AG Troy King to Run for Re-election in 2010

Troy King shakes hands after his announcementBefore a receptive crowd of 150 or more at tonight’s meeting of the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans at the Fox & Hound at the Colonnade on 280, Troy King announced his intention to run for re-election to the Attorney General spot in 2010. FWIW, many of those in attendance haven’t been young Republicans for many years.

With his wife and three children by his side, he said he was tempted to run for the open Governor’s seat, but added, “Alabama citizens are far safer than they were just five years ago, but not as safe as they should be… I made a promise five years ago to stand up for all of you, and tonight I renew that promise.” He is “extremely proud” of his record and results. “Tonight, I am proud to announce my intention to seek re-election” to the Attorney General spot.

After his brief remarks, he indicated he would not linger because it was a school night. He closed, “Tonight my prayers are the same as they are every night, that God’s blessings will be on our party, our friends, our state, and our country.”

While his family slipped out, King stayed at least a bit for handshakes and photos.

  • Great to see you (from across the room) tonight Danny.

The speech was warm and well written on I thought and I fully expected him to be out of there rather quickly.

What I was surprised at was there where zero press (that I saw) at the event.

  • Charles Henderson

Your campaign is in great shape when you have to announce your re-election campaign by dragging your wife and three young kids up 65 to a bar to a crowd that included no reporters.

  • M

Well, we have heard that he likes his Republicans young…

  • Tom Davis

The room was packed and the crowd was upbeat. I saw some of the top law firms in town represented as well as some of the top Republican operatives.

  • Andy

Were there any Republican elected officials there to show their support?

  • No

#5 excellent point. Troy has political leprosy.

#4 I noticed that you had to tell us the crowd was “upbeat” at a CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCEMENT.

  • Baudrillard

I wonder why his “prayers are … that God’s blessings will be on our party [and] our friends.” Aren’t we supposed to pray for EVERYBODY, even our enemies?

I don’t understand why only the GOP and friends of the GOP get TK’s prayers.

  • JD

I found it interesting that no TV media coverage was reported.

  • Tom Davis

You can always count on alot of posts when Troy King is mentioned.

I guess it sells alot of “Newspapers” and people want to know.

  • viability

Troy sells papers alright – tabloids.

  • CC Dollar

while i do not agree with every stand Mr. King takes I do applaud him for a job well done…as for the rumors to do with his sexual orentation, they have played out and all of us with a brain know where they originated..until i see a better candidate for the job i will continue to support him..

The lack of media shows once again that the Bham press is out of the loop when it comes to state politics. Makes you wonder why the King campaign chose Bham — Montgomery is always a better draw for statewide media since all the major dailies have a reporter in the capital.

  • Anon

I’m sure CC Dollar thinks King is doing a “job well done”:

Our sources say questions were asked about King’s relationships with various people associated with gambling, including Ronnie Gilley. Gilley is developing Country Crossing, a country music attraction in Dothan which is said to include in its plans electronic bingo. At issue, according to our sources, is why the Attorney General’s office prosecuted some electronic bingo operators in the state and not others.

  • Comment number #12 makes a great point.

It was a major failure on the news media outlets to not be there.

Being a GBYR I am very glad he choose our venue to make the announcement. It shows the hard work put in by the GBYR Leadership has paid off.

  • CC Dollar

#13…get back to me when the investigation is over….if king is found to be guilty of any wrongdoing i will congratulate you and anyone involved in bringing it to light.

  • viability

Jeff, I think most people do know and appreciate that you and your folks work hard.

You are also right that B’ham media do not turn out well for political announcements. I also think that B’ham media really dislikes Troy and will not cover anything he does that they see as self-serving.

The B’ham media is in enemy mode about Troy King.

  • William

Although generally supportive of the GBYR, don’t you think that the president of the club being paid by Troy as his campaign manager had something to do with the announcement venue?

  • William – your point is correct. I am sure that Chris had alot to do with it. With that said Chris is not the only person on the campaign staff and it could have easily been overturned by others.

Attorney General Troy King choose to make the announcement with the GBYRs and for that I am thankful.

  • No

It is a waste of GOP resources to try to prop up the mortally wounded careers of Troy King and Kay Ivey.

It is time to support others.

  • J

Any candidate who makes his announcement (especially a sitting AG for re-election) at a young republican club is struggling. YR’s carry little influence.

  • Folsom4ever

Democrats are licking their chops. Polling data shows any D beats King. Only a small group of Rs support King, like the ones who have State contracts to provide legal services!

  • anon

There will be a primary opponent to king, someone who can probably win. And who will beat whatever dem, especially with artur at top of dem ballot. Even turnham conceded that davis drags their ballot down, oh dems are in big trouble

  • Anonymous

King and Ivey are both walking dead. King will not make it out of a primary, and may well be indicted. Ivey is out of the governor’s race, and Folsom may be too.

  • IknowIknow

Why is Davis dragging the democratic ticket? I am lost.

  • 2010

CC Dollar – I am glad you sing the praises of ronnie gilley and troy king. throw in harri anne smith and you have one helluva match. exactly the kind of folks we do not need in politics or influencing it. thanks for tying them together though….not that we all didn’t know it. sad….just sad.

i hope someone will run against king in the primary. i agree that he is wounded to say the least…

  • Anon

Luther Strange will beat King 2 to 1 in the Primary.

  • Rightside

#22 – HA! HA! HA! That cracks me up. Seriously what polling are you looking at? Give me ONE strong Dem who could beat King in the race? EVERY poll I have looked at shows King with better numbers than anyone else – Rep or Dem.

I believe that, that is why SO many people are out to try to get him. Maybe we all don’t agree with EVERYTHING that he does – but I feel that ALOT of people consider him a HUGE threat !

I find it very ammusing that this announcement was considered by some to be a failure because there was no media there to report on it. Meaning that no one will be talking about it? Hmm. It sure is getting alot of cover here……

  • Hoss Man

Those who speculate on Luther running for AG must think that Luther is short on smarts. Why would he want to be AG when he can be governor. The Republican primary for governor is wide open for Luther. If he can muster the same financial support that he did for Lt. Gov. and if he will run the kind of campaign that he did in the previous primary, he will waltz into the governor’s office. There is zero charisma and excitement about Kay, Bradley, Tim, and Roy. Luther wins it hands down.

  • molly dulac

hello. either way, if you run for gov, or ag, i,ll vote for you. we are all sick of riley,s ego. telling the tx payers we can,t vote on charitable bingo and lottery, we live in a new day, and we need jobs i vote for troy king, mollywoodimports.com
