AL-02: Everett in New Love Ad

Retiring U.S. Congressman Terry Everett talks about party politics and the man he hopes succeeds him in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District in a new ad that begins airing today in Montgomery and Dothan. You can see the new ad for Republican Jay Love here ( Quicktime format). Love faces Democrat Bobby Bright in the November election.

Not bad. Better than his previous efforts, I think. He is certainly going all-out with the “guilt by association” campaign – I am going to be very interested in how well that works. Has Love run an ad in the fall campaign that has NOT focused on his opponent? By this, I am asking has he run any ads that talk about his OWN record and objectives?

  • Teams Matter

And Jay Love is playing Right Bench at this point.

  • Anonymous

More party politics that has gotten this country in this mess. I think what is going on this week in the markets is just the begining of us paying for our “sins” of dividing this country into two political parties.

  • Anonymous

The truth hurts. Bright is on the wrong team and made the wrong choice by saddling up with democrats. He is funded by them and will be controlled by them. If not….let Bright tell us he will not vote for nancy pelosi as speaker, does not support barack obama, and will send back the thousands he has received from charlie rangle who is to put it mildly, ethically challenged.

In terms of the ad, I think it’s good. Everett is well respected in district 2 and I think the ad will be helpful to Love. Love has put out other ads in the general election though, including one on energy policy and another about fort rucker, to answer post 1. All I have seen from Bright is the same puff piece over and over.

  • Blue Dog

Even Republicans admits Democrats will control the House for the near future. As a member of the majority, Bright will be best positioned to protect our military bases and protect our ag industries.

Just like Bevill / Nichols a couple of decades ago and like Bud Cramer now.

  • Straight Arrow

Well Terry didn’t mind spending all of our tax dollars he could when he was there but he doesn’t want to raise them either. It’s like voting for a pay raise without idenifying the source. (which he did on a number of occasions) So much for reducing the deficit or saving Social Security when he was in the majority.. I am sure our seniors would like to have had a raise too while he was getting himself one every year. About the only thing he did well when they were in the majority was spend……. We are so far in over our head that we will never get out and Bush’s social program for banks and private industry isn’t worth a damn either. I wish he was as concerned about seniors buying medicine, gas, food, and protecting the Social Security program so that when I am old enough, I can draw the benefits I have been promised. Also Bush has done one hell of a job on illegal immigration…. Yea I can see where I just ought to be tickled to death with the job Everett has done. His single biggest contribution has been to protect the peanut farmers with my tax dollars.. Hell of a job Terry……

#4 I agree that Love talked about himself during the PRIMARY election, but I haven’t seen anything in the FALL other than attack pieces/Bright definition ads. If you check post 1 again it says explicitly “fall campaign.” I don’t think Love has run anything except attacks during the fall.

  • Anonymous

Dear Post 6, thank you for showing what a Democrat you are, just like Bobby Bright. Hopefully, Obama can save us all from ourselves!!! After he parts the waters, let me know.

  • Anonymous

Jay Love has run ads in the “fall campaign” about the importance of the military in the district and also an ad about energy.

  • Excited about Obama

I can’t wait until Bobby’s buddy Barack gets into office. He’ll lower gas prices, cut taxes, balance the budget, pay for all of our seniors’ medicines (b/c that’s a right guaranteed in the Constitution, ya know…to live forever), increase spending on food stamps, increase spending on housing projects, increase spending on Social Security, decrease military spending (b/c that’s not as important as all those mean Republicans say), and save all of the poor folks in Darfur. The world will be perfect!

  • db

Without a doubt the best ad Love has run. Everett is still extremely popular in the district and especially the Wiregrass. The tide has shifted and Love is doing exactly what he needs to do and that is expose Bright for the Pelosi loving liberal he is.

  • Anonymous

“Pelosi-loving liberal.” C’mon db, that post is about as honest as Jay.

Hyperbole dosn’t play well – especially coming from a candidate with a truth problem.

