I just watched that ad. That boy actually says, “Eat the bears.” That’s good stuff!
“On every policy issue, the Dem leadership must ask themselves, Where will the Blue Dogs be? Then, they have to make concessions.”
THAT IS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF CRAP I HAVE READ ON HERE IN A LONG TIME. The Dem leadership doesn’t have to wonder where the blue dogs will be or to make concessions to them….ever. Why? because they know they will not buck the party when it come to crunch time. Get Real.
Put on your boots guys, it’s getting high in here with the load of crap Post 50 just pushed out.
Novak says it best:
“What is clear is that Blue Dogs are neither conservatives nor independents. They only campaign that way. They are hoping that in November they can ride through the current political ethos for at least another two years.”
I think there should be a “10,000 times mentioned” rule on this blog. If something has been mentioned 10,000 times before, the person who posts it again gets booted off the blog for a month. #53 would be gone until late October by that rule. We heard the Novak thing the first 9,999 times.
Here’s some liberal criticism of the “Blue Dogs”.
It looks to me like they march to their own beat…but not necessarily on every issue. Who does?
Hey, on the issues you guys love to exploit, they’re in lockstep with you: abortion, gun-control, and gay marriage. I mean hello, there aren’t any other issues to Republicans. You’ve sort of surrendered the high ground on supporting “free-market” principles. What the hell are those anyway? Corporate bailouts and “golden parachutes”.
This is too much fun.
I’d say funding the Iraq War and efforts to promote fiscal reponsibility would be major issues where the “Blue Dogs” bucked the party.
Are you guys just doing spin, or does Google not work on your computer? It’s a great tool and it has aided my evolution into a world-class researcher.
BLUE DOGS OUGHT TO BE RED-FACED
If I may add a point to Robert’s post below, this story in The Hill about the obstinate-yet-conflicted House “Blue Dog” coalition is exactly the sort of problem that ought to frustrate liberals. Here you have (some) conservative Democrats who have repeatedly voted to fund a war without worrying about how to pay for it, and now all of sudden they show pangs of fiscal responsibility about not coming up with the monies to fund one program in the new war spending bill. Blue Dogs finally getting with the program: Sounds great, right?
Not so fast, because the part they are raising fiscal responsibility objectives about is…wait for it, because it’s really going to infuriate you…education benefits for veterans. Where was this sort of ethic from Blue Dogs when the Bush administration was asking for billions to be handed over to venal, wasteful, no-bid contract-winning war profiteers?
“Some of us oppose creating a new entitlement program in an emergency spending bill, whether it’s butchers, bakers or candlestick-makers,” said Rep. John Tanner (D-Tenn.), a founding member of the Blue Dog Coalition who serves on the House leadership team as a deputy whip. The so-called GI Bill of Rights, authored by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.), would give veterans money for college and cost $720 million in its first two years. But critics say that could grow to billions in future years.”
No! Not billions spent without funds to pay for it — that just never happens in defense spending!
Two comments: First, thank goodness for Webb. Second, I’m going to keep saying this until it starts to sink in: Since Reconstruction, the Blue Dog element within the Democratic Party has gone from dominant majority, to significant minority to what it is today — a declining coalition of conflicted complainers. Among the blessings of building a non-southern Democratic majority is that there is greater intraparty ideological cohesion, thus marginalizing Blue Dogs and their hand-wringing interference with emerging liberal project.

53. Novak? Why didn’t you just quote Lord Vader. The Blue Dogs don’t force the Democrats like Pelosi to moderate. Look at the recent vote on drilling! They also don’t go with Labor 100% of the time.
Tom,
My head is going to explode. I agree that the Democrats have always had a moderate or conservative element that over time has gained and lost influence. But since they are recruiting candidates like Bright, which they would NEVER have done ten years ago, I have to believe that the conservative element is on the rise. Look at MS and LA. Those candidates are also pro-Life and pro-gun and anti-tax.
I agree Anon 57.
Tom actually wrote that article for “The American Prospect”; a “liberal intelligence blog”.
You may have to go there to argue with him.
Is Jay Love “pink?”
Danny, you should post the national democrats negative ad about Jay Love. So much for Bright and his phony “pledge” Hypocrit
60…
Once again, I’ll recap the reality of the situation for you:
Love attacks Smith
On election night, Love begins his campaign by attacking Bright from the podium
Love runs an ad attacking Bright
Love runs an ad with Everette attacking Bright
The casino guy runs an ad attacking Bright
Now, the Democrats run an ad against Love.
4-1 on the negative score card…
Not to mention the fact that unlike the Republicans and the casino guy who are clearly coordinating their attacks, Bright has nothing to do with the Democratic ad.
You are just mad, because you thought Bright could be swift boated.
Is Jay Love the cat?
From Newsweek, June 2008… about the Blue Dogs:
With 49 members, theirs is a coalition too big for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to ignore. In a 435-member House, 218 is a majority, so while she deals with various factions—such as the Congressional Black Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Congressional Progressive Caucus, and Out of Iraq Caucus—she can’t afford many Blue defectors with today’s 235-to-199 margin.
And Pelosi hasn’t overlooked them. As speaker, she immediately backed a House rule requiring “pay-as-you-go” spending and taxing, a major achievement for the coalition. Though the rule may be waived, it requires that increases in new mandatory spending and decreases in taxes be paired with commensurate budget cuts or revenue-producing measures.
Speaker Pelosi could care less about blue dogs.
You are probably right. But she has to deal with them.
Anon 60,
I’m going to save some space here and forego cut-and-pasting the multiple posts you guys have wasted with the same comments over the last 24 hours.
