SD-22 Campaign Peek

Still travelling, and online time is limited.

Perhaps there is more to be said about the SD-22 race. There certainly are a lot of people talking about it. In the meantime, I’ll offer this direct mail piece that went out from the state GOP in support of Greg Albritton.

Direct mail piece from AL-GOP

Another special election is coming up for Keahey’s House seat, and next week is the SD-7 special election between Democrat Laura Hall and Republican Paul Sanford.

I bet your average SD 22 voter has no clue who 3 of those 4 people are. But hey, they can pick out that colored fella.

  • AL-Res

This was created and planned by the consultants and sent by the party – not created by the party.

  • dylan

aweful, terrible and dumb mailer. no wonder the gap was so large.

  • walt moffett

And folks wonder why the R’s can’t win…

  • JJ

When will Republicans learn that is a stupid attack?

  • AL-Res

If 30% of voters in SD22 could name all four people in the car (since there are no name tags under the photos), I’d be highly surprised.

  • Jay Love loves that mailer.

Or is it Bobby Bright who loves it?

  • Anonymous

Possibly the least effective mailpiece I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe they wasted postage on that. Whomever came up with that never needs to do a piece of Republican mail again.

  • Mullet

That stuff used to work, but no more. Repblicans, don’t be afraid to tell people what you will accomplish if elected to office.

  • Mullet

And one more thing, the people are facing backwards. The picture doesn’t even make sense.

  • That is classically bad. Who did this?

  • Mr. Jinks

    Awful. Crap.

Maybe it wasn’t created by the party, but there’s still no excuse for signing off and/or paying for crap pieces of mail like that.

  • um…

    who is the driver?

  • RTR

The only way this would be effective is if this was an actual picture. I’m sure Pelosi really sweated the Alabama State Senate District 22 Special Election…When will Republicans realize that playing off of the ignorance of Alabama voters doesn’t work like it used to? Like Twinkle running for PSC and saying she was pro-life…I don’t recall Roe vs. Wade appearing on any PSC docket that I’ve ever seen.

And #10 is exactly right…they aren’t facing the right way…GOP: quit making mailers in a van outside Keahey’s house.

  • Someone really should submit this ad to Photoshop Disasters.

  • WCS

This mailing brings to mind a statement Artur Davis made weeks ago–the way Democrats win in Alabama is if they get to engage the electorate on their issues, distancing themselves from the national party. If Democrats in Alabama, such as Keahy, succeed in defining themselves, ads like this that lump a Democratic State House candidate with national figures do not work.

  • dylan

yeah, laura hall is engaging the electorate on the issues…issues that are important to most bigots.

I am a Republican, but I get so frustrated with our campaign strategists. I wish they could get it through their thick skulls that the “liberal” paint isn’t sticking anymore. There was a time when those tactics would work, but frankly, voters are sick of that tired old message of painting every Democrat as a far-left socialist.

My fellow Republicans, I strongly agree that the party must return to its conservative roots of lower taxes, less government, strong national security, and family values. But we cannot and will not win elections by trying to convince voters that everyone who has a “D” by their name is in league with Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, and Barack Obama. Leave off the “liberal” name calling and explain your ideas, your platform, your plans for solving real problems. Offer solutions, not empty, old rhetoric. It would be so nice to see a Republican next election cycle who could come up with mailouts and TV ads that aren’t the same old liberal bashing. Maybe if the GOP would hire me as a campaign strategist, we could get something accomplished.

  • #10, I think they’re facing backward to convey the not so subtle message that they’re going the wrong way. In addition to the poor execution, they seriously over-thought the concept.

That is tame (and tasteful) compared to some of the other mailers that Albritton sent out. Manure slinging campaign.

post 9 and 19 are totally correct. this tactic is old and not effective for the GOP. Republicans need to tell voters what it is the party believes in – what they will do – engage them – talk to them and give them a reason to vote with the GOP instead of a reason not to vote for the other guy all the time. The GOP has good ideas and is on the right side of issues like taxes and out of control government spending. Tell that story instead of throwing up pictures of Pelosi and Obama. Besides, this was a state race….Hubbert has an influence but throwing Pelosi and Obama in was just stupid.

  • I hope no one paid for that.

I’m sick of the GOP trying to tie every local Democrat to Obama/Pelosi/Reid. It is an intellectually pitiful tactic. Trying to label someone who is endorsed by the NRA as a wild eyed liberal is dumb. It makes you lose all credibility.

It is interesting that none (that I know of) of the GOP candidates for Gov. are hiring consultants from Alabama. Is it because there is not a decent GOP consultant in the state? I guess not….that seems the likely answer. I think James folks are from GA and Byrne’s from FL. I think Ivey’s are from out of state but not sure where….and Bentley….not sure he can afford any right now. I know they may have a press sec. or a manager on the ground that is from AL but the actual consultants that make the strategic decisions are all imports.
That being said, Davis and Sparks might be pulling folks from out of state as well…..not sure….anyone know?

  • Brian Johnson

Artur has Ami Copeland, the former Israeli Defence Forces soldier, from the Obama campaign, raising money for him…and someone else from the Obama shop.

  • For the past few years, Alabama Republicans have focused on how Democrats are supported by AEA and the Trial Lawyers. This is running very thin.
Somehow, the general public is catching on to a lack of innovation and ideas.
I sincerely hope the GOP can win the legislature in 2010. But they will have to do better than cry “wolf” about AEA and Trial Lawyers.

Democrats have learned an NRA Card and membership in the Baptist Church is a liscense to steal in Alabama.

Beliefs don’t matter, just the ID cards

  • some guy

Part of the reason that they keep banging this drum is that it worked for Republicans in the past, and part is that it’s all they needed in the past. Most of the Republican operatives in this state have never needed a clever general election strategy, and they get (intellectually) fat and lazy off of weak ideas. They have to bring in outsiders who have actually had to think for a living in order to win races.
