Check out the link below to an article entitled “McCain and Team Have Many Ties to Gambling Industry”
It makes me wonder why Jay Love would associate himself with man who clearly loves to gamble, and not just with his presidential campaign. This guy really loves to gamble and he’s been called a “founding father of Indian gambling.”
This is the first paragraph:
“Senator John McCain was on a roll. In a room reserved for high-stakes gamblers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, he tossed $100 chips around a hot craps table. When the marathon session ended around 2:30 a.m., the Arizona senator and his entourage emerged with thousands of dollars in winnings.”
The link for the whole article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/us/politics/28gambling-web.html?hp
“Only six members of Congress have received more money from the gambling industry than Mr. McCain, and five hail from the casino hubs of Nevada and New Jersey, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics dating back to 1989.”
Cummon Lovers… comment on this:
“For much of his adult life, Mr. McCain has gambled as often as once a month, friends and associates said, traveling to Las Vegas for weekend betting marathons. Former senior campaign officials said they worried about Mr. McCain’s patronage of casinos, given the power he wields over the industry.”
This is a great story:
“He also voted twice in the last decade to give casinos tax breaks estimated to cost the government more than $326 million over a dozen years.”
Thank goodness for poster 50 – 54. I am so glad to see them bash McCain – praise Obama – and talk about all the fwd progress that this country will make with an Obama/Biden administration. And if we don’t like it? Get the hell out. Charming.
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THE TEAM BOBBY BRIGHT HAS CHOSEN AND THE TEAM YOU SUPPORT. OBAMA, VIVIAN FIGURES AND BOBBY BRIGHT.
Give me McCAIN – JEFF SESSIONS and JAY LOVE ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. You are out of touch with district 2 if you think otherwise.
I didn’t bash McCain. I don’t throw around generic words like “liberal.” And say things like “Give me McCain any day of the week!” You know, schoolgirl stuff.
I do some research and I read. R-E-A-D. Some people will be impressed with McCain’s masterful leadership on gambling legislation. The way he used the Abramoff scandal to accomplish two goals — look like the reformer and dispatch a competing gaming interests was impressive. But other people such as Jay Love, will not want to read this and will not want people in Alabama to read this.
But progress comes. And the Internet helps to spread information, which brings progress. So people are forced to learn. They even may learn some things they do not want to learn. Like that their presidential nominee is a big fan of gambling and expanding Indian gambling.
And then the world is not so black and white. And then they may have to stop simply chanting phrases like, “Give me McCain!” And they may even, one day, realize that the world is so not-black and white, that they are better off voting for the black guy, which would just be upside down crazy to a faction of republicans (and some democrats) in Alabama. And phrases like “America — love it or leave it!” can suddenly not belong to them anymore and seem to be something to let die… like the empty word “liberal.”
“Love’s Message A Turn Off for Some”
by Bob Gambacurta
The Montgomery Independent
“…Love would be well advised to concentrate on real issues that affect people’s lives and steer clear of trying to brand his opponent as something he is not. Bright is much better known to voters in this area than Smith was. He’s hardly a wild-eyed liberal. Bright is a fiscal conservative who is pro-gun rights, pro-life and in favor of clamping down on illegal immigration.
It will be hard for Love, who voted for the biggest tax increase in Alabama history, to characterize Bright as a tax and spend liberal. All Democrats don’t march in lockstep to the beat of Nancy Pelosi’s drum. Conservative Blue Dog Democrats wield considerable influence in Congress and will wield even more as the Democratic majority grows in both houses. If Bright is elected he will be one of them.
The number one priority for our next congressman should be protecting the jobs and missions at Maxwell-Gunter AFB and Fort Rucker. Bright has already fought and won BRAC battles for Maxwell. As a member of the majority party, he’ll get better committee assignments than a minority party member. Ask yourself what that could mean for the future of Maxwell and Fort Rucker?
Should Love attempt to out-Christian Bright, he’ll also have a tough time. Bright and Love are both members of Montgomery’s First Baptist Church. Both are deacons and it was Bright who voted for Love to join him on the board of deacons.
Nevertheless, Love has a decided advantage going into the fall campaign. The second District is about as Republican as they come and has been since 1964. However, his message could hurt him and depending on the tack he takes, Love could be his own worst enemy..”
