Flood Shuts Down State House – Updated

The State House has been evacuated because of flooding. Elevators are shut down. ABC 33/40 has reported on the air that the power has been shut off and that basement walls “may be compromised”

This was a particularly important day for passing bills with enough time for them to pass in the other chamber before the end of the session.

I guess Phil Poole can take the day off.

Perhaps this means that the Legislature really does need a new State House after all.

wow! what a mess…hate it for all ya’ll..

  • The House and Senate have both reconvened in the Old Capitol Building across the street (on higher ground).

  • wiregrassboondock

I wonder if they will have a better chance of getting something done in the Old Building. Here’s hoping.

This will “seal the deal” on the need for a new state house.

  • I bet Karl Rove did this! I sure hope “the Don”, Lowell,Hank Erwin and Charles Bishop are ok! Alabama couldnt make it without the entertainment value those four bring to the table.

Hopefully Hank Irwin’s is one of cars inundated by our vengeful lord’s flood…

    Obama flooded Alabama.

  • Everything is his fault

    #9, don’t be silly, it’s still President Bush’s fault.

Reminds me of how Hercules cleaned the Augean stables…

Anyone wonder how something floods, when the Statehouse is on the hill with over 100 feet of vertical fall to the river. No way anything should flood in this location.

Wish it had washed them out of Montgomery! Just what Montgomery need, a good “WASHING”!!!!

Hope Senator Larry Means got his “stash” out!

Wonder what kind of sign from God Hank Erwin will think this is?

Being in the Old Chambers was kind of nostalgic and made for some of the old timers being able to tell war stories, but the lack of A/C made it unbearable after 5 minutes.

The Senate ended a Philibuster and passed something like 5 Republican House bills.

The House finished their entire Calendar – Consent, Special Order, and Resolution.

    Good laws were made.

Five minutes before 1:30, Governor Riley made an unannounced appearance – Mike Hubbard was the only legislator to stand and clap. Most jeered or made non-positive noises – even the Republicans. Seems like Governor Riley hates the Legislature more than Governor Wallace did and the feeling seems to be mutual.

Apparently, Hank Erwin called in a favor for the Heavens to open up and wash away all those who want to Free the Evil Alcohol – Hops…

45 cars were three feet of water.

The Building Operations office was the one where the wall caved in – room 16 – in the basement. The water running through there got to thigh high within the minute.

    Anything else?

Oh yeah, the budgets passed. Hooray!

edit – 45 cars were UNDER three feet of water and the basement hallway ended up with 5 vertical feet of water

i dont blame riley for thinking the legislature is full of a bunch of do nothing fools….it is.

  • Doozey

Ok, well, maybe the Governor will sign the bills the legislature sent into law. I never said the Governor said the legislature is “full of a bunch of do nothing fools.”

I’m very confused by the 2010(read: Republican Operative)response – I was only informing of a tift and probably good-natured jeering today between the Legislative and Executive branches of Government. The Governor knows he can help lead the state when he cooperates with the legislature – due to the 50% needed to override an executive veto. Just saying…

The Judiciary should be non-partisan, but that’ll need another storm or flood.

  • 2010

i agree with you 100% that the judiciary should be non partisan. I wish we could get to that point in Alabama.
In terms of my comment about the legislature, that was in response to the notion that the legislature does not like Riley. My point is….there is no good reason they should not. Riley has done a good job for Alabama in my view…better than any other Governor in recent history. The legislature on the other hand, rarely does much good at all.

  • CC Dollar

please run for office, 2010…then let a governor tell you how to vote under threat of being censored….see how much you like that..
