Another GOP Candidate for Gov?

Seal of the Office of the Alabama GovernorA GOP Senate insider flatly confirms to the Parlor what I had heard elsewhere, that a Republican state Senator is looking at getting into the 2010 Governor’s race. Since I can’t get a name, I ask what is the likelihood that the Senator will actually enter the race. “60-40” is the reply. “It’s more likely than not that he’ll enter the race.” And the timetable for an announcement if there is one? “I’d say in six to eight weeks.”

    State Senator or US Senator?

  • State Senator. I edited the post to make it clear. Thanks.

  • Andy

    Very intriguing Danny.

  • 2010

The only person to make a real impact, in my view, is when bradley byrne enters the race. i expect that to happen in june/july.

  • William

I can’t think of a State Senator that I would vote for over Bradley anyway.

  • William

    Maybe it’s Harri Anne.

  • jdt

    Scott Beason?

  • Can you imagine Charles Bishop for Gov and Hank Erwin for Lt Gov? Thats about the only way Artur wins the Governors race next year.

  • CC Dollar

said “he” #6…quit tryin to stir..

    my guesses…jabo or erwin

  • Gamblers4Troy

It’s Charles Bishop. Check with your source.

  • William

Come on, CC, just kidding – Scott Beason is my guess too. Previous post (#5) applies.

  • CC Dollar

#11 bishop could use george wallace’s slogan….”the fightin lil governor”..LOL

  • dylan

cc, obviously it isn’t erwin, see lt gov race. there are only 4 who fit the profile, you can rule 3 of them out pretty quick. outside “the profile,” bishop, sure, he’s brazen enough to do it, not sure what the chances would be of victory but that’s his style.

  • dylan

side note, tony petelos is now “mulling a run” as well.

  • Von Buskirk

Must be Beason. He’s been preening for the media so much the past year he’s got to be up to something.

  • Lyn Johnson

It won’t be Beason. He has committed to help Dr. Bentley.

  • 2010

beason is a jack ass considering how he helped run harri anne smith for congress. i have zero respect for the guy but atleast, even he, disagreed with what she did by endorsing a dem after she lost the GOP run off (sore loser anyone?) To be honest i would not be surprised if harry smith announced a run for statewide office. she is done in her senate district as it is so she might as well try something else. don’t forget that she let it be known she wanted to run against riley in the 06 GOP primary for Gov. and then later changed her mind once she got enough media out of it. Ego anyone? Fresh serving of Ego???

  • princeliberty

I suspect its Bishop going out in style.

Beason has becoming the powerhouse of the Senate in his grasp.

To give that up on a long shot bid for Governor would be unlike.

But Bishop. I bet he was doing some hard drinking and worked up his courage.

I bet his goes for it!

Bombs out. But at least Bentley will beat out somebody.

  • Bowell Larron

Every time I meet someone from the Wiregrass who talks about how great Harri Ann is I permanently lose the ability to ever take that person seriously again.

  • Gunney Highway

“Beason has becoming the powerhouse of the Senate in his grasp.”

    What in the world?

Where is Scorpius for goodness’ sake? From here on out, anyone belonging to this new cult of conservative monotonousness should send all of your postings to Scorpius for a creativity screening.

Since none of you know what the hell you’re talking about, the rest of us would at least appreciate a little entertainment value with your garbage.

Never fear, Scorpius will make life-takers and heart-breakers out of you.

    Thanks.

  • JD

Can’t be Harri Anne. The article said a Republican Senator will run as a Republican, she won’t be on the Republican ballot in 2010.

Is she dating Arlen Specter now?

  • Wiregrassmd

2010, you obviously have a fixation/obsession/fascination with Senator Smith.

I have followed several of your posts on many of the stories here on Doc’s and you always find a way to work her into your posts.

Maybe you should talk with a professional about this.

  • 2010

don’t worry post 22, the “professionals” will be out to defeat her in 2010 and I am glad to speak with them. I can assure you that many, many folks in her senate disctrict cannot wait for that campaign to begin. Just look at what post 20 said,,,,,I cannot agree more.

