Terry Everett Wants Love for His District …and Governorship?

Filed under: Campaign & Election, AL Executive Branch, AL and DC — Danny @ 8:10 am

Retiring Republican Congressman Terry Everett endorses his party’s nominee, Jay Love, to succeed him in the 2nd Congressional District.

And he might run for Governor? He’ll hang on to some campaign money, just in case.

  1. Can money in an individual’s federal campaign account later be used in a state race?

  2. there’s a way to do it i believe, look at Hillary’s transfer of campaign funds to her NY senate campaign. saw an explanation but can’t remember exactly how it is done…

  3. well,His foot problem must have healed quick.Or he wanted some time off before running as Governor.By him endorcing Jay Love that tells me a whole lot.If I’d been him I would have waited awhile before mentioning running for governor.Never did think he was such a good congressman.

  4. Hey look - a do nothing congressman endorsing a bad candidate!!

    Comment by Tumbleweeds — July 29, 2008 @ 10:15 am

  5. 10:05, a candidate can transfer funds from a U.S. Senate campaign to a Presidential campaign (or vice versa) because they are both federal offices.

  6. Terry Everett has been a great asset to this district. His endorsement seals the deal for Jay Love. Thank you Terry for letting us know what we have already presumed…Jay Love is a great guy and will represent the district well.

  7. #4, you’re right about the “do nothing congressman,” i hope bright’s campaign seizes on that and shouts it from the rooftops throughout CD2.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 29, 2008 @ 10:49 am

  8. So we now have 3 candidates from 2nd Congressional District: Tim James, Jack Hawkins and Terry Everett. Unfortunately, none of them has good name id in North Alabama and since that makes up more than 60% of republican primary voters, none of these guys have a chance to be governor.

  9. #6 he may have been a good one from your neck of the woods ,but not mine.

  10. Federal money can be trasferred to a state campaign account - all of it. State money cannot be transferred to a federal account. Without getting into the weeds, Federal dollars raised meet every state regulation, but state regulations do not meet federal rules. Thus, it works one way, but not the other.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 29, 2008 @ 11:38 am

  11. Excuse me #8 but Tim James has excellent name ID.

  12. Bright should yell from the roof tops that Terry Everett was a do nothing Congressman? Wow. I hope he takes that advice. That would seal Bright’s fate. I can guarantee that Bright will not utter one negative word about Congressman Everett.

    Comment by GeenvilleGOPer — July 29, 2008 @ 12:19 pm

  13. I was at the news conference and Everett made one quip about holding onto the money because a smartmouth reporter said “you obviously won’t be using it.” Everett countered with the comment “how do you know what I am going to do with the money? I might need it.” He was not declaring his intent to run for other offices, just stating that he would consider it as many of the people giving said money had urged him to do so.

He also said that he would max Jay Love out and be there for him as an advisor (once elected) if he so desired.

    Comment by enterprise — July 29, 2008 @ 12:26 pm

  14. Thanks for the explanation 11:38.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 29, 2008 @ 1:21 pm

  15. What is the “maxed out” amount that he can give to the Love campaign?

    Comment by LD — July 29, 2008 @ 1:22 pm

  16. I believe $2500 is the max as an individual. $5000 as a PAC.

    Comment by LB-22 — July 29, 2008 @ 1:37 pm

  17. 4600 as a couple, and he can contribute all or part of his “war chest”

    Comment by enterprise — July 29, 2008 @ 1:47 pm

  18. I think the limit is 2,000 from campaign to campaign. But like an individual which is 2,300, you can give it to (1) the primary (2) the run off (3) the general election. Or all 3. A campaign cannot give then entire “war chest” as previosuly noted, directly from campiagn to campaign. A max out would be 6000 campaign to campaign or 6,900 from an individual.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 29, 2008 @ 2:04 pm

  19. Everette to GOP, GOP to Love. I believe this would allow him to transfer as much as desired. I could be wrong though

  20. pardon the misspell

    Comment by Common Sense — July 29, 2008 @ 3:06 pm

  21. He doesn’t WANT to give Jay the money, because he doesn’t really think he can win.

He knows that Bobby Bright’s personal story is the type that resonates with voters.

I heard from a Republican consultant in the know that Bright is ahead 60-40 right now.

    Comment by Tumbleweeds — July 29, 2008 @ 3:52 pm

  22. Tumbleweeds you are as full of crap as a “christmas goose.” It is the other way around. Love 60% Bobby, LIBERAL DEMOCRAT bright 40%.

    Comment by LD — July 29, 2008 @ 4:23 pm

  23. I will not be surprised to see Bright elected as our next Congressman because he resonates so well with the voters of the district. He states his position on the current issues and status of the country’s economy so well, each voter is relating to his comments easily. The DEMS will take it in Nov. due to the economic downturn in the last few years. People are ready and needing to see change folks!

