Kay Ivey to Announce for Governor on Wed.

State Treasurer Kay Ivey will become the fifth Republican to launch a 2010 campaign for governor when she announces on Wednesday, June 24, according to an email she sent out this morning.

She joins Robert Bentley, Bradley Byrne, Tim James and Roy Moore in the race for the GOP nomination. (Regular Parlor readers knew before most that she was running and that she was expected to announce in late June.)

Dear Friends & Patriots:

When I messaged you last month, I told you we would conduct a second round of statewide polling of Republican voters. I said I wanted to see whether it confirmed the optimistic results of the first round of polling we did in November. Based on the analysis of this latest polling information, I would then decide whether to run for governor.

We conducted our latest round of polling in late May - and the news is very good. We found:

* Kay Ivey's name is known by 67% of Republican voters in Alabama;

* By better than 2-to-1, Republican voters said they have a "favorable" impression rather than an "unfavorable" one of Kay Ivey;

* And nearly four of five Republicans share Kay Ivey's view that the most important issues demanding immediate action in our state today are jobs and the economy, improving education, tackling high taxes and bloated government spending.

Based on these results, I want you to be the first to know that I will officially announce my candidacy for governor at a series of campaign kick-off events on Wednesday, June 24. You are cordially invited to attend the one nearest you:

8:30 a.m.        Montgomery        State Capitol South Lawn
                                         Avenue of Flags

11:00 a.m.        Birmingham        Statue of Liberty
                                         Liberty Park

2:00 p.m.        Huntsville        U.S. Space and Rocket Center
                                         "Pathfinder" Display

      5:30 p.m.        Mobile            Oysterella's Seafood Restaurant
                                         1175 Battleship Parkway, Spanish Fort

At each of these events, I will explain why I am seeking the honor of working for the citizens of Alabama as your next governor, the experience I have gained that has prepared me for this moment, and the vision I have for moving our state ahead and fulfilling Alabama's potential.

I would be delighted to share this milestone moment with you. Please plan on joining me next Wednesday if your schedule permits. If it does not, I welcome your participation with your prayers. If you have any questions or advice, please email me at kay@kayivey.org or call my headquarters in Montgomery at (334) 293-9300.

Please forward this message to your friends, relatives, neighbors and associates and help us spread the news.

Together, we can keep Alabama moving ahead toward the future we want and so richly deserve.

May God bless us all,

Kay

Her decision is apparently based on her polling which shows high name id, to be expected after the PACT debacle. Then she makes the astute observation: “By better than 2-to-1, Republican voters said they have a ‘favorable’ impression rather than an ‘unfavorable’ one of Kay Ivey.” Maybe someone will let her in on a closely guarded secret: the Republicans only decide her primary; all Alabamians, Republicans and Democrats, will be deciding who the Governor is. Amazing, I know.

  • JD

Same must apply to Folsom, since it’s his PACT plan and he’s on the Board of Directors. And let’s not forget Bradley, he’s on the Board also.

  • Jura Nostra

“May God Bless us All” Indeed, Kay…

  • Really sad. I pity this woman, sadly filled with delusions.

  • William

What’s with all the third person, “Kay Ivey’s name…”, etc.. wasn’t the letter signed Kay Ivey?

  • One would think, given her current job, that Ivey would consider restoring the viability of the PACT program and keeping the promises made to contract holders to be a priority, yet it’s not even mentioned in this letter.

If she has no plans or ability to fix that, then she must think the “Peter Principle” works in Alabama politics as well as in corporations.

  • 2010

Kay should run for Lt. Gov instead.

  • JD

    What is more delusional?

Kay Ivey receiving 715,726 votes in 2006
    657,576 votes in 2002
    134,,395 votes in 2002 Primary

Tim James 30,871 votes in 2002 Primary

  • Susan

Robert Bentley should run for Lt. Gov.

  • Thom Davis

    Stop the insanity!

  • 2010

I agree susan – can we just move ivey and bentley to the lt gov race and let moore, james and byrne run in the gov race. it would be a lot less sloppy that way!