  • Straight Arrow

I don’t know how you get that I am a Democrat when all I have done is state the facts. I am an independent. I will not vote for Obama. I like McCain’s fiscal conservative position and hope he will cut the hell out of spending in D.C. Just stating that Everett is talking out of both sides of his mouth when he says he is a fiscal or social conservative. Did he introduce legislation to outlaw abortion, eliminate benefits to illegals, or just a simple bill like trying to outlaw the burning of the US Flag. Did I miss his leadership role on any of these important issues???
He had his chance and if I am wrong, would you please show me the leadership role he has taken to help us (I mean US) citizens with our domestic problems?? We have spent enough money in Iraq and Afghanistan to pave every road, fill every prescription, and build 100 new refineries here in our country. I am also a right wing hawk who loves Israel and firmly believes in their philospy of surgical strikes, assinations; not occupation of countries who hate us more when we leave then when we came. (IE – Afghanistan, Iraq). I am also a Vietnam veteran. What have you done my good friend to preserve and protect, or do you just make asinine comments that seemingly fit your distortion of any criticism with such a candid and brilliant observation of; oh he’s just a dumb ass Democrat. That is a typical response to a brain washed person who lacks the ablility to think for himself and believes that the “Party” should do the thinking for him. Sorry, I can’t buy that. Give some facts sir.

  • db

When you take $650,000 in campaign support from Pelosi and you are running around the district telling anyone who will listen she has promised you these key comittee assignments and when she is hosting fundraisers in Washington on your behalf I feel sure he is lovin Pelosi.

  • Nixon

#13 is the best comment i’ve read on here in a very long time.

  • Anonymous

Dear Straight Arrow, apparently your arrow is bent. Before you go on a rant, seems like you should check the record.

Pelosi Loving Liberal? Well, Bright certainly loves her money…that is no secret. But, oh I forgot, he is “his own man” Yeah…right.

  • L-Diggy

Love wants only Republican support, and maybe that’s what he’ll get. But wasn’t his father-in-law a Democrat? And didn’t Love vote for a Democratic speaker?

  • Anonymous

Now you are “diggin” on in laws? Nice try L-Diggy.

  • Anonymous

i love that bright’s response to the ad comes in a written statement…Bright was probably so mad that his handlers realized he couldn’t talk live to a reporter, and then they remembered how dumb the spokesman made them all look when he implied that the good folks in CD2 were too dumb to know who Rangel was, guess written statement was the only way to make sure they didn’t screw up again. wow, only to be a fly on the walls of the campaign headquarters, i bet bobby’s broken everything in the place, twice.

  • Anonymous

It’s a good ad. Better than others I have seen.

  • Anonymous

No. 3, spoken like a lonely Democrat in a conservative state.

  • Real Concerned Citizen

Post #19, you’ve hit on something there about Bright’s spokesperson. I understand the national Democrats hired a DC based PR person who is not from Alabama to come be Bright’s spokesperson. They are effectively pulling his puppet strings. But hey, Bobby is his own man, right? Pelosi is getting her money’s worth.

  • Baudrillard

No.13, “What have you done my good friend to preserve and protect, or do you just make asinine comments that seemingly fit your distortion of any criticism with such a candid and brilliant observation of, oh he’s just a dumb ass Democrat. That is a typical response to a brain washed person who lacks the ablility to think for himself and believes that the “Party” should do the thinking for him. Sorry, I can’t buy that. Give some facts sir.”

That sums up the commentary on this site. It’s a shame, really. There used to be a fairly broad spectrum of thoughtful posts on this site. Now, it has just devolved into posting, reposting, and replying to prior posts of campaign talking points.

  • Anonymous

Bright is his own man? More like Pelosi’s boy it seems. He can easily over come that by showing some courage. Say he will not support her for Speaker, Say he does not support Barack Obama. Stand for something now Bobby, don’t just tell us you will stand up for us later.

  • anonymous

I am a Bright volunteer who spends many hours with the campaign. I have never posted here but I felt I must address a post. To post #19, maybe your candidate acts like that, but Bobby Bright is one of the calmest, most confident, finest southern gentlemen I have ever known. Under the stress of hearing slanderous attacks on him by Love on an almost daily basis, he has never shown an ounce of anger, never even spoken an evil word about his opponent for any of us to hear. When we get upset over Jay Love’s gutter politics, Bobby tells us to pay no attention, good will prevail The camapign headquarters I spend my time in is filled with so many good people who honor Bobby’s commitment to a clean campaign. From reading this board, and hearing the tacky and immature comments that Jay Love’s spokesperson and manager give to the press, not to mention the hate Jay Love spews, I KNOW I am in the right headquarters, and on the winning team.

