ADECA Chief Considers Run for Governor

Bill Johnson, head of ADECA, is telling people that this summer he will form an exploratory committee as he considers running for the Republican nomination for Governor in 2010.

Also, this item (with emphasis added) is from today’s Cullman Times Community Calendar section (link not available):

The Cullman County Republicans will meet at 8 a.m. for buffet breakfast (dutch treat) with meeting at 8:45 a.m. Speakers will be Bill Johnson, director for ADECA, possible 2010 candidate for governor; and Kenneth Kilgo, mayor of West Point and director of local Red Cross, possible 2010 candidate.

Johnson ran against John Ashcroft for U.S. Senator from Missouri in 1994, and his unusual background would no doubt liven up the race.

Incidentally, the Cullman-area rumor is that Kilgo (mentioned above in the calendar item) will run as a Republican against Democratic incumbent James Fields in state House District 12.

I’ve known Bill Johnson for several years. He’s been to our county to speak on a number of occasions and helped us more than any other person in state government. He has a real heart for our rural areas. I think one would do well to learn the facts of his ‘unusual background.’ Unusual is not a bad thing. We got on the subject of travel one evening and he shared a few examples of countries he’s been to. But that’s not something to be ashamed of–that’s something to be proud of. I inquired about the taxes and running before on another ticket. He never promoted or believed in ‘legalizing marijuana or prostitution’ as you say. I’d love to see him on the ticket and hope his research shows he would have support!

smart guy and through ADECA he has a lot of connections to local leaders. however, i don’t see him going far in the gov race. no name recognition and no money.

  • princeliberty

No suprise more folks jumping in.

    Nature hates vacaum.

Oh, I could see him jumping. Riley likes Johnson.

Riiley could be behind Johnson. If so, plenty of money.

Johnson is no more unknown that Byrne.

And has a more appealing personality.

  • Bowell Larron

Good luck finding people who don’t have nice things to say about Bill Johnson. People may or may not end up wanting him for Governor, but I don’t see anyone trashing this guy. Watch for him to be the Huckabee of the Republican side.

  • J Jenkins in comment #1,

In that 2006 post, I passed along what was in a TV ad and what was also reported at the time.

Since you are doubtful, I even looked it up for you. The Birmingham News on September 15, 2006, in an article called “ADWATCH An analysis of political ads” that appeared on page 4-C, has this from Kim Chandler:

Johnson did run for the U.S. Senate in 1994 as a Libertarian. [...] Johnson’s anti-government platform in the Senate campaign included legalizing drugs and prostitution. Johnson has said he no longer advocates those and other anti-government views. Those were the positions of the Libertarian Party, he said.

However, if Mr. Johnson would like to go on the record saying those things are not true (as you believe they are not), I would happily report that. I do think those things are unusual. You said “unusual is not a bad thing,” as if you and I disagree on that point, and we do not. I never said otherwise.

I can’t recall anyone who knows Bill Johnson saying anything but very nice things about him.

  • William

You can count me as someone who knows Bill Johnson and can’t think of anything nice to say about him. He would be a TERRIBLE candidate.

  • Larry Boy

Go to his website – http://www.billjohnson.org. Very odd.

  • princeliberty

Johnson better watch out for the Harrie Ann Steamroller.

There’s got to be a big desire for a true Republican heavyweight to get in. And no one can question that
Smith’s presence would loom large in this race.

his pic on the ADECA website kinda bothers me

  • Rusty Shackleford

    nevermind, billjohnson.com is way scarier.

post 8, i assume those comments were tongue in cheek. otherwise, you need a serious dose of reality.

To quote Barney Fife “He’s a NUT, Andy!”

  • Willie

After reviewing billjohnson.com, I think Bill Johnson loves Bill Johnson!

  • princeliberty

Hey 2010, can you dispute that Smith has some serious weight she can add to the primary?

  • dylan

ok, that “copperfield” header on the website seals the deal for me. he ought to change that, creepy.