  • LA

I have yet to talk to a single person who thinks Kay will be a factor in 2010. And I keep thinking about her “funny money” report where she supposedly loaned her campaign $1 million at the end of the year so it would show on her report, then took it out.

  • Wamp

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

  • really?

Her actions are what a friend of mine would characterize as political masturbation.

  • Bleever

Are there seats left on the “Delusion Express”? Artur and now Ivey ?
Is there anyone else who has absolutely no chance of winning the election getting into the race?
Is Scrushy going to mount a write-in effort?

  • 2010

i have yet to see a comment on here from anyone…not just with this post but others…. that thinks Ivey will be a factor in the race for Gov. I personally think Kay is likable, she obviously has statewide name recognition, and if need be, she can self finance. All that said, it seems like she would be smart enough to see the writing on the wall that says….run for something, anything, but Governor. Have we even had a candidate announce for Lt. Gov? I’m telling you Kay, add a “Lt.” to your campaign signs and give it a whirl….

  • Scorpius

John K, so noble of you to pity her. Really. However, JD’s comment is a bull’s-eye observation.

Comically, ironically and incredibly, you find Kay Ivey, who is a two-time statewide winner for constitutional office, delusional and yet you believe Tim James, an egotistical loser who got thrashed 8 years ago, to be sane? Is anybody else in this blog laughing harder than I am??? Sorry, Reverend Rue, not getting that one…

I know the James Gang would love for us to have amnesia 10 years after the fact, but there are many of us out here who remember how utterly disasterous Tinker Fob was for this state and to the Republican party.

We’d be damned fools to chance that “brand” of faux-GOP-ism again. Tinker Timmy is the apple still attached to the limb. But hey, at least he’ll get Judith Ann Neeley’s vote. Let’s all raise our flutes filled with Drain-O to that one!

  • Byrne, James, Moore, Bentley, Davis, and Sparks are at least, sober in actions and appearing. While I am not for all of these individuals, none of them would make me embarrassed before the rest of the country. Fill in the blanks, Brother Scorpius.

  • GOPDONOR

During her last race for state treasurer I contributed over 2,500 to her campaign…a year or so ago I heard she was running for Gov and sent 2 emails and 3 phone calls to let her know I would help her – to this day no return call or email – I have two other friends who experienced the same thing – I think between her unability to return calls to key supporters and this move she has gone off the deep end – get me a Tim James sign I guess!

  • 2010

John Killian, if you like them sober in “actions and appearing” then I assume you do not support Folsom either….

  • Brother Scorpius, if my comments had no credibility, you would ignore them

  • Thom Davis

    I agree with John Killian

    NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • anonymous

She will have the only announcement in history with chicken wire around her to keep her from being pelted by beer bottles, tomatoes, and other debris.

Let’s draft Kay alright – and put her on the frontlines in Iraq . . . .

This total failure insults all Alabamians. She deserves rejection, She RICHLY desrves rejection.

  • Emmett Eaton

Y’all leave ol’ Kay alone. The ol’ gal can’t help her mental status. Heck, any sane woman would know that her chances were over after the PACT fiasco, but this girl is, well….not thinking soberly.
But leave her alone. She will destroy herself out on the stump. The more she meets people, you will have nothing to worry about.
Frankly, I feel sorry for her and think y’all need to cut her some slack.

  • anonymous

Emmett, I like how you worked in that she is not thinking SOBERLY. That’s another issue of hers that hasn’t even been mentioned yet – but everyone in Montgomery knows about it.

This nutcase has no business being governor. How dare she insult voters like this.

  • Baudrillard

Still, nobody has picked up on the fact that her “polling” was only with self-identified Republicans. If that is the basis for her decision to run for Governor, an office elected by Repubs and Dems alike, she is not thinking clearly. Maybe you can enlighten me on that one, Scorpious and JD?

  • William

What was Tim James’ basis for running for Governor? It’s an irrelevant point. She’s got her own money (as Tim James does) and she wants to run for Governor. So, she is.

