State Representative Alvin Holmes is imploring you to vote for “Barack Obama and the straight Democratic ticket.” Or, if not you, at least the listeners of radio stations like WKXN / WKXK (Greenville, Montgomery, Pine Hill) where this ad is airing. oh beautiful, for spacious skies…wow. i want to get that up on every radio station in alabama, NOW!!! talk about moving, i was waiting to hear “I’m bobby bright, and i approved this message…i hope you do too” at the end, but no such luck.
Well, it looks like Alvin was wrong when he thought Obama was not electable. I think many people in Alabama will be surprised to see a much narrower than expected margin of victory for McCain in Alabama. But, it matters not, as most of the rest of the country is going blue. Post 1, perhaps you should start practicing now to say “President Obama.”
first, i believe this is an “only in alabama” type ad, because surely there’s no one else on the planet like this cat. second “take yo children and granchildren…” hmm, sounds like a little voter fraud is already beginning, what if “yo children and granchildren” aren’t old enough to vote, alvin? ah, hell, take em anyway, who cares as long as they vote democrat right? what a joke this guy is. and last, i put forth that this is a complete form of racism, it goes both ways alvin, you are asking folks to vote because it is their duty as black folks to vote for a black man, and that is racism. to alvin, it ain’t about qualifications, it’s about color.
No party or individual has the corner on trying to pander with a simple, emotional argument for or against a candidate. For example, consider “He’s a socialist.” Or “He’s a Muslim.” Or “He’s a terrorist.”
At least if Holmes is guilty of using a simple emotional appeal for Obama, he is doing it with an actual fact, that Obama is a black man. As opposed to emotional appeals against Obama that aren’t even based in fact.
uh, robert,i’d say the socialist label is based in fact. You’ve certainly seen the “spread the wealth” video right? That is socialism.

Racism – Prejudice or discrimination based on an individual’s race; can be expressed individually or through institutional policies or practices.
Positive actions, such as supporting a candidate for office, cannot, by definition, be racism.
This argument that African Americans are only supporting Obama because he’s black is, of course, bull. Kerry, Clinton, and hundreds of other white Democratic candidates have had the same levels of support from the African American community. It’s not about race, it’s about rejecting a political party that has, for more than 4 decades, seen bigotry not as a blight on the American soul which should be rejected, but as something to be fostered and exploited for political gain.
As for State Representative Holmes’ mention of bringing the children along, well, Tuesday will be a day when, for the first time ever, most Americans will be able to put aside the racial prejudices that have plagued this nation since its founding.
What that means to the African Americans, especially in Alabama, where so much violence has been wreaked, where the specter of Jim Crow still lingers in the minds of many and where the black community’s long and as yet unfinished quest for equality first began – well, I would not expect someone who mockingly writes “yo children and granchildren” like you to understand.
The rest of us, can, however, appreciate why Alabama blacks, after all they have suffered in the past and all that they still endure today, would want their “children and granchildren” to be there, to be part of this historic event in some small way – even if it’s just watching their parents cast their ballot in the local firehouse or town hall; to be able to look back one day and say “I was there when history was made, when Doctor King’s dream that an African American could be judged, “not on the color of their skin, but on the content of their character,” was finally realized by a majority of the nation.
And this white Alabamian can’t wait to be part of that as well.
Well said Commentator. It is no accident that Anonymous #3 attempts to criminalize a purely innocent get out the vote message. Taking grandchildren to vote suggests voter fraud? I don’t think so! My parents’ grandchildren are in their 20’s and 30’s and my oldest grandchild will be old enough to vote for Obama’s successor.
That aside, racist Republicans jump at every chance to suggest a criminal and evil intent to everything blacks do and then call the blacks racist when they vote for a black Democrat over a white Republican.
Lest we forget while casting aspersions on “racist Republicans,” George Wallace was a Democrat.

10, I sincerely hope that you are a hired Love staffer from out-of-state and not an Alabamian. If you are an Alabamian, I am embarrassed for you and our state. I am a white grandmother on social security, I will be voting for Obama, and my grand daughter will be with me because I want her to be a witness to this historical event.
