Troy King to Announce 2010 Plan on Thursday

Troy KingRepublican Attorney General Troy King will announce his plans for 2010 at the Greater Birmingham Young Republicans meeting Thursday night, Jeff Vreeland of the state GOP Executive Committee tells the Political Parlor.

King was appointed by Governor Bob Riley in 2004 to the AG position to fill a vacancy created by Bill Pryor’s resignation. He has since been elected to a full term and is eligible to serve another full term.

King was once believed to be a strong contender in the 2010 Governor’s race, but you have read here (and here) that the King Team has been pointing toward a re-election campaign for Attorney General.

We’ll know this week.

That’s too bad. King would have been by far the strongest Republican to run against Davis or Folsom, assuring the governorship stayed in Republican hands. Ivey, Byrne, and James are well intended, but poorly equipped.

  • No

Hoss that is just not realistic. King is highly vulnerable on issues of competency, ethics, poor judgment (personal and political) and he has an enormous cloud of scandal that he really hasn’t begun to address. He just is a nonstarter for Governor.

If I was a Democrat, running against King would be a gift from God.

  • Hoss Man

No – I won’t disagree with your points, but I disagree with your conclusion. King fits snugly into the mold of Governor Patterson’s new book, “Nobody but the People.” I have seen King speak to the “common folks” who have no interest in the Montgomery political insider scene, and he strongly connects with them. For his “weaknesses” to hurt him with the voters, they must be exploited state wide in paid advertising, and that won’t happen. Oh well, it doesn’t matter anyway if Danny is right. He will coast into his second term as AG. I will be voting for the strongest of the weaklings – Bradley Byrne.

  • Tom Davis

I have seen the same Hoss Man. Troy King connects well with people. In addition, he works the crowd as well as anyone out there.

  • Baudrillard

And, yet, something rings hollow with his glad-handing. He can “appear” to work the crowd, but having been in that crowd, he has a hard time connecting with voters on an individual level. He wants to appear to connect with the “common folk,” but just can’t bridge that gap.

  • viability

Troy has no shot at governor, and reelection may be difficult. Troy has enormous negatives, and he hasn’t even had the first negative ad run against him.

It would be a close call right now whose negative ratings are higher – Ivey’s or Troy’s – and Kay has just had a political bomb explode at ther feet. That shows how tough Troy’s road would be.

And don’t forget that every editorial writer in the state and every political reporter in Montgomery thinks Troy is a joke – and they will write that. Sure, Alabamians don’t pay much attention to editorials – but the steady drumbeat of negative articles and editorials WILL have an affect. They already HAVE had an affect.

It’s just too much to overcome, and it will definitely affect how much money Troy can raise. (In fact, it has already affected Troy’s choice of election: he could not get the sort of fundraising commitments he needed to run for governor.)

There is just too much “out there” for the serioius money to give Troy the backing he would have to have. He’ll be fortunate to win reelection.

  • If anyone wants to join the GBYRs for the announcement, we meet at the Fox and Hound on Highway 280 at 6:00pm on Thursday.

No way King could win the Gov race. He will be lucky to get by with out a tough GOP primary race for Atty General. If King thought he could win Gov – believe me – he would run. He knows better…we all do.

  • viability

#8 you are exactly right when you say Troy “would run for governor if he could.” If he could raise the money, etc. he would run for governor in a heartbeat . . .he just has been told he has no chance this cycle. He’s still deluded enough to try but he can’t print his own money.

  • Andy

I think the only question is if Bob Riley is going to recruit someone to get beaten by Troy in the primary.

  • viability

If it’s Luther Strange against Troy Luther will beat TK . . .but Troy has enough name rec to beat a second-string Republian (ala Mark Montiel).

Luther seems to keep flirting with a run for governor. That’s a bad idea. The money that backed Luther for Lite Gov is with Bradley Byrne for Gov. AG is his best shot.

  • JD

When did Montiel get brought up from Single A?

King would have been a strong contender despite the animosity Republican insiders and newspapers have for him. But he lost the opportunity to consolidate the Religious right when he failed to knock down, or even address, the rumors about his personal life last year. There may be nothing to the rumors but for about a week they circulated and went unanswered. That is a fatal error in the political world.

The reality, Byrne is the Republican frontrunner now and with Ivey badly wounded and Hawkins seeming to be out, Byrne may be on the verge of being the odds on favorite on the GOP side.

  • 2010

luther strange should run against troy king for AG. Ivey should run for Lt. Gov.

and in terms of Gov? all i can say is, we all missed out when jo bonner decided against it. he would have been great.
now??? tim james, bradley byrne ? who knows who it will be…

  • Rambling thoughts

Looks like a storm brewing on the horizon for the AG. I also hear his current “body” guards have some interesting stories to tell as well…….

  • No

#15, that is a really big story. If the grand jury indicts, it won’t just be The Fat Lady singing for the Boy’s career, it’ll be The Weathergirls blasting out “It’s Raining Men” while Troy and his “entourage” of young men boogie their way towards a federal prison camp . . .

  • William

    Troy is done.

  • jeremy

    Anything out of TK today?
