Daily Dixie Down

Flatline on an EKG screenDan at Daily Dixie (formerly Between the Links) has taken his blog down, leaving a hole in the Alabama political blogosphere. I’ll miss it.

One thing I appreciate about Dan is that he wanted his online efforts to go beyond the traditional blog form and make a difference in the state. One example was his Collaborative Online Resource for Alabama Lobbying. CORAL was an ambitious project he made available as a free resource to help groups track their lobbying efforts. Another example was the creation of his political action committee DanPAC. DanPAC lampooned the state legislature’s unwillingness to ban PAC-to-PAC transfers and move toward transparency in campaign funding. The official purpose of DanPAC as registered with the Office of the Secretary of State is “to filter funds from controversial or unpopular groups to other PACs and candidates for the purpose of hiding the actual source of a candidate’s campaign campaign money from voters.”

As much as I have appreciated his blog, I have appreciated his friendship. I’ve called on him a number of times, and he has always been generous with his help. You’ll find his fingerprints on some of the scripts that help keep the Parlor humming along.

I don’t know why he decided to give it up, but I have sympathy for the decision.

I hope we will see him around often.

I will miss him too. Daily Dixie was on my daily “must read” list.

First thing I did every day. It was one addiction that was a positive. He did alot to make our state a better place.

Come on guys. I’m not dead.

We certainly haven’t heard the last of Dan.

I certainly respect Dan’s decision which I must assume was based on personal matters that no one has the right to question, but I doubt that anyone will miss Dan’s blog more than I will. Dan was more helpful to me in my quest to help make Alabama the 25th Initiative and Referendum state (see http://www.doctoriq.com/)than anyone was. He also gave great support to the effort of the Democracy Defense League (http://www.thedemocracydefenseleague.com/)to help stop voter fraud in Alabama through its legislative agenda. The DDL agenda is my other main interest in the world of Alabama Government/politics. “God speed and good luck to Dan in whatever direction he takes now” is my wish for him.

I hear that he is re-doing his site and renaming it “IllegalSzhitzu.” I will also miss Dan’s insights, cool photographs, and other neat stuff that he shared with us. I blame Paul Hubbert, Lowell Barron, Alice Martin, and Karl Rove.

Dan, I hope you’re not giving up beer, too… Then you’d be dead to me :)

Roy your forgot to add Phil Fulmer to that list.

A damn shame. Being sort of isolated over in East Alabama where we get lots of Georgia news I read this blog for statewide news but I loved the spirited discussions on Danny’s blog.

I’ll do what the conspiracy blogs do — connect two things that have nothing to do with each other to explain something:

Daily Dixie is gone because of his recent criticism of the Schnauzer guy and Locust Fork guy. Those two met with Scott Horton recently, either in New York or Monroeville. Horton agreed to begin attacking Dan in the pages of Harper’s, and then they were going to get Jill Simpson to sign an affadavit that changed her story yet again to say that Dan was in on that conference call, too, and delivered her photos of Siegelman to Karl Rove. Before you know it, the House Judiciary Committee would certainly be holding Dan in contempt.

  • That’s a huge shame. His website was amazing. I really did read it every day. There are so few good Alabama blogs left in the game. I blog about the state a good bit, but it’s only from time to time and whenever the mood strikes. Parlor and Daily Dixie were great with everyday content about cutting edge events.

As many of you know I have been Channeling (mediumistic) William Shakespeare for some time. He has asked me to type this message, whilst in a trance.

“Hello, this is William Shakespeare. I have been dead for 392 years. However, I have penned a few words on this occasion:
What a piece of work was the Daily Dixie, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and movement how express and admirable,in action how like an angel in apprehension, how like a God, the beauty of the Universe, the paragon of blog sites.”

Adieu: Parting is such sweet sorrow
    Your friend, William Shakespeare

  • Dan will be missed – but someone will fill his shoes.

I had the same feelings Dan has now when I shut down PoliticsInAlabama.Com.

The more Alabama Political Bloggers we have the better and I am sure Dan has inspired others to start blogging.

I hate to see Daily Dixie’s run come to an end. It was one blog I tried to read every day without fail. Dan, I wish you the best in all your future endeavors.

Legislative Dispatch

A Look from the Rearview Mirror

This Thursday will mark the last day of the legislative Session.  For some, it was a Session that seemed would never end.  For others, it was one that ended much too quickly.  It may be early, yet, to write an obit on this Session, but as we approach the finish line, some perspective may be in order.

Putting Students First

As you know, a very important piece of legislation will be presented for our consideration in the House tomorrow in Montgomery – Senate Bill 310 – the “Students First” tenure and fair dismissal reform bill. Like me, many House members have been inundated with phone calls and emails from opponents of this bill, and some have been [...]

Legislative Transparency

There are a lot of issues to debate before we begin the final days of this session. In fact, I am quite certain there will be some comments on this post debating many of them. Before we get into the last seven day of the session I wanted to bring up a topic that [...]
