Don’t get the unimpressive Segall rollout. Apparently, just a release, no public event, not even an online announcement. A friend in the Segall circles tells me he put out the release to stem rumors that he was not running, but this is a very lackluster opening shot from a guy who came reasonably close to winning.

being in the hole really doesn’t mean anything. the money doesn’t have to get paid back first. although rogers is in the hole about 25 if i’m not mistaken.

advantage Segall – Rogers having less than 35k in the bank is definitely one of the weakest of any incumbent on either side

And as of 12/31/08 (most recent one found), the fec.gov site shows Segall about $100 k in the hole. Looks like both will hustling strong for money and will probably be very fiscally conservative in their run.

Rogers’ 1st quarter numbers just came out on the fec website. $34k cash on hand. Not a high number.

From everything I’ve seen, Obama hurt Segall in East Alabama. With Obama’s numbers at 35% with whit males now, I think Segall will be in much better shape if those numbers hold or grow. And, contrary to Obama, Davis has not been, and cannot be, packaged by the GOP as a Muslim, Socialist, Outsider sent to Alabama by our enimies to destroy the State from the inside out. Davis is a known quantity, and those who believe his down-ballot effect will mirror Obama’s underestimate Davis’ strength in rural Alabama.

Bottom line, Segall has a good shot in 2010 if economy hols or improves.

Interesting. His “I am a fiscal conservative” harkens key Bright and Griffith points in their Blue Dog wins. Wonder if that’s the tact Josh is trying this go around?

If Obama tanks, bye bye Josh. Interestingly, I don’t think Rogers will fall if Obama does well, the tendency won’t be to oust the incumbent. I think Rogers will have to seriously misstep here.

Segall will do better than he did last time. He started that campaign with absolutely zero name ID, beat fundraising expectations, and still outperformed the top of the ticket by several points. I would not be surprised to see the Dem nominee for governor actually win AL 3, even if the Dem nominee is Davis. That will make a victory by Segall that much more possible.
