Fishing Expeditions

Alice MartinThe word in Alice Martin’s circle is that she asked Sen. Jeff Sessions to support her for a one-year extension in her role as U.S. Attorney to assist in the prosecution of Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford. She also reportedly has expressed interest in the judgeship made vacant by Greg Shaw’s election to the state Supreme Court.

U.S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the U.S. President and typically offer their resignations at the change in presidential administrations.

one year extension . . . laughable. This is not Patrick Fitzgerald we are talking about.

If she stays on for one more year, Alabama Dems will flip out. That would be a major assist to Folsom in the Dem primary.

I wouldn’t write her off yet. After you get past the blown Siegelman case in 04, the blown Scrushy case in 05, knowingly prosecuting an innocent man – Alex Latifi, committing perjury in an EEOC case, and currently being under investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility at DOJ, she seems like an ideal candidate for a judgeship.

Who else is being considered for that judgeship that Shaw is leaving on Jan 20?

  • Langford is probably hoping she will stay on to head up his prosecution. He’s less likely to be convicted that way.

Alice Martin serves at the pleasure of the Obama administration, not Jeff Sessions. This must be a joke of sorts. I know of people who have already been asked to take her place. She is going, going…..gone.

good point, Kathy – that one was humorous!

She continues to exercise excellent judgement, its hard to imagine to anyone that would have more influence on Obama’s decisions than will Jeff Sessions. I can hear the meeting now, “hello boy, you remember me, I’m the one who said I thought the Klan was a good bunch of people until I found out they smoked pot.”

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