    Comment by 02 Voter — July 29, 2008 @ 4:32 pm

  24. 23, I think Bright will win also.

    Comment by Nixon — July 29, 2008 @ 5:50 pm

  25. Bright WILL lose by double digits. Everett has backed Jay Love behind closed doors since the primaries and so has Bob Riley. Niether opted to get involved in the primaries which is an intelligent thing to do. However, BOTH will be very involved with this race as they know the future of the 2nd district cannot rest with a DO NOTHING DEMOCRAT. Bright has been ineffective at best during his tenure as Mayor and will be allied with Pelosi and the likes.

TERRY EVERETT even commented that JAY LOVE will have an equal chance to get on any committees when compaired to Bright. Pelosi can not pull strings for her main squeeze in this case.

Jay Love is the best and BRIGHTEST choice for Congressman.

    Comment by anonymous — July 29, 2008 @ 6:32 pm

  26. AAAh, let’s

not get too riled up over who’s gona win.I can say one thing if Bright don’t get it ,the people will be lost a good man.

    Comment by D Rosevelt — July 29, 2008 @ 7:00 pm

  27. it’s still early boys and girls, alot more to hash out in the next 90 something days: bobby’s going to have to cozy up to his party eventually and answer the hard questions, like why dems won’t at least allow states to decide whether or not to drill. and Love will have to overcome the gop image issues that they are experiencing with bush at the healm, and fight through the dccc attacks that are sure to come with the hefty investment they have made in cd2. the race will certainly help the media outlets who are struggling through advertiser cut backs though

    Comment by Anonymous — July 29, 2008 @ 7:16 pm

  28. Anyone who thinks Everett is leaving big shoes to fill has been smoking something. How many times did his own party pass over him for a plum committee assignment?

Jo Bonner has far greater standing with the GOP than does Everett.

I live in the 2nd District and haven’t seen Everett in public in years. He has been totally AWOL. Never at any functions, never at a groundbreaking, etc. He just put in a cameo appearance after the Enterprise tornado.

And if Love is the “real deal,” why has every Repub House member he serves with told me, “You don’t want this guy?” Talked to one of them today.

    Comment by LA — July 29, 2008 @ 8:35 pm

  29. Anonymous #25: What have you been smoking? Everyone knows that Congress will be controlled by Democrats. Republican committee assignments will be for PR purposes only. If the people of the 2nd CD want an effective voice, it is time to go with the flow, Democrats all the way.

    Comment by Pecan Jim — July 29, 2008 @ 9:10 pm

  30. The Dems posting on this board that think that Jay Love won’t have a chance to get on a committee think again..you obvioisly have no clue how the process works. See below:

The two main political parties in the House and Senate assign Members to committees, using a three-stage process.

Stage One - Member requests: At the beginning of a new Congress, Members request assignments to the committees they prefer. The incumbent Members (those who are not new) usually keep the committee assignments they have because they have expertise and seniority.
Stage Two - Party approval: Each political party uses a committee in charge of committee assignments to recommend assignments. This committee on committees matches the Member requests with available committee seats, prepares and approves an assignment slate for each committee, and submits all slates to the full party for approval. The full party meets to approve the recommendations.
Stage Three - Full Chamber approval: Each committee (now made up of members from each political party) submits its slate to the full Chamber for approval. When a committee member resigns or is assigned to another committee, all of Congress is notified.

  31. Re; 25

You may like to know that any sitting Congressman will almost always will throw their endorsement to their fellow party member, thats a no brainer…
No one was surprised at that endorsement. As a matter of fact, it was almost anticipated.

Although, this does not mean that person will be an auto for the position. This won’t be decided until the Nov 4 election. In this case, Love will need more than a few endorsements to defeat Bright.

Bright is well respected throughout the district, disciplined and possesses a wealth of knowledge about the present status of this country’s economic downturns. He’ll run a strong clean campaign as the voters deserve better than what they just experienced in the Repub runoff. Maybe Love will do the same, lets hope so!

Comment by Don Diego de la Vega — July 30, 2008 @ 7:14 am

  35. I just wonder if #25 kept a straight face when he typed that “Riley a didn’t get involved in the primary.”

The involvement of the Republican Party HQ (Mike Hubbard and by extension Bob Riley) in contested GOP primaries (Beth Kellum/Lucie McLemore, Twinkle/Chancey/Hornady, Mary Windom/Chris Mixon, Jay Love/Smith/Woods/Grimes/Schmidtke) has created a dangerous precedent that we may not know the full effect of for years. Stay tuned to see if this causes any dissension in GOP ranks.

