2010 Candidate Update

Outline of Alabama with '2010'Brian at Flashpoint tells us that Republican Cheryl Baswell Guthrie is contemplating a 2010 campaign for the 5th Congressional District against freshman Democrat Parker Griffith. She lost the nomination for the seat in 2008 to Wayne Parker. No indication, Brian says, that Wayne Parker wants to be the nominee for the 4th time.

I have updated the 2010 Big List accordingly.

While I’m at it, I’ll mention that I updated the 2010 House Elections Directory with several additions over the weekend.

Also, April Weaver has officially announced her campaign for House District 49 that is being vacated by Cam Ward. You may read her press release here in Word format.

Guthrie is a “no go”. And for that matter, so is Martha Roby in AL 02. By no go – I mean a non starter. 2010 will likely be a favorable year for the GOP in Congressional elections. However, without fielding good candidates, the opportunity will be missed. I hope that better candidates will emerge for both of these Congressional slots. The democrats were better in 2008, at recruiting candidates than the GOP. If the GOP wants to win these seats back, they need to to do a better job in recruiting the best candidates to run.

2010 – if you’re so smart, who should the gop recruit to run against bright and griffith?

  • 2010

in terms of bright – there are a couple of smart, solid, well liked business folks from the wiregrass that could give it a good run. in terms of griffith, I personally did not find guthrie impressive on her last try.

  • Wamp

I think a candidate from the Wiregrass is needed to beat Bright. Barring that, someone from Prattvegas or and Elmoron. They can have a legitimate claim to governing many of those who relocated out of Montgomery during Bright’s term.

The funniest thing about that race is that the GOP will have an even worse message than in 2008. There is no way they beat Bright because he “voted for Pelosi.”

  • William

No, but they’ll have anything that he sided with Obama on. Watch Obama’s approval ratings fall 15-20 more points in Alabama between now and then.

  • 2010

I agree with both popst 4 and 5. The GOP needs to stop the whole “he supports pelosi” crap. Instead, tell us what you will do, what your convictions are, what the GOP stands for, etc. In other words, give us a reason to vote for you instead of “the other guy is evil” stuff. As post 5 noted, Obama’s ratings are likely to fall in Alabama as his tax and spend, spend, spend policies are likely to get worse. Nationalized healthcare, more gov’t take overs, etc. Even if Bright tries to cloak himself as a fiscal conservative, he still may get the wrath of unhappy voters. Mid term elections are usually harsh for the majority party, thus he may suffer that. Also, his surge of votes in Montgomery County that created his victory will not be there in 2010 without Obama on the ballot.

Danny, I believe you can add Giles Perkins to the big list for AG.

  • Baudrillard

JPO, if that is true, it will be interesting to see how Anderson responds. Does that push him into the HD73 race?

  • Wamp

I’d pay good money to see Giles fight Troy King

  • Bham Insider

I heard Artur Davis really wants Giles in the race, because of his fund raising ability. He thinks that Giles is the only person with enough oomph to raise the money to beat King or Strange. That might way on Anderson’s decision making and push him into the HD 73 race.

artur needs to worry about his own efforts and stop thinking he has any control over other offices…..

Cheryl Baswell-Guthrie does not pay her bills. Not at her law firm, not with her campaign.