  • Christy Jenkins

Willie/Rusty–looks like the guy at billjohnson.com is a sales manager in Chicago. I’m sure he’s thrilled with the hits you’re driving to his site. And the information on billjohnson.org is all about Bill’s travels around the world since he was, looks like about 20 or 25. How ’bout looking at his current/recent accomplishments? I’m thrilled he may be in the race! And btw, I have jr high students that don’t act as immature as some of the comments about Mr. Johnson. Grow up!

  • Dan B.

    BillJohnson.com…
I think you are reviewing a different site and guy all together. Also, if a website header has this much influence on a governors election maybe I should run! I am a great website designer! Sounds good to me… Lets just not worry about the trivial stuff, (beliefs, values, or what this guy stands for…) nah… thats just silly…
Lets just vote for the guy with the best website!

    ;0)

Who’s a bigger nut case – Bill Johnson or Kay Ivey? Or Troy King?

  • princeliberty

Troy King is the worst. One the lowest characters to crawl upon the scene in Alabama.

  • 2010

All I can say is, as a Republican, I hope Luther runs against Troy in the GOP primary. We don’t need Troy anywhere on the ticket come November. I am sure Ronnie Gilley will give him a job once he leaves office.

  • Scorpius

“Who’s a bigger nutcase?” Don’t be so hasty as to remove yourself from contention, No. You’d get my vote hands down.

  • SamfordDem

Kilgo will have a tough time should he challenge James Fields. Of course, he is better than the last GOP nominee Wayne Willingham in one way: he’s the director of the local Red Cross, not the local group that burns crosses.

  • Would Alabama have the hottest first lady in its history?

  • truthsleuth

Bill Johnson is better suited for an Obama cabinet post considering he didn’t pay his taxes for 10 years.

I don’t see him as viable. He won one term on the Birmingham City Council, ran for mayor and lost, and lost his council seat. Riley again saved him and gave him a job.

  • SaundraM

I have spent a lot of time looking at Bill Johnson and wondering if he would be a good candidate. I have come to the conclusion that Alabama needs a strong man like Mr. Johnson to be our Gov. I have looked as his accomplishments and past experiences and realized that he would be a GREAT govenor. To the people talking about the websites, anyone willing to bash someone’s pictures obviously can not find anything else bad to say about Mr. Johnson! Since when have we started voting for best webpage design? Bill Johnson has my vote 100%!

  • James

Bill Johnson has done more for Alabama than any other candidate in the race. He has served our state well, and his life is a reflection of his values in action. He even worked in South Africa to end racial Apartheid. He has my vote!

  • William

Please name one thing that Bill Johnson has done for Alabama.

  • 2010

william, as the head of ADECA doesn’t bill johnson go around the state and hand out checks? does that count? hmmmm, sounds like some of our state legislators that go around handing out our tax money as “community grants” so they can get a photo op and take credit for something they didn’t really do.

  • jhillman

One thing he’s done is an outstanding job working with the Blackbelt Action Commission. He took us from 50 volunteers to over 700. And he got an award for his work with non-profits. And he works with a program to help former inmates get back in to society as productive citizens. And he served on our task force to bring a new business into Evergreen. And those are just the things I’ve been involved in with him. Ooops, sorry, you only asked for one.

  • R T Baker

hallelujah! been waiting for Johnson to announce for weeks now. glad we finally have a candidate we can get behind!!!

  • Danny J

Amen! I agree! This is the type of man we need in the Governor’s chair!

  • Phillip Wayne

    Bill Johnson is a “Psychotic”.

Five years ago, on Election Night 2004, Bill Johnson showed up at my house and threatened to “put me in the hospital” over God Knows What.

He was completely irrational and acted like he was “possessed”. I had to call the Police Department and filed Misdemeanor Trespassing and Harrassment Charges against him.

The Police and Sheriff’s Department warned him about this type of “behavior” in the future.

This guy is a “Sick Puppy”.