  • Anonymous

Here is the continuing (and growing) list of people that Love talks about besides himself
I reviewed all the Campaign ads by both candidates that I could find on youtube or the candidates’ website. Below are the results: Xs represent the number of times the person is shown in separate segments or mentioned in separate segments
    Love:
    Obama xxxxx x
    Kerry xx
    Polosi xxxxxxx x
    Clinton xxx
    Edwards xx
    Kennedy xx
    Gov. Riley xx
    Palin x
    Bright x
    McCain x
    Everett x
Harri Anne Smith x (Represents and entire commercial based on her)

    Bright: (includes DCCC’s first ad)
Jay Love x (just shows name on unsigned pledge)
Does anyone not see this as a problem? You have to ask yourself why Love can not get elected on his own record. Why he has to base his campaign aroung looking like the lesser of two evils. IS this not the problem with politics already?
I am afraid Jay Love is going to be just another worthless congressman that when things get tough or bad they just point the finger at someone else. We already seem to enough of those there.

  • Anonymous

Jay Love spwes hate? What planet do you live on? That is ridiculous. And Bright is such a nice guy??? Why do those that do business with the City complain about being strong armed that they better support Bright or else?

  • Anonymous

#26, has “redundancy” become a new issue on the dems platform? you’ve posted this exact same thing at least one other time without change. guess you are proud of your research, research that doesn’t matter by the way, and want some kudos? well, here you go: congrats on wasting your time. now run along and do some more pointless research.

  • Anonymous

#28 Actually it has changed. It has been updated to include Love’s latest ad that uses Everett and talks about Obama and Polosi.

  • L-Diggy

I like it #26. Research is good. That’s why I brought up Jay Love’s father-in-law. I believe he was a DEMOCRATIC state legislator. And I also think Mr. Love voted for a Democratic speaker — Seth Hammet. If I’m wrong, tell me so. But if I am right, then this obviously undermines those who think Party is all that matters.

  • poster of 26

#28 Also, I am pretty sure there were two ads solely focused on degrading Harri Anne Smith, but I think the second one has been removed from youtube so I did not count it. You know, the ad that points out she took gambling money when no gambling money has even been produced by Country Crossing yet at all. Love was reaching pretty low to degrade her in that one.

PS. I learned in church that you do not bring someone else down to bring yourself up. And surprisingly I go to the same church as Love.

  • Anonymous

30, it makes no difference about Jay’s father-in-law. not to mention comparing the speaker vote in montgomery to the Pelosi vote that Bright will make is like comparing potato chips and chocolate. you are probably a poltical rookie so explaining this to you would be way over your head. but one day you’ll understand. this is why no one bothered to address your points the first time you posted, so you can refrain from the redundancy as well.

  • L-Diggy

OK. Agreed. I’m a political rookie. Which puts me on par with the average voter. I spend more time at the grocery store than on the blogs. So when I hear that Democrats are horrible, un-American liberals and that voting for a Democratic speaker is wrong, and then I find out the person telling me this has voted for a Democratic speaker and that his father-in-law is a Democrat, I get confused. You will just have to explain it all R E A L S L O W L Y to all of us rookies who can’t see through what appears to be hypocrisy.

  • sick of half truths & lies

#31 -You are right on. The ads were bad – but the really deplorable thing about it was that he KNEW that the ad about gambling was a lie & did it anyway. He will do ANYTHING to win. We know he has put $650,000 of his own money in this race (no telling how much more since the last time he had to report). No wonder he is so desperate and willing to sell his soul for this election.

  • Evaluator

If the government record reflects it has not been such a good steward of US taxpayer dollars for several years now, why shouldn’t we vote for positive changes in November? I’m supporting Bright because I think he is the man who has the decency to be a good steward of my tax dollars. I also think Mr. Everett is simply using this ad in an effort to support the failed policies of the present administration he has been a vital part of during the past eight years. It is not rocket science folks to figure out this country has the largest deficit of over 7 trillion dollars and growing, and is in the biggest mess it has ever been in financially. With major financial institution failures and new ones seeking govt assistance to bail them out daily, I question why the govt couldn’t see this coming prior to now and institute measures to regulate these shortfalls?
Mr. Everett, Love is not what we need right now, we need to elect leaders willing to work together in harmony to produce positive changes for our future and the future of our children, not just more of why we need to vote more of the same, and more finger pointing!

