Ron Sparks to Announce 2010 Plans on Friday

Ron SparksState Agricultural Commissioner Ron Sparks will announce his 2010 campaign plans on Friday, April 3, in Birmingham at the noon meeting of the Downtown Democrats, according to email from the group. My email inbox also tells me that he will announce at 3:30 in Huntsville at the Madison Country Courthouse.

We expect that Sparks will announce for the Lt. Governor’s race. If so, all eyes will turn to Democratic Lt. Governor Jim Folsom. Will Folsom follow through and announce his intention to run for Governor, as has been expected? Or will he ultimately cede the nomination for Governor to Congressman Artur Davis and decide to run again for Lt. Governor against a Sparks primary challenge? (Or would Sparks then decide to run for, say, Congress?)

If you are not paying attention it might be easy to underestimate Sparks’ base of support. He has been very proactive as Ag Commissioner and is strong in rural areas even, at least to a degree, across party lines.

As in other posts, I predict Sparks announces for Gov. He believes his strength in rural areas is his path to winning the nomination. Sparks is betting he will have an easier race against Davis than Folsom, and he may be right about that. Folsom will stay on at Lt. Gov.

please ron, run for governor. you can win, promise.

  • I just checked the weather and it is going to be cloudy on Friday in Birmingham and windy in Huntsville so there is a chance it could be canceled :)

Not this crap again. IF he actually does announce his (no doubt) long-held conviction that he could do great things for Alabama as [insert name of office here], can we assume it is a de facto announcement of Folsom’s intentions?

Yawn….followed by a roll of the eyes.

Sparks posted at the Daily Kos hate site, not long after Kos said “screw them” about Americans killed in Iraq.

    No Sparks.

  • ?

He can’t announce that he’s going to primary a sitting Dem, especially one that’s so popular in his own party… Right?

So… unless Folsom is planning an announcement soon that Sparks knows about, Sparks has to be planning to announce for Governor. ??

Is this an April Fool joke?

Regardless of Political Stripes Vote Tomorrow

As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]

My Time is Up

I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]

TRYIN’ TO CATCH UP

I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night.  I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days.  I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