There are so many things wrong with the post above – geez – let me count the ways. Bright has focused on issues? Blue Dogs weild power? Bright has a better shot at committee assignments due to dem power? What is this guy smoking? Bright has said zero in his ads – they are pure fluff. Blue Dogs? Pelosi could care less and it has been proven they vote the party line anyway – that’s why she doesn’t care. And just FYI – Republicans control which Republicans are placed on committees and dems control what dems. The “majority” party does not give bright any better chance of an assignment than the Republicans give Jay. If someone wants to write such a biased article – at least get some facts straight to make it believable.
58 — what exactly did you say? You repeated everything with question marks and the word “please.” A couple of sentences weren’t even sentences and made no sense.
You said nothing. You can’t refute something with nothing. You have to use facts.
I agree with # 59, share some facts. The article seems legit.
It is a fact that Bright’s adds are all fluff. It is a fact that Rs appoint their own members to committees and Dms appoint their own. So how does Bright have an advantage? The article makes it sound as if Dems are in charge and thus Love wouldn’t be appointed to committees of choice by them. Not true. And Blue Dogs? There have been numerous posts on that subject that they are not independent nor conservative as per a review of their voting records in Congress. The article you cite is biased.
61 – 58
Dems will be in charge. Even Republican insiders know this. So Bright will get good committees… and Bright will have the ability to get something passed. Do you understand this?
The Republican leadership could appoint Love could to the very best committees, but being a freshman in the minority… and, by the way, a VERY partisan freshman who bashed the Dems… he would get nothing done. Do you understand this?
As far as Blue Dogs… on fiscal matters, the Blue Dogs make the Dems reign in spending. On social policy, the Blue Dogs force the Dems to consider those Americas who are not socially liberal. Do you understand this?
This district is Blue Dog. You do not understand this.
As for the biased article… what facts were wrong? Again, READ and then use facts.. specific facts.
John McCain likes going to casinos. He is one of the most loyal and most effective Indian-gambling senators. What about this do you not understand?
Thank you, previous post for showing what an Obama loving McCain hating dem you are. That’s real popular in district 2, you know?
But just as important, thanks for showing that you flat out don’t know your civics and how a minority member of congress, regardless of party, is on equal footing. It is more about seniority than party my friend.
But I guess the democrats do hope to have a member with no backbone….one that cannot even come out and support their Presidential nominee. yeah….he is a real jewel.
What is Obama loving? And I don’t hate McCain. I just pointed out that he loves gambling and supports casinos. THAT is not popular with your boss Love’s voters.
That statement about equal footing for minority members is fiction you made up. Each committee has more majority members than minority members. Nothing the minority wants makes it out without the majority party. No freshman minority member has anything see the light of day. But a freshman in the majority party from a district that he needs to work to hold on to will get some things through.
Move to DC. You’ll figure this out your first day,
“Obama loving McCain hating dem”
Man, you guys are really running out of chalk for the drawing board, huh?
Anyone who thinks that freshman members of congress are all equal, regardless of majority/minority status, does not have the chalk or the board.
I am sure the democrats would love to have another member to add to their majority. But i doubt the people of district 2 want to add another one based on the policies of the democrat leadership.
So…..did Bright find any back bone over the weekend? Can he stand up and tell us who he supports for President yet? It shouldn’t be so hard if he is “his own man” as he says.
Post 67,
Dude, you all have gotten about all the mileage you’re going to get out of that question. Honestly, it’s only going to work on people already leaning your way.
I realize repetition and monotony have been the hallmarks of your campaign, but you’re starting to run off your own.
So please come up with something a little fresher than the underwear I’ve had on for two days.
Gunney – thanks for making us all sick….in more ways than one.
Gunney,
In these hard times, I understand cutting back on most things. But laundry? Are eight years of failed Bush policy making America such a tough place that we can’t even afford personal hygiene?
Thanks, Ms. Pelosi, ummmm, post 70.
Do you know her? It sounds like you really know her. If so, can I get an autograph? The first woman Speaker of the House. In line for the presidency. And the head of the party that represents the MAJORITY of Americans.
Welcome to the desert. Dems were there for 12 years. It could be longer for you.
I love posts like #72. That plays really well for Bright in district 2. Tie Pelosi to him and the rant she made on the house floor today all day long. Please do.
74. Gunney Highway …(Ronnie Gilley). Chief Shallow Pockets probably is running low on cash these days for laundry. Lots more than his britches smelly round these parts. Found him a couple of arrowheads , and Country Crossing is ummmm…… Go to Wiregrass Live where’s he’s got at least three names there. (In the Know, Renegade Wrangler, and of course, Chief Shallow Pocket’s real name. )
