Josh Segall Announces 2010 Candidacy for AL-03

Alabama with the 3rd Congressional District highlightedDemocrat Josh Segall ends the speculation and announces his candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District in 2010.  Segall was the Democratic nominee for the seat in 2008 and lost the general election to Republican incumbent Mike Rogers.

He had been mentioned as a possible candidate for Secretary of State; the 2010 Big List has been adjusted accordingly.

Lilly Ledbetter had been mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate for AL-03. That looked unlikely from this vantage point, and with Segall in that race again, it looks even more unlikely.

JOSH SEGALL ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR CONGRESS

IN ALABAMA’S 3RD CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

MONTGOMERY, ALJosh Segall, the 2008 Democratic nominee for Congress in Alabama’s 3rd district, announced today that he will mount a campaign against Mike Rogers (R-Saks) in the 2010 Congressional election.

“It’s time for a new direction. I am a fiscal conservative who will work to create and attract 21st Century jobs to east Alabama so that hardworking people can get ahead,” said Segall.

Alabama is suffering under irresponsible policies that bail out greedy executives who created this mess and leave hardworking Alabama families holding the bag. Rogers supported the Wall Street bailout, but did nothing for Main Street Alabama. He voted to send Alabama jobs overseas, when what we needed was a plan to create good jobs at home. It’s time to stand up to special interest politics and put Alabama families first once again,” said Segall.

“Rural Alabama has been suffering for a long time and this recession has made it so even fewer of our children can live where they grew up.  Rural areas all over the country need to be reinvigorated. I will work with Members of Congress who represent similar districts to make rural areas strong again.”

Segall shocked political onlookers last year when he raised almost $1 million and garnered over 46% of the vote against Rogers. This strong showing came despite a late-entry into the race with just a few months for the first time candidate to assemble a team, develop a fundraising base and build a district-wide grassroots operation. Many political commentators felt that Segall would have prevailed but for lack of time to get his message out

ABOUT JOSH SEGALL

Josh Segall was born and raised in Montgomery and is proud to say that four generations of his family have made Alabama their home. Before becoming a lawyer, Segall started Home Grown Alabama, an organization that opened new markets for local farmers. He is engaged to Quin Evans who he will marry later this year.

With Arthr Davis on the ticket, no way a conservative democrat can win in 2010.

If he gets a better field team together, he just may succeed this time. I think that the old field person is working campaigns in North Alabama somewhere. Staff up quick Josh.

Should say, “He is engaged to Quin Evans WHOM he will marry later this year.” If proper use of pronouns smacks too much of book-larnin’, then just re-phrase it: “Josh plans to wed his fiance Quin Evans later this year.”

  • 2010

he had his shot to win in 08. the GOP was stuck with an un popular president, a piss poor economy, a less than exciting presidential nominee, and biggest of all in josh’s favor, there was a huge obama driven minority turnout that voted straight ticket dem in 2008. and with all of that – he still did not win. if he thinks the atmosphere will be better for him in 2010 he is wrong. in fact, it will likely be the opposite. he is wasting his time and money.

He should have a better chance this time around, lay offs got people hurting and they see little results from the various measures so far.

Lets hope he remembers what happened to Cavil and loses the “gotta plan for this and a plan for that”. Though the announcement does not give much hope.

As a voter in the district, I give fair warning: calls to the home will lead to deselection.

segall will end up being the next scott simmons, a perennial loser for the same seat.

  • politiki

Is Mallory working for him? That will be a tell tale sign of if DC or Montgomery INsiders think he can win.

  • For the 20th time : It is Dave Mowery – not Mallory

Segall is a mystery to me: he had a perfect combination of issues to beat Rogers and failed to come within six points. He raised huge amounts of cash early but seemed to run out of money at the end. He needs Obama to have approval ratings with white voters that run at least in the thirties and he has a stronger stake in Artur Davis being a strong nominee than anybody not on Davis’ payroll.

Segall will do better than he did last time. He started that campaign with absolutely zero name ID, beat fundraising expectations, and still outperformed the top of the ticket by several points. I would not be surprised to see the Dem nominee for governor actually win AL 3, even if the Dem nominee is Davis. That will make a victory by Segall that much more possible.

Interesting that his press rlease has no contact information. I guess it would be bad to have listed Josh’s Ego as the contact?

Put another way, Rogers is breathing a sigh of relief.

  • As I have on other occasions, I removed the contact info from the release.

But if you’d like to be in touch…

  • Von Buskirk

Interesting. His “I am a fiscal conservative” harkens key Bright and Griffith points in their Blue Dog wins. Wonder if that’s the tact Josh is trying this go around?

If Obama tanks, bye bye Josh. Interestingly, I don’t think Rogers will fall if Obama does well, the tendency won’t be to oust the incumbent. I think Rogers will have to seriously misstep here.

Ask Wayne Parker, how you do after “almost” susprising a Congressman. Most second tries don’t do near as well as the first.

  • Lyn Johnson

Segall is the Wayne Parker of East Alabama.

  • Baudrillard

From everything I’ve seen, Obama hurt Segall in East Alabama. With Obama’s numbers at 35% with whit males now, I think Segall will be in much better shape if those numbers hold or grow. And, contrary to Obama, Davis has not been, and cannot be, packaged by the GOP as a Muslim, Socialist, Outsider sent to Alabama by our enimies to destroy the State from the inside out. Davis is a known quantity, and those who believe his down-ballot effect will mirror Obama’s underestimate Davis’ strength in rural Alabama.

Bottom line, Segall has a good shot in 2010 if economy hols or improves.

  • Hedgerow

Yay, another two years of a little kid who’s never held a real job lying about Mike Rogers’ votes.

  • Frances

Being a lawyer isn’t a real job? You wanna say that to a DA or a judge?

  • jpo

Rogers’ 1st quarter numbers just came out on the fec website. $34k cash on hand. Not a high number.

  • walt moffett

And as of 12/31/08 (most recent one found), the fec.gov site shows Segall about $100 k in the hole.

Looks like both will hustling strong for money and will probably be very fiscally conservative in their run.

  • being in the hole really doesn’t mean anything. the money doesn’t have to get paid back first. although rogers is in the hole about 25 if i’m not mistaken.

advantage Segall – Rogers having less than 35k in the bank is definitely one of the weakest of any incumbent on either side

Don’t get the unimpressive Segall rollout. Apparently, just a release, no public event, not even an online announcement. A friend in the Segall circles tells me he put out the release to stem rumors that he was not running, but this is a very lackluster opening shot from a guy who came reasonably close to winning.

  • William

Perhaps he’s running for debt retirement rather than Congress.