  36. Blech! An accurate sentiment concerning Alabama politics … and #35 … Do elaborate.

    Comment by anonymous` — July 30, 2008 @ 9:10 am

  37. #35 I guess Bob Riley was not involved like Ronnie Gilley and other local politicians were not involved. You see it can’t be both ways, through “extensions” as you put it, I guess they are all involved.

Now focus on Bobby Bright. Is Nancy Pelosi involved or through and extension DCCC, involved in the BB campaign. YES , as are countless other LIBERALS who are pushing their agendas. Maybe they just gave $600K so Bobby Bright wouldn’t vote with them on the issues. BOBBY BRIGHT SOLD OUT! He sold his soul for this election. He won’t even be Mayor after this election is over.

    Comment by anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 9:51 am

  38. Oh, Nancy Pelosi isn’t even an extension to bobby - bobby had no shame in accepting a direct contribution from “nancy pelosi for congress”

    Comment by Anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 10:04 am

  39. #37 Ronnie Gilley is not the chaitrman of the Alabama GOP who is required to stay neutral in contested party primaries.

That was just wrong. Period. End of sentence. no excuses.

  40. please explain 39, how did the gop chairman get involved in the smith/love primary? if you’re going to remain anonymous and make allegations, please bring facts to the table, something other than “my brother’s a peanut farmer in headland and he told me so.” you provide some details and we’ll all hop on board with your assertion that the gop hq got involved.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 10:37 am

  41. There is absolutely NO comparison between Riley/Hubbard (party officials actively supporting candidates in contested primaries) and Ronnie Gilley (who as far as I know isn’t even a member of a political party). That’s just preposterous on its face.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 10:38 am

  42. Here ya go -

Look at the FCPA reports of Twinkle Cavanaugh, Mary Windom, and Beth Kellum and you will see that they did hundreds of thousands of dollars of business in their campaigns with party chair Mike Hubbard - who was actively pushed for party chair by his longtime ally Bob Riley. Hubbard also actively supported Jay Love, arranged Love’s webpage with his personal designers, arranged for Love to have the seat reserved behind Bob Riley at the televised state of the state address, actively raised money for Love, and actively took part in Love strategy sessions.

There you go. There’s more if you weant to continue with this.

We both know that Hubbard actively worked for Love. To deny that is stupid. It happened. People know. So do many GOP members and a lot of them are not amused.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 10:44 am

  43. from what i hear, 42, the gop chairman doesn’t exactly make $ (unlike a man named turnham) in his capacity. guess his business was chosen by candidates to do some of their work, maybe he was the best man for the job (maybe not, i don’t know, do you?). your jay love “proof” is silly and baseless. so yes, if there is more, i’m sure you’ll gladly share, enlighten us all with your knowledge based on facts not rumors or “everyone knows it,” b/c i’m pretty sure that you don’t know everyone.

  44. I wonder if Bright will admit he is going to vote for Obama and endorse him for President? That will say a lot.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 11:26 am

  45. Per #43-In the contested primary races cited only one candidate per race did business with the party chair - Mike Hubbard. In politics it is generally considered unethical to sell advertising/media buys to different candidates in the same contested race. And as someone who sells political advertising, it is in your interest to have your clients win.

Conclusion: Mike Hubbard had a distinct professional interest in having the candidates who bought services from him win their contested GOP primaries. As such, he had an undeniable ethical conflict of interest. He should not have sold services to any GOP candidates in conteste primaries - but he did.

As far as Jay Love, Hubbard did in fact arrange for Love to sit in the chair allotted for the minority leader - Hubbard - at the state of the state address, going to a great length of trouble to do so. Media knows this. Hubbard also assisted Love with fundraising and with campaign strategy. There are people who got phone calls from Hubbard requesting financial assistance to Love. Hubbard has participated in Love conference calls. Hubbard has contaced congressmen and others in Washington to arrange support for Love while the primary was still contested. During the primary Hubbard’s secretary has a Jay Love bumper sticker one her vehicle until someone noticed and reported on it. The firm handling Love’s website - out of Hubbard’s hometown of Auburn (which is not in Love’s district - but IS in Hubbard’s)is a firm associated with Hubbard and in fact is staffed by people who used to work for Hubbard.

There’s a lot more and it isn’t thought of as “silly” by a lot of people who are aware of the details.

Love is a mean spirited party hack who can’t bring a colaition together to win, and is now having to plead with people to even talk to him.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 3:00 pm

  56. #55 You are way off Most people have wanted Jay Love from the beginning as he is the most qualified and best candidate for the job. This is why he won the primaries. HAS supportors were duped and tricked into trusting her….for that I am sorry. I truly feel that this is not your fault.

