Earl Hilliard Jr. Announcing AL-07 Candidacy

Alabama with 7th Congressional District highlightedState Representative Earl Hilliard Jr. (D – Birmingham) is announcing his candidacy this morning for the Congressional seat once held by his father. In 2002, Artur Davis defeated Earl Hilliard Sr. on his second attempt but is giving up the seat to run for Governor in 2010.

It could be a crowded field:

Birmingham lawyer Terri Sewell already has announced she is running, and a host of both county and state lawmakers — including Sens. Rodger Smitherman and Bobby Singleton, Jefferson County Commissioner Shelia Smoot and former Selma Mayor James Perkins — have expressed interest in possibly making runs.

State Sen. Hank Sanders has also received encouragement to run for the seat – including from his wife. Rose Sanders was overheard at Selma’s annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee last month asking Joe Reed to talk her husband into the race to succeed Artur Davis.

If Sanders ran for Congress and Bedford ran for Governor, how many Republicans would give them money to get them OUT?

  • What a terrible list so far!

I wish Artur would just stay put. He’s young and prominent on the judiciary committee. In terms of helping AL in the long run, he could’ve worked his way to the top.

    What a depressing list.

Earl, Jr was the Freshman Legislator of the Year for 2008 – seems to me he is more accomplished than anyone in the field.

  • I was thinking the same thing politiki. About the only one of the democrat troublemakers that are left thats not rumored to be leaving their current job is Lowell.

I have some friends over in Hale County who might just vote for Bobby Singleton if he runs for congress just to get him further away where he might be less dangerous to them.

  • (without looking at a district map) Could Phil Poole run … and get out of the senate?!

I have some friends in Hale County that probably voted for Singleton without knowing about it. LOL!!

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