  • anon

if you really want to know how legit a campaign is, just look at the team. who is kay’s campaign team? and the resume of said team?

  • 2010

post 30 – it is early. we are about a year from the primary. yes, a competent team matters but teams are still being put together. i think the only one that has their team basically complete is james…and he has been running for what seems like a year with the luxury of self finance to the tune of a couple of million.

to post 27, kay is far from the only statewide official that likes the sauce…. jim folsom has that past as well…

kay does have name recognition and she gives a good stump speech and for that…..sure….maybe take a shot at lt gov or ag commish or whatever…she has money to do that is she wants to spend it. But i think the point that is made pretty soundly on this board is that many think she is out of her league in running for gov. then again, guy hunt was elected. pigs may fly again. ever heard of swine FLEW after all?

but for me, i do not and will not support her for gov. maybe kay, troy king and ronnie sparks can go in business together once they are all out of a job…

  • JuliaWard

Kay should have had her focus on fixing PACT and not another office. I wouldn’t trust her with the State since she is so selfish that she seems to move on even when she is in crisis.

  • JD

I would guess her polling of Republicans was because the fisrt election is the Republican Primary, a fact Tim seemed to overlook last time he ran.

  • N

Go Kay Ivey!! Don’t listen to Pastor Killen!

  • Landingham

    To JD-
You, like most Republicans, must have really been glad when Folsom decided to run for reelection rather than Governor. Every chance you get, you take a pot shot at him, even when there is little, if any, truth or relevance in what you claim. If you read the actual statutes in play, you would see that the act which he (and George Wallace, Jr.) proposed back in the late 1980’s (how many decades ago is that, JD?), was significantly amended by the Legislature in 2001 to take out language which did provide that, if a contract holder had fully paid, the contract recipient was to receive tuition paid for 8 semesters with nothing else to be paid by the contract purchaser. Yes, when he came back as Lt. Governor, the guarantee language was gone from the statute, new investment advisers had been put in place, his and Wallace’s name had been taken off the program literature (even though it remains in the statute, did anyone ever hear Kay Ivey say the Wallace-Folsom Plan was an investment in children’s futures, until the money went into the tank, when suddenly she started once again calling it the Wallace-Folsom Plan?). I have attended Board Meetings of the plan, JD, under Kay and previous treasurers. The program is a creature of the Treasurer’s office. The board members are board members, who do discuss and vote. However, again, if you read the statute, you will see that both Folsom and Byrne have the authority to serve or have a designee serve. In both instances, if I am correct, they chose to have a designee serve until the Treasurer fully disclosed how badly the program had tanked. Then they have each stepped in. However, the statute places administration of the plan directly under the Treasurer (Section 16-33C-2.1 if you are interested in the law).

    Go Kay GO – AWAY!!!!!!!!!

Running for governor immediately after an embarrassing public exhibition of incompetence in office is proof of insanity. They should be preparing Kay’s rubber room at Bryce today . . . .

  • Chef

Ivey doesn’t even have the creativity to come up with her own announcement schedule.

  • anonymous

I have a more appropriate “kick-off” schedule for Kay:

8:00 AM – Bryce State Mental Hospital, Tuscaloosa

10:00 AM – Mental Health Ward, Brookwood Medical Center, Birmingham

12 Noon: Talking to herself while pushing a shopping cart, Downtown Birmingham

  • anonymous

Personally I feel bad for whoever is running Kay’s Campaign because they clearly have no clue what they are doing…especially the communications crew. It’s pretty pathetic to watch. Kay is such a sweet lady, but that’s about it. She should just stop wasting her time and money on the campaign now before it is a total loss.

  • Jim

This announcement tour looks like it was torn out of the Bentley playbook. And I agree with Susan, Bentley should run for LT Gov.

  • anonymous

There have been some rumors about hecklers at her kickoff announcement. Has anyone heard about this?

  • anonymous

I just heard there were fewer than 20 people present at either Birmingham or Montgomery – not sure which stop. But the crowd was pitifully small.

  • Scott

Great news, now I can vote against her sorry ass !
