First of all, congratulations on what appears to be an overall pretty well-attended event nationwide. While I don’t agree with any of this anger or fury, you all were able to organize a solid showing with very limited resources. And I commend you for your efforts.
I must however, disagree with the point you all are trying to make. I feel you’re ignoring the current mess we’re in for the opportunity to score some pretty cheap and insignificant political points. And while I hear you all stating that this is not a partisan issue, I don’t remember any Tea Parties during the Bush administration when the national debt doubled or during the Reagan years when it tripled.
Also, I’m curious as to what benchmark you all have set for exactly the amount of government spending you can stand for. Is there some beacon of capitalistic light out there other than the U.S. for which we all aspire to emulate? I’m unaware of another country possessing a fully-developed economy such as ours that spends less per GDP than we do.
So while I fully understand not wanting to see that change too dramatically, one must take into account the fact that we are facing the most severe economic crisis of this generation. And while we’ve all heard the anger-inspiring stories of social system abuse, there is an abundance of horror-stories from the opposite point of view to choose from as well.
And I bet damn near every single soul at these events has benefited in some way or another from the very system that you all despise.
To hear the female Montgomery organizer on television state that she feels our country is being “raped” by “socialists” three months into a new administration is where you’ve really crossed the line over into fanatical-ism. I suppose I’d advocate here for a more civil tone and I’d also extend that to the other side of the aisle when “fascism” can become the buzzword of choice.
At the end of the day, social upheaval really benefits no one regardless of the issue. I urge everyone to consider the importance of the stability of our public institutions. Whether or not you like it, our institutions function, generally. One trip to a floundering third-world country such as Iraq ought to shore up anyone’s doubts about that.
Regardless, job well done on assembling the masses, but other than sounding bitter about government in general like about 30% of individuals always do, was there something else we were supposed to gather from this party?
Anonymous #3, I’m glad that no one bothered to tell those colonists in Boston in 1773 that social upheaval really benefits no one regardless of the issue. The same goes for the founders of this nation.
Social upheaval? This was political protest not some roiting mob.
And a Republic needs it people to hold its officials feet to the fire.
One of the reasons this is happening now, it we had a election and new President rather that changing the bad policies of Bush, is heading in the same direction even more.
Bush grew government like wild and walked on the Constitution.
Obama is growing government even faster and has even greater contempt for the Constitution than Bush did.
Prince, not sure where you get your info, but I hardly think Obama has a contempt for the constitution that rivals the prior administrations. I would be interested to see your sources, however.
I am not a teabagger, but I heard that there were some pretty incredible speaches given at the Tea Party in Trussville. I heard Jeremy Walker (Chair, Capitol City Young Repubs) gave a stump speech that stirred the crowd like no one has since Wallace last took to a podium.
When will the next tea parties be? I missed this one because of Wednesday Church.
