going to the White House?
And rank him above Palin? No only just she already have a strong national base.
She has time on her side. In a Republican party lacking in national leaders she is one the few.
And Alaska has avoided going into a recession.
She can run whenever she wants 2012, 2016, 2020.
Rarely can does a person have national ID and a national base and can wait without either losing the base or simply being too old to wait.
The more Obama goes down the more it will help her.
Even if turns into second term collapse like Bush.
Sanford should be ranked #57, because according to Obama, the US has 57 states.
Riley has as much chance of living in the White House as Ron Sparks does the Governors Mansion!
Riley can probably get a job parking cars for Obama. That’s about as close as he’ll get! He better be content going back to Clay County and growing chickens, selling used cars or spending time with the grands!
I guess you’re trying to be funny, Danny, saying Riley has a better chance than Palin. Chances are neither will ever make it, so it’s a moot point. However, I think you’re comment was asinine with respect to Palin.
JD Hogg, we seem to be in agreement that chances are neither will ever make it. :)
I wish Riley were President. I’d vote for Bob any day of the week over this joke of a president we have now. Obama is not even qualified – or deserving – to be a dog catcher, let alone commander in chief of the United States. Riley has a proven record of turning an economy around. If he could do with this country what he did with the state when he took office, I’d feel a lot better about the world in which my children will grow up.
Huh?
Danny, thanks for that photo. How long did it take you to get that shot? It’s a good one.
Maybe it could grace the cover of your first contemporary loner cowboy romance novel.
Thunder3325 has pledged to purchase at least one copy.
Readers should be fair to Governor Riley. The Governor has expressed no intentions of running for anything else except his Clay County farm.
Agree on every issue or not, Governor Riley has represented our state well. We have not been embarrassed by Governor Riley.
Indeed, he has. Unlike Mark Sanford, John Ensign, Eliot Spitzer, and “Hot” Rod Blagojevich.
Shouldn’t Arnold be listed as last since he is ineligible to run for president or is the NV Gov ineligible too?
The NV Governor will probably be in jail sometime in the near future.
Another point about Riley, is Riley himself is no trying.
So Riley needs some sort of draft movement to be done by people who have never heard of him!
We shouldn’t discount our own. Riley would be a better President than we have had in the past two decades.
what do you mean #15..”We shouldn’t discount our own” how many times has riley discounted his own?? he should go the the farm….
I mean that our Governor is just as (and more than) qualified and capable as any other Governor you could stack him up against.
CC – just because he doesn’t agree with you and gilley on CCrossing does not mean he is a bad guy or a bad governor.
Riley was always bragging on the great Bush Jr.,
Riley has all the vision of mister magoo.
I see Riley more as Shelby’s successor in the US Senate or as Secretary of Agriculture under the next GOP administration…not as President of the United States.
no way riley is going to be prez. i agree he would be good in the senate, however. but for all we know, he is glad to go home and retire from public life. he has done a very good job…. the only governor in recent memory that is either not in jail or an embarrassment to the state in other ways. he is a sharp guy, sober, ethical, and will leave this state better than he found it. i think he is sincere in his decisions in trying to make this state a better place. like all governor’s he had mistakes…. his amendment one proposal was too big of a package to propose and his appointment of troy king was laughable. but all in all, he has done well.
2010 – You have let Riley roll back your mental odometer 25 years. It was 1984 the last time the state was in an equally bad condition. By any objective economic comparison, Fob was a far better governor. I know that stings, but the truth hurts. Just like every one out of ten Alabamians is hurting in the unemployment line, just like the kids are hurting in deep and destructive proration, just like the elderly are hurting, etc., etc. All this from the “jobs and education” governor. I admire your misplaced loyalty to Riley, but to say that “he will leave this state better than he found it,” is incredulous.
I’m sure that the national economy and unemployment rates have nothing to do with that. Was the national economy in “the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression” in 1984? Make a real apples to apples comparison – your blind loyalty is clear.
23# I would point out that when Riley became Govenror our state unemployment rate was well below the national average and now it is above it and the unemployment rate is rising far faster than the national.
Therefore, it seems the national economy explains the majority of Alabama’s rising unemployment but that there is state factor as the state is doing worse than the nation anyway you slice it.
And consider Riley brags about his great economic developments record. That’s hot air.
And the thing what we really need is a better business climate (including education reform) so the
states small and medium business grow. Instead
our Governor’s ever since Folsom Jr. have be focused on bringing it this or that big company that’s going to bring some miracle change.
Wrong gameplan. But as for Fob, he bought onto the same gameplan, except no one did worse at landing the big companies.
