Those interested in who the next Speaker of the Alabama House maybe should read, The Shoals place in the Statehouse at the Times Daily.
Marcel Black seems likely but then Demetrius Newton might have something to say about it.
Should be some interesting maneuvering going on and lots of imponderables.

I think you better wait until the results in November 2010.
Even if the Republicans don’t take control they very well make gain enough seats to back a conservative Democrat and put that person in.
I suspect the election results will knock Newton out.
It would be great to finally have someone lead the House from a major urban hub in the state.
I wholeheartedly agree with #2 – the I-65 corridor is where the population center in the state is based, yet the major cities continually receive short-shrift from the rural areas who have maintained the leadership in the House and Senate over the years.
Demetrius Newton would be 83 years old in 2010. A little long in the tooth for the Speakers job
John Wilder served as the leader of the Tennessee State Senate from 1988-2006 thanks to two or three conservative democrats and the entire GOP caucus. Current Tennessee State House Speaker Kent Williams(R) was elected Speaker back in January of this year thanks to the support of the entire democrat caucus in the House. Wilder returned the favor by giving the GOP favorable redistricting plans in ‘92 and ‘02 and chairmanships. Williams hasnt done much for the democrats as of yet. When you look at whats he’s done the first four months. He’s pretty much towed the GOP line. Over in Mississippi the GOP controls the state senate even though their in the minority. In Lousianna, the GOP controls the State House as well despite being in the minority. It’ll be interesting to see if that happens in Alabama if the GOP comes up short in the election.
Is it just me and my computer, or are the links not working on this story?
Hey, Dan.
Do have anybody who stands out a possible Democrat Rep. that the Republicans would support for Speaker?
Matthew – fixed links.
I’m surprised to see that Ken Guin has not been mentioned in this post. Marcel would be good, but Guin would certainly bring fundraising to the table.
I’m surprised Mike Hubbard isn’t mentioned either.
Baud, Guin can’t get elected. Too many R’s and D’s mistrust him. He can and should put his money on whoever he thinks can be elected so as to retain chair of Rules.
There are some D’s that R’s could support other than Black. Lindsey, for one. He has proven to be effective and works well with all.