  • More Like Pee Party

Harri Anne will win in a walk in 2010 – the people know why she did what she did, and they LOVE her. No Pun Intended!

  • Scorpius

Gunney, I’m touched you care. I’ll buy you a brew when the day finally arrives for the Lion to lie down with the Lamb.

No time for creative editing. I’m too busy stocking bottled water, MREs and my cache of automatic gun clips. Unlike Bill Clinton, I’m not going to get caught with my pants down while your boy, Hussein Obama, gives away the store to the Cubans, Venezuelans, Islamists and N.Koreans.

Who knew that “Obama” meant “Despot Bootlicker” in Kenyan?

As for the speculation of the secret senator…Bishop.

  • CC Dollar

I have a ton of respect for Senator Smith…she listened to the people instead of the 4 or 5 money men in town that have held us back for so long…but we all see the type people those “professionals” 2010 speaks of that will be out to get her…they nothing more than nasty spoiled rich folks used to getting things their way…

  • 2010

Post 25, you must live in Geneva county and not Houston County. Otherwise, you lack a grasp of political reality.

  • Gunney Highway

Now do you see how it’s done, Ladies? Thanks, Scorpius.

Oh yeah, Scorpius, once you’re done stockpiling, feel free to give my secretary a call and maybe I’ll have time to drop by and show you how to use all of that stuff.

And yes, Scorpius is on the mark…Bishop is your Huckleberry.

    So there I was…

  • illrember

Beason a jackass? Are you kidding me? He is one of the nicest people in the Senate, and the work he did with Harri Anne was pretty impressive. Her second team (Beason) almost helped her beat Jay Love. Her decision to support Bright was the right decision- it shouldn’t always be about party politics. Jay Love is well….not the brightest in the bunch.

I’m curious to see who it is. I’ll go with Steve French.

  • illrember

For the record, I can’t think of a republican senator that I wouldn’t vote for over Byrne…and I’m a democrat. Byrne is the worst case scenario for the entire state of Alabama.

  • 2010

interesting two posts illremember. seems like you have a screwed up version as to what is right and what is wrong in public policy. to each their own but come 2010 you may be most unhappy with harri anne out of office and byrne possible governor.

  • STAND UP FOR BAMA

What about Sen. Larry Dixon from Montgomery. I doubt he is the “candidate behind the green curtain” but who knows. He might have forgot the whippin’ Terry Everrett put on him in 1992!

If it is Sen Beason, wont he be drawing off the same voter base that Tim James is?

  • 2010

I really doubt it is Beason. I can see him running for Lt. Gov – but not Gov just yet.

  • William

So…if it’s not Beason, who is it 2010? Just curious b/c like I said, I don’t think there is a current Senator I would support over Bradley Byrne.

  • 2010

There is not one I would support over Byrne either. If Byrne gets in the race I think he will get my vote in the GOP primary. James is OK but not progressive enough for my taste.

  • illrember

2010- you are absolutely correct. If Byrne is Governor, I will be sorely disappointed in the voters of Alabama. I’m not a constituent of Harri Anne’s, but she was clearly better for the state than Jay Love. We’ll have to agree to disagree on what is right and wrong with public policy. However, I am a constituent of Senator Beason and will guarantee you that he is not a jackass.

  • FactFinder

illremember: Playing devil’s advocate, why would you be disappointed in the state electing a thinking, proven reformer and a man of integrity?

I’m curious why Byrne gets you so worked up?

  • 2010

“illremember” is lost as to who is a good candidate and who is not…anyone that thinks harri anne smith would have been a good member of congress totally lacks judgement.

in terms of beason – i doubt he will run for governor. in terms of byrne – he is a smart guy, well spoken, former state senator, current head of the postsecondary ed dept – and a proven reformer that believes in doing what it right. sounds like a good choice to me. i don’t know every detail of byrne but from what i do know – i like. he also understands education, workforce development and industrial recruitment better than any candidate I have heard…

  • William

    Byrne 2010.
