Bright’s humor ad will offset Jay Love’s and his 527s negative ads. Notice that the two actual politicians are national democrats! So, I don’t think Bright is beholden to the liberal national agenda.
Now thats exactly the message Bright has been conveying during his campaign. He leads by example and you can tell that by his actions and the messages he delivers. He being the professional that he is has demonstrated this all along. We need strong leaders like Bright, not more across party bickering and fighting in Washington. This state and country can benefit from Bright’s work ethics. I am proud to say thats its time we vote Bright as our new Congressman!
What single issue, besides his position on “the most important vote he will cast” for Speaker of the House, has Love articulated? He has said nothing about what he believes are the issues most important to voters in CD2, much less how he will fight for us in CD2 on those issues, specifically, infrastructure and economy. Neither has he articulated how his record in the Legislature reflects his qualifications on those issues.
Love has been campaigning exclusively on narrative(“I’m the conservative Christian Republican, and my opponent is the “liberal Democrat” posing as a conservative Christian), whil Bright has traveled the District talking about bringing federal funds to build infrastructure in CD2 that will promote job growth. I guess it’s hard for Love to talk about the issues or his record, when he has no real record to speak of.
You nailed it. That’s the campaign in a nutshell. But one more thing. If you put Bright’s record as mayor against Love’s record in the state house, you get a guy who gets things done compared to a guy who just goes along. And people don’t want to hear your 10 point plan for healthcare. If they did, Al Gore or John Kerry would be in the White House. I just look at who I trust and who I think will get things done to make things better.
That is absolutely the stupidest ad I have seen this campaign season. Bright had to have come up with that ad himself. Love needs to send him every dime he has so will continue to run that till election day.
The biggest issue today is the fact that nobody gets along. I’m embarrassed to show my kids the presidential race on the news, and that’s nicer than this one. This ad put it down where the goats can get it.
Are we sure this isn’t just an internet ad? I just can’t see anyone approving something like this to run on the air.
I know people don’t like negative campaigning, but you have to respond when you get hit in the gut (Freedom’s Watch, Everett, etc.) Bright doesn’t have to “go negative,” he can just respond to the attack. Freedom’s Watch gave him the perfect opportunity because he could bash them and not Love. And he is in the unique position that no one would fault him for it since the other side has already been so harsh.
I disagree that this offsets the shots at Bright. To those who are already leaning Bright, this will reinforce their opinion. It doesn’t hurt him by any means, but I don’t see them moving numbers with cartoons and kids.
Maybe they are way smarter than me and have something up their sleeve. But in my opinion, Bright must get tougher.
There are some people who the Terry Everette ad will work on, because they are older and know who he is. But there are some people who will get this, too.
You Lovers are really looking through some strange colored glasses. For someone to talk about Bright not discussing issues. Now that is the pot calling the kettle black. Love focuses on lying about everything so he does not have to discuss any truths. Truths like his less than poor record in the legislature. If Love wins this thing it will be the equivalent of my nephew mastering the game Operation, staying in a Holiday Inn last night, and performing open heart surgery on the Queen of England. His legislative record makes him so qualified to be a member of Congress. His biggest legislative accomplishment was what? Voting against Speaker Seth Hammett. That certainly qualifies him to vote against Nancy Pelosi. NEWSFLASH! Jay Love is indeed qualified for Congress.
post 10 – you are full of it. bright has not mentioned one single issue in his ads. and you blame love for not doing so? at least love has run an ad on energy policy and on ft rucker. bright runs fluff. period. fluff.
and have you been hearing love speak around the district? doubtful, so don’t act like you know what he is saying.
I do find it odd that many Bright folks have this whole “bring home the bacon” theme with Bright in an age that earmarks are a bad thing. weird.
in terms of this ad , it is a good one for bright, though.
WELL WELL WELL *******the negative ads from the Democrat national committee have started*****
I just saw it. An ad criticizing love for not giving health insurance to those that worked at his sub shops? geez, how many part time workers at subway expect health benefits? Nevertheless, the whole point is, BRIGHT IS A MASSIVE HYPOCRIT NOW. I am thrilled this is happening as so many on here talked about how great bright was and how different and he was so positive, etc. EVEN BETTER, THE AD SAYS PAID FOR BY THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE. So these ads both show that Bright goes negative AND remind folks the democrats are bankrolling him and he is ONE OF THEM. I love it!!! I thought this would not happen until October and wondered if Bright would FOLLOW HIS PLEDGE….HE DID NOT! I knew this would come. The race just turned – and not in Bright’s favor. By doing this, he is a total hypocrit and so are all his supporters. PAID FOR BY THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE…….PRICELESS.
So Love calls the casino guy in Vegas and asks him to take his ads off the air, and Bright calls the Dems and asks them the same thing. Then there will be peace in the valley once again.