  • Anonymous

Thank you Mr. Obama, I mean Post 35….

And Post 34 …..Yawn….. You are so off base it is funny.

  • Anonymous

Seems to me that Bobby Bright could win this race by (1) returning money from folks like Charlie Rangle and Nancy Pelosi (2) say he will support someone other than Nancy Pelosi as speaker (3) say he supports Mccain / Palin to lead this country. If he did those things I think the race would be over and he would win. It would show true independence and the “he is his own man” in action not just in words. But will he does these things? I doubt it – but it would shake up the race if he has the courage to do so.

  • Thomas Jefferson

he would never do that- too much power and money to be had, doled out by the Marxist faithful in Washington. If he had run as an independent, maybe, or better yet, run in the Republican primary. But he didn’t, thus giving us very stark differences in our candidates.

  • anonymous

Everyone should realize that Love is trying to tie Bright to Pelosi and while at the same time Bush is doing fundraisers for him. While Bush still has some popularity in Alabama, Love is getting support from a person the Republican Party’s Presidential nominee is running as far away from as possible. It seems logical and according to Loves conventional wisdom that financial support from someone ties them to that persons policies. As such, fewer financial supporters have longer proven policy records of bad judgement and inequity than Bush. Love should look no farther than his own campaign to see that financial support does not equal similar policies, or now does it?

  • Straight Arrow

#8 and # 16.. All I am asking sir is for facts. If you have them it would help me to understand your argument. If I have defamed Mr Everett, please set me straight… I await your specific facts on the leadership role that Mr Everett has taken on “key” conservative legislation. Can you give me a list of or maybe just one or two good conservative bills that Mr. Everett personally sponsored and got out of committee when his party was in the leadership or even recently as a minority member? Again, I await your reply. My bent arrow cries out for facts. If you can show me I am wrong, I assure you sir, that I have the courage and enough humility to apologize to you and to Mr Everett…… I await your response….. By the way, do you know how Mr Everett voted on CAFTA?

  • Anonymous

Love does not run from those that donate to his campaign, he does not run from the policies of the Republican party, he does not run from the leadership of the Republican party, including the President of the United States. The same can’t be said for Bobby Bright.

  • Anonymous

Post 40, do you even live in district 2 ? Rep. Everett is very popular and has been re elected with large majorites (average of 70% I believe). From farmers to veterans to active duty military – constituents think the world of him. Maybe you should review the record instead of spouting off at the mouth with your democrat leaning garbage.

  • I just want to know, Who wants Terry Everett speaking for them? I certainly don’t. If Bright is worried, he should bring up the litany of ridiculous statements that Everett has said in the past. I rank him the worst Rep. in the Alabama delegation, and would be embarrassed by his endorsement.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for your comments Talmadge. Seems like you need a heaping dose of reality.

Teams do matter. Bright has chosen his.

  • Anonymous

Everett is making “Idiotic Remarks” as the Dothan Eagle referred to them when they said it was time for him to go on home to the farm.

  • Straight Arrow

    # 42 produce or shut up…… Just give me a bill, all I am asking is for just one or two. SSurely that is not too much to ask for?? If he has done so much, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to prove it. If you do I will surely apologize and publicly admit I am wrong. Is that too complicated? You seem to know a lot about him.. Produce some factual proof……. I know a lot of folks who have served for years and never accomplished anything. Congress is full of them and I am beginning to believe you may be a little full yourself as all you can do is reply with rhetoric. Just give some fact and figures. I await your “specific” reply……. By the way, did Everett vote for CAFTA? Second request……

As somebody that does not have a “dog in the fight”, but someone that is very in tune with the voters of AL 02 by being in the polling industry, I just want to say Jay Love threw away all chances of winning when he was called out for lying in the primary.

Over and over again I see the number one response from people is that they want to elect someone they can trust.

If Jay Love did not lye then he should have put more effort into letting people know.

If Jay Love did lye then he should have put more effort into making people think he did not lye.

Either way he blew it and the polls show it, and I am not talking about one of those second class push polls.