    Comment by anonymous — July 30, 2008 @ 3:59 pm

  57. I don’t understand all the anonymous name postings? Why can’t you ppl put a name to your posts? And btw, I’m not buying into that MOST people wanted Love from the beginning? You must still be in the spin zone! Harri Anne could have easily been the nominee, instead of Love. But oh what a disasterous campaign the runoff was. Love certainly won’t live that one down anytime soon. Now lets hurry and catch the bus…

    Comment by Evaluator — July 30, 2008 @ 4:47 pm

  58. Just an aside . . .is it intelligent for Love’s people to continue to bash supporters of other GOP candidates? Of course, 4 of the 5 candidates actively supported by Mike Hubbard (GOP chair) were in runoffs, so there just MIGHT be some residual resentment of the party chair’s activity in behalf of hand-picked favorites who were doing business with Hubbard . . .just a thought here Dax - that’s a pretty big slice of the GOP you are continuing to needlessly offend as you head towards November . . .

(Now watch while the Hubbard loyalists bash the people they shafted in the contested primaries while needing their votes in the fall . . it’ll be classic . . .)

  59. 58, more than likely you are one of the people that are promoting these complete fabrications. fabrications that have sprung out of sour grapes from candidates that lost in the primary. funny how no one likes to lose and just sit back and say “ya know what? i didn’t get it done, i must have not gotten my message through and i need to rethink who i hire next time” - take a little responsibility instead of trying to find a way to be a victim. oh, and tell chris that if he continues to lose races, he may end up voluntarily moving back to florida.

  61. post 55 is very off base. be realistic. in the run off, it is very clear who was a “partisan hack”, who started negative campaigns ads first, and who ran an us vs them scorched earth campaign. That would be Smith and we all know it. Beeson was on the phone to Love July 16 extending an olive branch for what happened. Smith is too self involved to even consider it. Maybe after she loses her senate seat in 2010, they will still let her work at the bank at least.

  74. The Grand Ole Party is in the dissention mode and has been for quiet some time now. Well, does anyone wonder why? It’s simple, it’s because the country’s best interest has not been taken as a best interest by the GOP for some time. It’s been wars, fuel increases, zero health care, food increases, party division, and you name it, it has been. How on earth can the GOP mend such tall fences at this point and time? Trust me, IT JUST AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN FOLKS until after NOV 4 and then you’ll see positive changes! Just watch and see

  77. Yeah - food and gas increases are really the GOP’s fault????? As if Reid and Pelosi have not been running Congress the last couple of years and blocking any attempt to explore our own resources. Higher gas = higher food. Not to mention the programs and funds they bloat bills with. They will drive this country into total bankruptcy. Believe me, the GOP will come around very soon on the Love / Bright race. Bright’s free ride will be over and come November, he will get to keep his job as Mayor for quite some time.

    Comment by Anonymous — July 31, 2008 @ 10:09 pm

That explains all the bad-mouthing done of Chris Brown and Scott Beason on this board and in GOP circles . . .

Get real Dax. You just keep going with that circular firing squad you have arranged. And make no mistake, you guys are driving this.

In terms of the Love / Smith issue, that is over blown. We will see a Smith endorsement of Love soon.

    Comment by Anonymous — August 1, 2008 @ 9:02 am

  82. Why would you want the endorsement of someone you say is spoiled, childish, dirty, etc.?

    Comment by Anonymous — August 1, 2008 @ 9:22 am

  83. #79 ECONOMICS STUPID. Supply and demand are in play. If there is a larger supply the prices drop. When President Bush announced that he would approve off-shore drilling and consider ANWAR..did you notice oil and gas prices dropped? Yeah..that is what happens when OPEC thinks we might have a sole source provider for 10-15 years. The Republicans also have tried to pass legislation in support of alternative fuels, solar energy, fuel efficient vehicles, etc. Democrats are in the way here.
I saw a picture the other day that sums it up:

A taxpayer voting for Bobby Bright is like a chicken voting for COL Sanders.

  84. Rumor around the Wiregrass has it that several of Senator Smith’s key financal backers and several of the more influencial, Republican commitee members, in a four county area, are asking Senator Smith to hold off on making any comments on this race for awhile.

It seems that they are feeling “disenfranchised” due to Mike Hubbard’s and the National Party’s heavy involvement in the primary process.

Looks like the Republican party has some explaining to do before anything happens.

  85. 84, that is totally false. And when you see Love’s FEC reportings, you will see just that. Smith can sulk if she likes, but the financial supporters have not been holding back. Sorry Bobby.

  86. Re; 85

Money won’t be the deciding factor in this election, sorry. Take a look back at what just happened in the primary Repub race. Now you go do the calculations for yourself.