Bobby Bright gets attacked by Jay Love… then by Jabba the Hut (AKA Terry Everette)… and then by a casino billionaire… and when the Democrats respond, you call him a hypocrite? I can’t comprehend this logic.
At least the folks who are responding are releasing their donor list. Let’s see Freedoms Watch do the same.
And if the Democrats didn’t respond, what good are they? They’d just be allowing the boat to be swifted down the river. You might like that, but those days are over.
can’t wait for bright to roll out the “1st graders for bright” yard signs next, in crayon. bright is in his element on the sofa with two kids, and definitely on his intelligence level
It would be 1st grader republicans for Bright. Color of crayon would be red to represent how the republicans have the whole country in the red with overwhelming national debt. Those two little kids could very likely do as well as George’s bumbling bunch of economists.
Not so sure that Bright will vote for Pelosi. As more and more conservative blue dogs are elected to Congress Pelosi is not guaranteed that she will be the Speaker in the next Congress. So, Jay Love who gives a shit that you won’t vote for Nancy!!
I’ve often wondered the same thing. There had been some mention in 2006 of Gene Taylor and a few other of the Blue Dogs leading a revolution against Pelosi to force the Democrats to put a more moderate candidate for the position. I’m not a Washington insider so I don’t know all the goings on, but from a PR perspective, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are not a great credit to my party. Rahm Emmanuel, Steney Hoyer, Artur Davis, or any number of people would make a better spokesperson for the party in the house.
But why stop there? Ever since she was defeated in the primary (and even beforehand since I was an Obama supporter), I’ve been an advocate for Hillary Clinton as Senate Majority Leader. She has the pragmatism required for the position but she her skills as a politician put Reid to shame. Just an idea but I think if Washington Democrats are serious about governing, not just winning one election, they should seriously consider looking at their leadership in Congress.
The voters of the 2nd district deserve to know how their representative in Congress will represent them. They know exactly that with Jay Love. I think Love’ promise to voters is a far stronger pledge to the voters than Bright’s empty campaign pledge.
Promise to the Voters by Rep. Jay Love
1. Our campaign will talk about the issues that matter to the voters of the 2nd Congressional District. I will articulate my position and express a vision that will improve our nation and reflect positively on the people I wish to represent.
2. Our campaign will not run from my political party affiliation. I will stand with my fellow party members on ground we share in common, and I will never attempt to mislead voters by shrinking from a party label that I have willingly chosen.
3. Our campaign will stand behind the statements that I make, the commercials that I produce and the mail that I send. There are clear differences in this race – differences between the political parties and differences between the candidates representing them. It is appropriate to discuss these differences and I will do so in a forthright, honest manner.
4. Our campaign will accurately reflect the views and philosophies of my opponent, his political party and the interests supporting his campaign as we understand them, and as evidence suggests, in our political advertising, mail and other media.
5. Our campaign will proudly and publicly support my party’s presidential nominee and will let the public know when I agree and disagree with the positions he takes.
6. Our campaign will work to ensure that the groups and individuals who contribute to my campaign agree with my political philosophies and principles so there is no confusion among the public as to where I stand on the important issues of the day.
7. Our campaign will not engage in the spreading of false rumors about my opponent’s family members through whisper campaigns or other nefarious methods, nor will we condone anyone who does.
8. Our campaign will publicly post this promise in our district headquarters for staffers and volunteers to read and follow. We will also publish it widely on our new, revised campaign website so that voters will know the principles guiding our campaign.
If elected, I further pledge to the voters that, as their Congressman, I will proudly cast my vote for House Speaker for a conservative Republican who accurately reflects the traditional beliefs and values of the citizens of the 2nd Congressional District. I further pledge I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi or other liberal members for Speaker or House leadership positions, as I believe that runs counter to the wishes of the 2nd District voters.
I heard Bright at a civic club speak and he said he wants to vote for a conservative democrat for Speaker of the House. With this year’s elections and the number os conservative dems that are expected to win they will continue to be a force. This makes southern republican politicians nervous because in the past there was no where a conservative white politician could go but to the Republican party. That is why you hear Everett and others rant against “Blue Dogs” There is a movement and it is a natural response to the reckless arrogance of the Republican party
Susan – way to post something that the Love campaign cooked after to cover their patootiies after Bright beat them to the punch. Just like everything else in this entire campaign.
Post 39 – you need to understand the facts about blue dogs that have previously been posted here. The fact: per their voting records they are not independent or conservative. They vote the party line a minimum of 80% of the time. As Bright is doing, they only use “blue dog” as cover when they are back home running for office.
Susan-
Doesn’t Jay’s record show a vote for a Democrat for Speaker in the Alabama House? How is that different?Or was he merely angling for committee assignments then? Or did it not make a difference in Montgomery?
All right Susan, so let’s take a look at that mesmerizing pledge you’re marinating over.
1. Our campaign will talk about the issues that matter to the voters of the 2nd Congressional District.
-Well what are they? All I’ve really heard is “Drill Now”. I don’t think it’s worth my time to explain how ridiculous that mindset is anymore.
2. Our campaign will not run from my political party affiliation.
- Thanks. I think we’ve all got it, Jay’s a Republican. Which really does say something about the candidate and the party. “Hey, vote for me because I say I’m one of these,” or “Don’t vote the candidate (because I’m obviously the weaker), vote the party”
3. Our campaign will stand behind the statements that I make, the commercials that I produce and the mail that I send. There are clear differences in this race – differences between the political parties and differences between the candidates representing them. It is appropriate to discuss these differences and I will do so in a forthright, honest manner.
- Huh?
4. Our campaign will accurately reflect the views and philosophies of my opponent, his political party and the interests supporting his campaign as we understand them, and as evidence suggests, in our political advertising, mail and other media.
- I think you guys just said the same thing in Pledge 3. I don’t know…it seems repetitive. It basically says you’re going to focus on Mayor Bright’s campaign donors, not your own credentials…or at least that’s the way it’s worked so far.
5. Our campaign will proudly and publicly support my party’s presidential nominee and will let the public know when I agree and disagree with the positions he takes.