We’ve all got it. You consider Bobby Bright a hypocrite because the DCCC ran a negative ad about Jay Love.
Danny,
I too wouldn’t mind if you’d post the DCCC ad so that you’re not subject to the inevitable taunts of a “liberal bias” on this blog…of which there is not.
How can a blog be biased? It’s up to the people who post to drive it. Those who don’t get that, either don’t understand blogs, or they are just frustrated that they are in the minority.
Talk radio is right wing. They own it. The Democrats have NOTHING.
But when it comes to a more interactive medium like blogs, where intelligence matters, because facts come out and false claims can be contradicted, the angry right-wingers end up lonely and depressed.
I have never voted for a Democrat. Love and his campaign ads are making everyone sick! People are deciding who to vote for on a daily basis! Every day, Love is making more and more people sick to their stomachs! He won’t even talk to the camera for an interview. He has one of his pee-odds talk to the press every time! Grow up Love and talk for yourself! It would sure make for a better campaign. Todd is NOT doing you any good! Actually, I think looking at the grease makes for a worse message to the public!
You said it Post # 60
I couldn’t have put it any more plain than you just stated it. Although, everyone knows that Jay is wimpy and so is his uncle Andy. What would be more of a waste of taxpayer dollars than for Alabama voters to elect Love to Congress. He is a no good for anything, hypocrit of a person. We definitely don’t need the lying scoundrel in there.
Bright has some truly nasty supporters on here. …Yawn….
Bright does have alot of supporters whom are sick of the Love lies. There are some who don’t mind bringing it to the surface for 02 voters to hear about. One other important piece of information you should know is that your man Love is one immature spoiled brat that can’t speak for himself. He has to rely on others to tell him what to say. Now what a joke!
I live in the 3rd CD so I have generally read and not posted about the Bright/Love race debate. I have noticed that many Bright supporters have commented on how effective Bright has run Montgomery. Well tonight I had my first encounter with Montgomery City Government, a user friendly encounter it was not. I was asked to appear before the Montgomery Architectural Review Board tonight at 5:30. I showed up about five minutes before and found all the doors locked. I drove over to the city police department just to make sure I had the correct address, I had and went back by and found the doors still locked. I went back to my car and as I was about to leave I saw someone else approach the door that I had just found locked and I saw them rattle the door and a few seconds later they were able to open the door. I went back and repeated his successful entry steps and had the same results. However, by now I was late they were already working on case four. I sat through cases five to eleven and my case was not among them so I assume I was not there when it was called up the whole thing will have to be done again next month.
I am a strong Democrat but I am not an ideologue. In my limited experiences, Bobby Bright’s city government is not well run and it is most user unfriendly.
72,
That must have been very frustrating. Waiting a month will be more frustrating. But it sounds like an old door that sticks, and you didn’t pull hard enough. You should ask the Mayor’s office to investigate the door. But if all those other people were in there, they figured it out.
I saw the Mayor in the grocery store one evening being asked about a tree branch that blocked a stop sign. I would not want that man’s job. Every tree and every door that do not cooperate are laid at his feet on a daily basis.
73, you’re right, not to mention every tax that is levied is laid at his door as well.
Anonymous #73. No the door is locked, you have to know to rattle it and get the clerk’s attention and she presses a button to unlock it for you. But the door is dark glass and you can’t see anyone inside from the outside nor is there a sign to tell you that. If you are not with someone who knows the system you SOL.
You know, I am glad to see that so many bloggers on here know so much about how to get into Montgomery City Hall. That explains A LOT!
Say what you will, but most cities are having to lay off employees and cut services. Mayor Bright just vetoed 3 new taxes and did not cut jobs or services. This is because he created (meaning one did not exist before him) a rainy day account that is getting the city through. He has done this all and balanced every budget, killed city council discretionary funds, and caused the city’s credit rating to soar to the highest in the state. Facts are the Facts.
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THAT HE DOES INDEED HAVE THE POWER TO VETO A TAX. SOMETHING HIS COMMERCIALS FAIL TO POINT OUT !!!!! AND SOMETHING HE HAS FAILED TO DO BEFORE HE STARTED RUNNING FOR CONGRESS.
“Love’s Message A Turn Off for Some”
by Bob Gambacurta
The Montgomery Independent
“…Love would be well advised to concentrate on real issues that affect people’s lives and steer clear of trying to brand his opponent as something he is not. Bright is much better known to voters in this area than Smith was. He’s hardly a wild-eyed liberal. Bright is a fiscal conservative who is pro-gun rights, pro-life and in favor of clamping down on illegal immigration.
It will be hard for Love, who voted for the biggest tax increase in Alabama history, to characterize Bright as a tax and spend liberal. All Democrats don’t march in lockstep to the beat of Nancy Pelosi’s drum. Conservative Blue Dog Democrats wield considerable influence in Congress and will wield even more as the Democratic majority grows in both houses. If Bright is elected he will be one of them.
The number one priority for our next congressman should be protecting the jobs and missions at Maxwell-Gunter AFB and Fort Rucker. Bright has already fought and won BRAC battles for Maxwell. As a member of the majority party, he’ll get better committee assignments than a minority party member. Ask yourself what that could mean for the future of Maxwell and Fort Rucker?
Should Love attempt to out-Christian Bright, he’ll also have a tough time. Bright and Love are both members of Montgomery’s First Baptist Church. Both are deacons and it was Bright who voted for Love to join him on the board of deacons.
Nevertheless, Love has a decided advantage going into the fall campaign. The second District is about as Republican as they come and has been since 1964. However, his message could hurt him and depending on the tack he takes, Love could be his own worst enemy..”
