RollCall reports this afternoon that Republican Alabama Congressman Spencer Bachus will keep his position as top Republican on the House Financial Services Committee. RollCall and Politico had been reporting that House Minority Leader John Boehner wanted Bachus out as ranking member of the committee, and Don Young (R – Alaska) out as ranking member of the Natural Resources Committee. The Republican Steering Committee was expected to have a “no confidence” vote on Bachus and Young today.
Some Republicans had been unhappy with Bachus’ early handling of the financial bailout negotiations; despite being the ranking member of the committee he was largely cut out of the process and replaced in the negotiations by Roy Blunt.
However, instead of being removed as ranking member of the committee, Bachus emerges from the meeting today with his role intact. RollCall quotes Boehner as saying, “He’s my friend. And we’re going to work together to resolve what’s going on in the committee.”

I guess he ain’t running for Governor now?
i still for the life of me can’t figure out why any republican voted for the first bailout. almost cost rogers his seat. makes no sense to vote for this as the minority. it is one of those things that you leverage as the minority. oh well, worked out for bachus this time.
Rogers knew it might have and he was ok with that.
Bachus is a complete joke. Look for him to get primary opposition next go round. A lot of repubs have grown disgruntled and disenchanted with his continuing performance in Congress.
He should have honored his commitment to term limit himself several years ago. He’s going to get run out like Gary White and Jack Biddle did.

At least he supports the Fair Tax…
I take umbrage at some of those remarks. I have always found Congressman Bachus a good Congressman.
I could give some examples, but space will not allow it.
He is a bright bulb. He is modest about his accomplishments. But, he has served his District well. We are grateful that he is our Congressman.
He has risen to the top in Commitee important to this district.
I appreciate him and his staff.

I really wish anonymous comments weren’t allowed. It really takes the teeth out of the cheap shots to know that there’s not even a name of any sort to attach a comment to.