- Well good. I’ve never really heard of another Republican not supporting another (except in a primary)…especially in the age of a 99% partisan voting record pretty much being the standard in the GOP. So don’t try to prtray this as blazing trails and working for the people.
6. Our campaign will work to ensure that the groups and individuals who contribute to my campaign agree with my political philosophies and principles so there is no confusion among the public as to where I stand on the important issues of the day.
- Uh oh. Houston, I think we may have a problem here. Please see “Freedom’s Watch” and ironic twist regarding accusations aimed at Harri Anne Smith. On a side note: Mr. A, I’m still waiting on the two-week pass to The Venetian.
7. Our campaign will not engage in the spreading of false rumors about my opponent’s family members through whisper campaigns or other nefarious methods, nor will we condone anyone who does.
- I highly doubt this one, Mr. Love. Besides, this is really the bedrock of Republican campaigning…I wouldn’t just surrender it if I were you.
8. Our campaign will publicly post this promise in our district headquarters for staffers and volunteers to read and follow. We will also publish it widely on our new, revised campaign website so that voters will know the principles guiding our campaign.
-I’m honestly disappointed that anyone would spread this foolishness (even as graffitti), but that pretty much divulges my disappointment in both this candidate and their whole campaign.
9. If elected, I further pledge to the voters that, as their Congressman, I will proudly cast my vote for House Speaker for a conservative Republican who accurately reflects the traditional beliefs and values of the citizens of the 2nd Congressional District.
- What if a conservative Democrat will do? Honestly, the businessman in Mr. Love has come out here. You guys are trying to sell a brand. A dying one at that. How about selling me a leader?
Well honestly, until you become one, you can’t.
Oh, and Post 41, 80% of the time is actually a significant break from the party. I’m not certain of your familiarity with Congressional politics, but I personally was surprised to hear it was that low. Go Blue Dogs.
FYI, check the records of the more conservative Republicans or liberal Democrats…they will approach 95% if not higher. Not all votes are partisan, only the controversial ones. Many votes sail through without a single “nay”. So this revelation really does speak to the “Maverick” nature of the “Blue Dogs” and sort of taints Mr. Everett’s baseless comments. I’m really not surprised he doesn’t approve of them…if you don’t take orders it ruffles feathers.
So send me over a fresh copy of this pledge so I can hit the toilet.
In Jay Love’s “pledge,” 6 of the 8 “promises” mention political party. Another mentions “political philosophy.” So he pledged to run a divisive campaign.
I have a question, since Jay Love’s main (and almost sole) issue seems to be party: If we could magically do away with the 22nd amendment and the choice for President for the next 4 years was Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton, would Love be stressing party as much? I just wanted to hear discussion on this idea.
Gunney, you have way too much time on your hands but in your world of make believe I guess things are swell. Your defense of blue dogs is particularly “out to lunch.” When it matters, they are not there. When they can make a difference, they don’t. When they can actually show some independence, they run back to momma Pelosi. It is proven time and time again.
It is a shame, as they could actually make a difference if they had the guts to. They don’t. Name me one major issue facing this country where they have bucked their party. Just one…
That 10% is critical. Those are often the roll call, stand alone votes. (BTW — Reps vote together 100% of the time.)
The Blue Dogs do not effect policy by voting against a bill, or as you say, “bucking the party.” That would be stupid and wouldn’t get anything done. On every policy issue, the Dem leadership must ask themselves, “Where will the Blue Dogs be?” Then, they have to make concessions. That was not the case 10 years ago, when the Blue Dogs were smaller and could just be ignored.
Today, their biggest influence is in the budgeting process. One good example is money for areas like juvenile justice. Instead of throwing money at “programs,” the Blue Dogs set a very high bar on what would be funded, looking at verifiable data on what works and setting up accountability for future funding.
Another BIG area is cutting the overall budget. The Blue Dogs are the Members of Congress who make everyone see the daily federal debt and who post long lists of wasteful spending that they will oppose.
If the Republicans had a similar coalition, they would probably be in better shape. But instead of Red Dog group of Republicans who look out for working folks on issues like healthcare and trade policy, ALL of them defer to their leadership, who is in bed with the insurance, drug, and manufacturing industries.
Jay Love shows no sign that he is willing to buck his party and stand up for the regular people who put their family’s needs ahead of political party. I think Bright would be a Blue Dog (if the caucus elects him.
Yes, it is not a simple matter of joining. Membership is capped in order to keep their coalition cohesive and effective.)
As an elected official, I am tuned into voting habits and practices. Call me a political junkie, but I am fascinated by the whole electoral process—what age group votes most often, what issues motivate them and what media outlet is the most effective. While all of my interest in the political world is a hobby [...]
I write this blog with some mixed emotion. Over the last eight years I have served in the House of Representatives, and this Thursday will most likely be my last day in session as a House member. Of course, my term goes until November, and there could always be a special session at [...]
I’ve been in Venice on a little vacation and just returned last night. I’ve been trying to catch up and see that there have been few dramatic events in the last 10 days. I thought the www.fivethirtyeight.com piece was especially good, though the comments reflected the anti-Alabama knee-jerk reactions of those who live outside the [...]
Good ad. Always nice to ad humor as folks remember and appreciate it.
Bright is absolutely destroying Love in the press and on the air. Let’s see who Love tries to hide behind with his next ad.
It will be interesting to see if Bright can get elected to Congress without ever, EVER articulating a position on a single issue.
Susan is right that Bright will run a total awww shucks fluff campaign. Will it work? Possible.
This state and country can benefit from Bright’s work ethics. I am proud to say thats its time we vote Bright as our new Congressman!
He’s pro-Life and pro-gun, so how can he be a liberal. He’s also keeping to the high road. It’s about time we had some humor, too.
Anony # 4–Yes–this is a narrative (Bright) vs issues (Love) campaign.
Right because “he’s a liberal” and “I love McCain/Palin” are “issues.” And “keeping America strong” and “Protecting Ft. Rucker’s Jobs” “aren’t.”
The Love kool aid is STRONG.
Susan,
What single issue, besides his position on “the most important vote he will cast” for Speaker of the House, has Love articulated? He has said nothing about what he believes are the issues most important to voters in CD2, much less how he will fight for us in CD2 on those issues, specifically, infrastructure and economy. Neither has he articulated how his record in the Legislature reflects his qualifications on those issues.

