Main Expected in Court – Updated

Jim MainState Finance Director Jim Main is expected to be appointed as a Judge on the Court of Criminal Appeals today, according to a source in-the-know. The position became open when Greg Shaw was elected to the state Supreme Court last November.

Gov. Bob Riley has wanted Main to fill the spot but also wanted his trusted Finance Director on hand as the budgets made their way through the legislative session. Now that both budgets have passed the legislature, Riley can appoint his first choice to the long empty spot.

Update: In addition to this Associated Press story that confirms Main’s appointment, indirect word out of the Governor’s office is that Bill Newton will be the acting Finance Director. Main’s appointment becomes effective May 15.

  • CC Dollar,

I’m usually with you but …

Using the depicable Lowell Barron is not wise. I’ll hold my nose and side with Main waaaaaaaaay before I’ll side with that scumbag.

  • princeliberty

How about having Riley, Main, Barron and King all leave politics and never come back!

Didn’t Massey Development/Mantra Governmental work on the Sweet Home Alabama campaign for Gilley?

  • CC Dollar

    yes walt..

and if you have anymore questions it will have to wait…fixin to strike out for the beach house…ya’ll have a good weekend !

  • walt moffett

So, following logic here, if Main’s association with Massey Development is bad then … Or am I missing something?

  • 2010

CC and Gilley will associate with anyone – I mean anyone – as long as it furthers their agenda. Lowell B fits right in.

Have a nice weekend CC. I bet the bingo question will probably end up before the Court of Civil Appeals and then the Supreme Court, not the Court of Criminal Appeals

I don’t understand the suggested connection to Main. I will however say the Massey firm is one that should be watched. The firm operates under the radar for the most part. It appears the Massey firm is not liked very much by the Riley folks. There seems to be some bad blood with some Riley contacts and Massey. I don’t know the particulars but I do hear from a lot of people Massey is not someone who you mess with. He is apparently known to be very vendictive and someone who is willing to spend some time running down his enemies to make a point.

massey someone to be scared of? that is laughable. you give him way, way too much credit. it is not like he is in the league with fine/geddie and so forth. but do the riley folks like him? of course not. sweet home alabama and their rag tag coalition of country music has beens and gambling money grabbers have tried to drag bob riley and others they see as road blocks to their precious plans, through the mud. Of course Riley’s folks do not appreciate such actions from massey.

Drayton Nabers, Part II. This man has NO business on a criminal court, yet will be hearing cases because of “friendship.” Sorry to those judges, career prosecutors, and criminal defense lawyers who just got passed over by the Governor. Your years of experience and learning the in’s and out’s of criminal practice weren’t enough to compensate for not knowing Bob. Good news for Democrats, though, as all they have to do is find a prosecutor with 5 or 6 years’ experience and no skeletons and they can pick up a statewide seat. Jim Main can be taken out probably with more ease than Drayton Nabers. There is absolutely no justification for Main as a criminal judge. So, who will be his Sue Bell?

2010, you pro-Riley zealots don’t get it. Massey’s bunch has totally put one over on everybody who has had tunnel vision on the bingo stuff. I understand the Sweet Home folks had a multi-year plan in mind from the first day they launched the Sweet Home campaign. Phase II of their efforts will be a combination of things presented as counter arguments to this year’s bill all designed to be more of a political tool for the 2010 elections than a real effort to pass the Sweet Home concept. You don’t give the Sweet Home bunch and Massey enough credit. Everybody I have ever talked to about the guy tells me he may not have ever been the brightest in the class but he will out work anybody who appears to be in line with him. All you political gurus who get all the big money to manage political campaigns best start figuring out how to cut them off. The gaming bunch is about to box some legislators in very tight boxes for 2010.

I am a Republican but I do agree that appointing judges to appeals courts that have little to no experience actually hearing cases as a judge or arguing cases as attorneys is not a good idea.

  • 2010

i may be wrong about main’s experience……did he argue cases before the appeals court? if so, he may be more qualified than first thought…

Am I missing something here? Wasn’t Jim Main the favorite to get the appointment to Sue Bell Cobb’s seat if she runs for governor? Surely he would not prefer this seat which is up in ‘10 to being chief of the Court, which is not up until 12? Does he have a tip-off that Cobb is staying put, or does Riley have a new candidate to replace Cobb?

  • Old prosecutor

Actually #16, if Cobb runs, Riley could still elevate Main from the Court of Criminal Appeals to Chief Justice and that would then give him another appointment to the Court of Criminal Appeals.

  • 2010

post 13……..laughable. although, i am sure massey and his group love the idea that sweet home alabama is a multi year plan. believe me, they hope it is a 10 year plan so they can bill their clients over and over and over. the issue is a cash cow for consultants. however, i highly doubt that those paying them hope it is multi year. Good luck on ousting jimmy holley in 2010 and others they will try to target. and if bob riley was up for re election i am sure they would come after him also. likewise, they would also lose that battle. personally, sweet home alabama should do all they can to protect their precious troy king in the GOP primary…. he will need it.

  • anon y mous

Any appointment to a vacant Chief Justice’s seat occurring before early Nov. 2009 will have to run in 2010.
