Thompson on List of Potential Supreme Court Justices

Slate.com has Alabama’s Myron Thompson listed among its Top 20 possiblities to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter.

Will Alabama’s Sen. Jeff Sessions succeed Arlen Specter as the senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee and “be the party’s leading voice on the pending nomination?”

Thanks to reader M.

  • Oh the irony and storylines if Thompson were to be the nominee and Sessions to replace Specter.

Who killed the nomination of Jeff Beauregard Sessions to the Federal Bench?

None other than Alabama Senator Howell Heflin

Doesn’t say much for the top 20 list.

Good Gosh, let’s sure hope not!

While Justice Thompson would be an excellent selection for the Supreme Court, the biggest factor against him is his age. Given the moment, I imagine that President Obama will seek to appoint a judge in their 40s or 50s who might have a longer tenure on the bench.

    Seriously?

  • 2010

you guys have got to be kidding me. Anyone that thinks Myron Thompson is US Supreme Court material has a serious screw lose. It almost as bad as when W nominated his white house counsel….what was her name? Harriet Myers???
There is nothing to the story about Thompson. Yes, he is black and I am sure that is why he is on the list (no offense meant) but I think we can all agree Obama will chose a woman as has been widely reported. And even if Myron Thompson was a woman – he would still not be qualified.

2, 3, 5, and 6: none of you are lawyers.

It has been my experience that Judge Thompson will take a long time to rule on a case. I don’t know if he is lazy or just can’t make a decision. I know that Obama will appoint a liberal, but there are more qualified liberals than Judge Thompson.

  • jpo

they all take a long time. and there are reasons for that besides laziness and indecisiveness.

So, I guess we have to thank Howell Heflin for keeping Roger Bedford out of the US Senate.

  • Sessions replace Specter? That would be a big step forward for the GOP. Not.

jpo – thompson is fine as a federal judge. but don’t kid yourself, or anyone else, that he has the qualifications to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court. maybe you should wish that he be elevated to the court of appeals before you start jumping him to the highest court.

  • jpo

plenty of district court judges have been named to the supreme court

what exactly do you think the qualifications are?

  • 2010

do you really think myron thompson is in the same category as the current justices? heck no he is not. and just to note….every current member was first appointed to a court of appeals in the federal court system before getting their seat on the US Supreme Court. No, it is not mandatory to go that route – but it is most often the way it is done. In my view, Thompson lacks the qualifications for US Supreme Court…period.

  • princeliberty

Another Republican would have won had Sessions been a Judge.

    Probably somebody like Congressman Bachus.

  • jpo

I’m sorry, why don’t you think Thompson is in the same category as the current justices? B/c he wasn’t on the court of appeals?

Again, can you say what you think someone has to do to be qualified to be on the supreme court? I’m guessing you don’t have any answer to this question.

  • William

Maybe it’s the same reason that you have for thinking that people without law degrees are not qualified to register their opinion on a random political blog.

  • 2010

give it up jpo – thompson has the same chance to be on the us supreme court that you do at this point. i doubt we will even hear another mention of his name for such a vacancy.

  • jpo

I’d be surprised if any of you had ever read any of his opinions. Or ever talked to any lawyer or judge about him.

I wouldn’t give an opinion about something I don’t know anything about. The fact that you guys would doesn’t make you unqualified to say something.

  • William

Good, then I don’t expect to hear your opinion on anything relating to candidates or policy decisions of the state government if you have never worked in state government or been part of the policy-making body.