Baudrillard,

I just look at who I trust and who I think will get things done to make things better.
How did they get that cat to sit still?
I just got the “pink-yellow” thing! That’s brilliant!
Love can give some of that casino guys money to Bright, then Bright can run his ad, and everyone is happy!
To date: Two dogs and one cat verses Terry Everette. It’s getting better all the time.

My sister checks her e-mail once a day, at best. She has never been on a blog. But she will vote and this ad will speak to her.
post 10 – you are full of it. bright has not mentioned one single issue in his ads. and you blame love for not doing so? at least love has run an ad on energy policy and on ft rucker. bright runs fluff. period. fluff.

Finally! Some humor. Everyone is soooo serious. But in one night, we get SpongeBob and “Abranoff the light”? Makes me proud to be an American.
Bright is the ultimate hypocrit now.
What?

There is only ONE fact of interest in this race. Bright will vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House, Love will not.

This is really good and so upbeat. Strong message sent in a light-hearted way.

That is yet another great ad from Bright. His TV outpaces Jay’s badly regardless of your political stripe.
Bobby’s campaign is just better. Period. But it does not mean he will win.
I’d sure hire Anzalone over Dax EVERY SINGLE TIME.
That’s just about the most futile, stupidest ad that I have ever seen a candidate for political office run.
He has kept that pledge.
Just one…
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26694#continueA
Looks like they vote with the party over 80% of the time, and some over 90%. No surprise…
